About the Author

 As one of the country’s first environmental TV reporters, LOREN NANCARROW has seen interest and knowledge in humans’ role in the natural environment grow significantly in the past three decades, and he’s been awarded some of broadcast journalism’s highest honors for reporting on environmental science and nature around the planet. When not covering the news, Loren has worked at improving the environment as a founding trustee of the EcoLife Foundation. The EcoLife Foundation has projects in the United States, Mexico, and Africa aimed at reducing carbon output, reforesting important habitat, and saving vulnerable species, like monarch butterflies in Mexico and mountain gorillas in Uganda. Loren makes his home in coastal Southern California. He and his wife, Susie, have three grown children. He is a passionate organic vegetable gardener.   A native Californian, JANET HOGAN TAYLOR graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology with emphasis in entomology. Janet took a job with the San Diego Zoo, where she became a senior keeper in the bird department. Introduction   Take a stroll through most home-and-garden stores these days and it’s easy to believe we’ve cured our addiction to chemicals. Terms like “organic,” “earth friendly,” “all natural,” “locally grown,” and so on are prominently displayed on product packaging. But our enlightenment may be more about slogans and marketing than a new understanding of the natural world and the importance of protecting it.   I realized how little we’ve moved toward chemical-free gardening while using social media. In addition to posting vacation pictures and keeping in touch with friends from back home, I use Facebook to share occasional gardening videos and images from my organic growing projects. Recently, I posted pictures of tomato hornworms, their sphinx moth mothers, and the cocoons containing the next generation of the hungry pests. My thinking was to connect the dots for gardeners who are suddenly finding the gigantic caterpillars in their gardens. Many people posted the inevitable: “Eewwww,” “Yuck,” and “Ohhh gross!” Quite a few people were surprised and appreciative that they now understood the pest’s life stages.   Aha! I had them, and I wanted to relate it to the best and least-toxic way to kill the garden bad guys. So I posted a picture of a hornworm covered with eggs from the tiny beneficial braconid wasp and added a short blurb explaining what the picture showed. I also suggested they be left in the garden when found with the eggs on their backs.   Now, after sharing my views for more than thirty years on TV in California, I assume the people who “friend” me on Facebook know I advocate less toxic methods of feeding our plants and managing pests. So I was shocked at the responses to my latest caterpillar and parasite picture. Those who commented advocated everything up to and including nuclear attack to kill the hornworm and especially the one with the growths all over its back. I reasoned with them: “No, wait—if left alone the eggs will hatch, and the baby wasps will eat the caterpillar and go on to search and destroy any other caterpillars in the garden!” They didn’t care. All they wanted was the thing gone; methods be damned. The last things they wanted were worms and wasps! Oh well, I tried. But I knew there had to be a better way—and that is precisely what my friend Janet Taylor and I hope to provide in the pages ahead.    Thank you for picking up Dead Snails Leave No Trails. Between these covers, Janet and I have compiled some unique ideas we’ve discovered to eