As a serious 'series' reader, I stumbled upon Leon's Brunetti series shortly before a trip to Venice last year. I have very much enjoyed the series. I don't 'speed read' a series, instead I generally have 3 or 4 series going, rotating between series each time I read a new book. Leon's Brunetti series is so well written however, so entertaining and so engaging, that I find myself reading her books back to back. Her knowledge of Venice, the geography and of the citizens of Italy itself is obvious. I would indeed recommend reading them in the proper order as they build upon themselves, revisiting characters and plots from earlier books. Enjoy!!

Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti series is a wonderful read! Brunetti is an upper level police detective in Venice, Italy. In addition to deep and finely developed characters, the stories weave in and out of the lagoon and canals of this ancient city, into Venetian palaces and campos, restaurants, and markets, churches and cultural sites. In Acqua Alta, Commissario Brunetti must solve an assault and a murder while sloshing through the rising water of storm and high tide flooding the city. I have never been to Venice, and each new book in this series is a canal ride to discovery of the very special character of Venice and the Venetian people. I find myself daily googling pictures of the sites featured in the stories, and looking up the Italian phrases and words sprinkled through the stories like fine Italian spices; I feel like I am part of the unique culture of Venice, moreso with every page I turn. I have read nothing else since I started this series, and it’s unlikely that I will until I have read the very last page of the very last book. The writing is excellent, and the stories equal the best detective stories written. My thanks to the author for a cultural experience embedded within terrific stories!

This one just drags. The culprit and his motives turn out to be an anticlimax. I dislike the few view changes from the protagonist, which I felt disruptive to the plot flow. And i really do not wish to read about the lesbian couple relationship. The protagonist’s seeming infatuation with one of the lesbians is also offputting. At the end a disappointment after the previous books. I hesitate to continue with the series

Donna Leon's Brunetti series is addictive.I finish one and then try to move on to something else, but find myself wanting to get back into what is happening with Commisario Brunetti and his family. I had started in the middle of the series, and have now gone back and started reading from book one. So far, this book is my favorite. The setting is Venice, early winter. One of Brunietti's friends is violently attacked and injured, and he wants to discover why. Almost like another substantial character is the acqua alta (high water) a natural phenomenon that has occurred for centuries when especially high tides caused by the moon's gravitational pull coincide with a warm wind blowing across the Mediterranean that forces water from the Adriatic Sea into the Venetian lagoon. It happens perhaps every three years, and this one is particularly exceptional. Donna Leon's description is so good that you almost feel the driving rain and sloshing through water high enough to overflow boots and soak shoes, and make getting from one place to another very difficult. Part of the mystery is how rare art pieces which have been loaned to museums for temporary displays have now been stolen, replaced by very good fakes, so good that it takes an expert to determine which is real and which is the reproduction.

I'm a big fan of Donna Leon and am presently reading her entire Guido Brunetti series. This book is one of her best. Having been in Venice during the season described this book evokes exactly the atmosphere and feel of Venice during the high tides. And as usual Leon's main character is really Venice, Venitian culture and society and her insights are extraordinary. Plus the ongoing characters at the Questura and Brunetti's family as a joy to follow. Signorina Electra is a treassure.

Above average detective story greatly enhanced by colorful characters and a cold, wet venue. As much as they adore the beauty of its architecture, most residents bemoan the cold and damp. No cars, just flooding sidewalks and rain. Dirty black water coming under the doors of homes and businesses. Bartenders serving drinks while slogging around in boots because the whole cafe is flooded. But they love their museums, churches, opera divas, food, language and somehow that gets them through and makes for a very interesting read.

I am a big fan of the books by Donna Leon. The setting in Venice is interesting, the characters are well drawn, and the suspense is definitely there. Generally they are all "page turners," and I love her main character, Guido Brunetti. He and his family and co-workers are believable and sympathetic characters (with the exception of his boss). Acqua Alta is a particular favorite of mine, probably because I spent some time in Venice when the water was high and required that we walk around Piazza San Marcos on planks atop saw-horses. The scene brought back memories for me. I would recommend the book to anyone who likes good, readable mysteries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could hardly put it down. Guido Brunetti's observations when he deals with his supervisor, Patta, are funny, his kindness is sweet, and the insights into the art world are interesting. There are a couple of scenes at the beginning with his family that are unrelated to the plot but show the reader how much Commissario Brunetti loves his wife and children. The language Donna Leon uses to describe the Venice scenes, the rising waters, Brunetti's observations, and the people he observes and encounters is apt and masterful. I can't help highlighting particularly well-written passages. This is a lovely book and I'd recommend it highly. I'm reading the Brunetti books in order and I'd recommend doing so. This is book five and it is better than book 4.

The Apostles’ Creed: A Guide to the Ancient Catechism (Christian Essentials)

Review

"Like the Creed, this gem of a book answers the question, 'What do Christians believe?' But because it is sensitive to the unique doubts and fears and cynicism of the 21st century, it winsomely answers the question behind that question: 'How could Christians possibly believe that?' Myers shows as much as he tells, introducing us to the audacious wisdom of ancient voices whose insights prove timely and perennial. This is the catechesis we need for a secular age, overcoming the forgetting we parade as enlightenment."-James K. A. Smith, Calvin College"I am very thankful to Ben Myers for his concise, readable commentary on the Apostles' Creed. He joins the refreshing movement that is retrieving the church's long and well-established theological consensus and urging the contemporary church to embrace this wisdom from the past. His book helps today's church confess the Apostles' Creed as essential truth about the triune God and the salvation he offers."-Gregg R. Allison, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"Ben Myers has given readers a precious gift in this short series of meditations on the Apostles' Creed. Like the Church Fathers whose work permeates this book, he treats us to a series of pithy, pertinent reflections that demonstrate theological depth - yet with a surprisingly light touch. Tackling hard matters like gender and God's fatherhood, the virginal conception, the descent into hell, and the persons of the divine Trinity, Myers is alive to both the richness of Christian tradition and the needs of the hour. This is popular theology in the best sense of that term, making accessible the great truths of the Christian faith."-Oliver D. Crisp, Fuller Theological Seminary"Ben Myers has written a simple yet elegant and sublime account of the Christian faith according to the Apostles' Creed. Myers works through the creed, word by word, phrase by phrase, and explains its meaning in a way that is both memorable and meditative."-Michael F. Bird, Ridley College

I have been more focused on catechesis (the training and instruction about matters of Christian faith) over the past several years as I have both become more liturgical in theological bias and more focused on spiritual formation.Discipleship (which in some ways is another way of thinking of catechesis), means growing to be more like Christ. It is not about becoming a particular culture or look or personality or knowing certain things, but it is about growing to become more like Christ.Part of what I have become convinced is that we should not be training people to avoid sin, although I am not denying the reality of sin or the harm that it does, but training them toward right desires. I think porn is one of the most simple ways of illustrating this, I have heard from many that their desire to consume porn could not be managed away. Knowing porn was bad for them and simply trying to be better was not what has worked for many that I have talked to. Understanding the subject of the porn as created in the image of God and distorting the goodness of sex and their bodies for the titillation of others, usually strangers, by my anecdotal evidence, seems to be more effective. The right understanding of good things and the right desire for those good things is more important than personal desire to not do wrong. What does that have to do with the Apostles’ Creed? The Apostles’ Creed is one of the oldest distillations and positive affirmations of the Christian faith. The Creed was likely first used as a baptismal statement of faith. An affirmation of what we believe and who we believe in. The Apostles’ Creed is a positive statement. If you know some church history you can see where some of those statements are blocking false beliefs, but it is mostly about what we positively believe.Ben Myers is setting out a straight forward, exploration, sometimes word by word, of what the Apostles’ Creed means. It is not super long. The chapters are short. It would make a very good small group study or personal devotional reading. Just in the past couple years I have read books on the creed by Hans von Balthasar, Derek Vreeland and JI Packer and attempted a video series on the Apostles’ Creed with a small group.Of the books I have read on the Creed, none have been horrible, but Myers’ book on the Apostles’ Creed is the one I would recommend first. There are a couple of reasons,1) it is ecumenical. The biggest problem with von Bathasar and Packer’s books on the creed where they were assuming either Catholic or Reformed understandings of Christianity. Meyers is a Protestant and probably has a few statements that are too Protestant for Catholic or Orthodox readers, but he does not, as Packer does, complain about other streams of Christian faith’s understanding of Christianity while explicating one of the most important ecumenical statements of faith.2) Myers is intentionally being introductory. This is a book of discipleship, not scholarship. That does not mean it is simplistic or anti-academic, but that it is not primarily concerned with academic theology or small nuances of Christian faith, but about the broad stream of Christianity that can be shared among all.3) It is short. The creed is short. A book about the creed, especially one that it oriented toward teaching large swaths of Christians, should also be short. You could, although I would not recommend it, read this in a single sitting. The orientation of the book is to read it slowly, pondering it and even better discussing it. Christian faith is not primarily an individualistic faith, but a communal one. The creed is not a statement of personal individual faith, but an affirmation of a universal, communal statement of belief.

Ben Myers has written a wonderful book that illuminates and edifies, inviting deep reflection on the Apostle's Creed. This book explains basic Christian convictions, tells the story of Jesus (while pointing toward the wider redemptive arc of the Bible), and creates space for the mystery of faith, incorporating insights from scholars and theologians old and new. I strongly recommend this book as a discipleship resource for those interested in Christianity, beginners in the faith, and for experienced saints.

I eagerly anticipated reading this book after watching the sermon's series on which it's based. For each section of the Creed Ben gives a bit of historical context that helps us understand not only what the Creed is confessing but also what it was, and is against. I found this especially helpful with understanding Gnostic beliefs in the ancient and modern expressions. At the outset Ben reminds us that theology doesn't add a once to what we've already received in baptism but it helps us understand it better. As a working pastor this is a very helpful book both for teaching and preaching. It helps to be reminded of how simple, yet profound the Christian faith is.

Dr. Myers brilliantly leads the reader through the ancient creed. It's concise but substantive and incredibly helpful. This is an encouraging, engaging book, and I highly recommend it.

This is not an in-depth analysis of the Creed but a good overview. I was surprised how small it was (the dimensions are in the detail section, though) as it really is only 1/2 thick!Ben does a good job pushing one back into the Creed and the formulation of it. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to lead a Sunday School/Bible Study class in the Creed.

An interesting and enlightening analysis of The Apostles’ Creed. Short thoughts and mediations for each line. I used it as a devotional with my daily prayers. I then gave it to the priest in charge at my church.

Very readable and filled with incredible insights about the Creed. I look forward to leading a discussion in my church using this book.

A great short read packed full of valuable information to help underdtand the faith we proclaim . Strongly recommended for everyone.

Ask Me About My Uterus reads like a murder-mystery being solved by the victim -- it's that gripping and that personal. Abby Norman centers this book on her experience with illness, but is careful to buttress her narrative with science (such as it is with a condition that is not well-studied or understood).I'm always interested to read about how someone overcame hardship or impossible odds and this book delivers a heroine who essentially reads and writes her way out of the darkness. I loved this passage: "The patient who brings in a binder full of PubMed articles should be considered not so much for the specifics of what she has found, but for the fact that she has devoted so much time to the search...the very act of researching, and of supplying the fruits of that quest, is clinically relevant, if only because they are evidence of how the condition has affected the patient's life." Yes! Which made it particularly galling when, at the end of the book, a doctor dismisses the author's research by implying that the roots of her physical ailments lie in her intense love of reading and trying to solve the riddles she is facing. Excuse her for trying to save her own life, please. This book gave me hope that we are entering a new phase of medicine -- one that welcomes empowered, engaged patients who are able to connect online with the resources and peers they need to solve problems.

(I apologize in advance for my rambling review, but this book had such a tremendous impact on me and I'm struggling to find a succinct way of expressing why I think it was such a great and important read.)Abby Norman started experiencing odd symptoms of leg weakness in her teens, and then extreme pain while at college, and despite numerous trips to various medical professionals for both those things, none of the doctors she consulted had any answers for her.The worse that her pain became, the stranger the symptoms, and the longer she suffered, the more the doctors started to dismiss her. It didn't take long for the "it's all in your head" implication to be brought up, simply because Norman's symptoms didn't fit neatly into any diagnosis. And since Norman had a tumultuous childhood (emancipated from her parents at a fairly young age), was highly intelligent (managed to graduate from high school and get a full scholarship to Sarah Lawrence), not passive (very invested in finding relief for her suffering), and actually had experience in the medical field (after she left college, she worked in medical documentation in a hospital), doctors latched on to the "female hysteria" model of Days or Yore and basically tagged her with that diagnosis and kept trying to send her on her way.I could relate so much to this book because my story is the *opposite* of Norman's- I was born with Spina Bifida, and in my 43 years have experienced everything from muscle weakness to bone deterioration to depression to nerve pain to various issues with "lady business", etc and my whole body has always been this weird mish-mash of symptoms, subject to radically shift at any time, but because I had the blessing of a very firm diagnosis when I was born, I have been able to navigate everything health-related with the peace of mind that comes with knowing *why* it's happening. Most everything I have experienced can be basically stepped down from diagnosis to diagnosis back to Spina Bifida. And Spina Bifida is not a simple disease- no two patients experience it the same way and it affects multiple systems in various ways. But reading this book made me realize that a diagnosis- even a very complex one- can be a gift simply because doctors *believe* you.So, coming from my own experience, I can't imagine how devastating it must be to experience everything from extreme pain, nausea, dizziness, muscle weakness, nerve issues, etc., to NOT know what the heck is causing all of it, to live in a constant state of fear that your body is basically failing and might not be able to be healed, and then to have the doctors say "you're not actually experiencing any of it- you're too high strung. Try and relax and it'll get better" ... I have friends who have struggled with various "mystery diseases" so I was aware that the medical establishment can really not serve everyone, but this book made me realize that it's a lot more widespread than I realize. The idea that people are going through this experience on a regular basis is just heart breaking and also so very frustrating. I never realized before reading this book what a gift a firm diagnosis can be- all I have to do is walk into most any medical establishment and say "Spina Bifida" and I am taken seriously and whatever I am experiencing is given consideration. I can't imagine experiencing what I have experienced and trying to get help and having someone say "that numbness in your foot? It's all due to emotional stress. If you chill out, it should go away. Good luck with that."Another reason I related to this book is because Norman really shares what it's like to live long-term with a chronic health problem- you have to basically tailor your entire life, every detail of it, to preventative care. Other people don't understand why it's so important to do it, but to maintain any semblance of sanity or general "okayness"- today and in the future-, you basically have to serve your own health before anything else. It was such a relief to finally read someone else's experience with this. Anyone with a rather complex set of health problems knows that we can't just jump out of bed, put on our shoes, and walk out into the sunshine And we get a lot of flack for it from people who don't really get what it's like- we get flack for not being able to make a lot of plans, for not being able to travel a lot, for choosing to stay home and take care of ourselves rather than just throwing up our arms and going out and embracing life. If we don't take care of ourselves, we don't *get* life. It's not that we choose to be this way- the fact is we don't *have* a choice. If we blow off our routines, if we take even a day off from all the preventative things we do, sometimes the cost can be weeks in the hospital or permanent damage. So having Norman say "this is how I live, and how I make my life work, and that's that" was very refreshing for me. It made me realize that a lot more of us are doing this than I thought. So this book was eye-opening, enraging, heart-breaking, empowering, and ... well, it was astonishing to me. I highly recommend it to everyone whether you have health problems or not. This isn't about health or medicine, it's about what it's like to be human in a less-than-perfect body. And whether or not a person experiences a health problem early in life health issues of some sort are almost inevitable down the line, given the way in which the human body ages and begins to break down. Very few people escape their life unscathed in some way and I think a lot of us, even with complex medical problems, take for granted that if we fall ill, at the very least a doctor will be able to find the source of that problem and offer a treatment. But now I realize that's not always the case.I'm sorry for this terribly rambling review, but this book really impacted me.

“Hi, I’m Abby Norman. I am not a doctor — but I might have been.” That is not how Abby begins her book — that introduction does not show up until Chapter 7, when she uses it for a presentation she is making to an endometriosis conference — but it should begin any discussion of Abby Norman’s book, because you need to understand that Abby has a brilliant mind that should have been in use for the medical benefit of humanity. Instead she has spent her entire adult life — and she is not yet thirty — fighting the medical establishment to prove that she is not a hypochondriac, nor a hysteric, nor a fanciful delusional woman who likes to read medical descriptions online. She is a young woman who is very sick, and would like doctors to fix her. Or if they can’t fix her, correctly diagnose her condition. Or if they cannot diagnose her, at least shut up and listen to what she has to say about her own symptoms, and what she’s learned about the disease that’s killing her.Ask Me About My Uterus (AMAMU) is not precisely a page-turner, but it drew me in and got me hooked. I bought Abby’s book in hardcover, so to save weight I did not bring it on a trip. At the airport, I bought the electronic version for iBooks, because I didn’t want to wait three days to finish it.This will not be a comfortable read for many men, and some women. Abby’s descriptions of her conditions and treatments are graphic (albeit smoothed with self-deprecating humor) and concern the “icky parts” of a woman’s system. [Suggestion for men who get uncomfortable hearing about “women’s problem” — get over yourselves. Half the people on the planet are female, so learn what most of them go through on a monthly basis. If you’re heterosexual, your partner could use some support. If you’re gay, your mother or female friends need occasional empathy. If you’re an orphaned monk in a remote monastery, get off the Internet before I tattle to your abbot.]Many people, when they get close to the end of their life, feel a need to leave a legacy, or a remembrance, or some token that they made a difference in this world. Abby Norman is a woman in her 20s who is learning as much about the disease of endometriosis as she can so that she can leave behind something that others can build on; so that she can help advance knowledge about a “woman’s disease” that has been noted but mostly ignored for centuries simply because it is a “woman’s disease” (although, it turns out, it actually isn’t; it’s just more rare and manifests differently in males—see Chapter 6).AMAMU follows different tracks and timelines, switching between the personal and the clinical. The Prologue is almost a teaser, as Abby tells us about a very bad day when she was in college, with physical symptoms she had never experienced before and didn’t understand. From there she takes us through the history of medicine (spoiler: a lot of things we think we know about the human body were not actually researched as well as we’ve been lead to believe); through her personal history (God, if You’re reading this, a child who has been through what Abby lived through when she was growing up should not have had to endure what she encountered as an adult — just a comment from a customer); into her determination that she has endometriosis, and her struggle with the medical establishment to get them to take action.Abby is dying. Of course, everyone is dying, but Abby is going a little bit faster some days than most of us are. Is her book self-pitying? No, although she mentions days she feels sorry for herself. Is her book sad? How could a book about a brilliant young woman who is condemned to soul-crushing pain and loss of career and collection agencies hounding her for hospital bills she will never, ever be able to pay… how could a book like that NOT be sad? And yet it isn’t. I hesitate to use the word “inspiring,” because it’s gotten trite, but “informative” would be an understatement. Ask Me About My Uterus has made me glad that people like Abby Norman are in the world.
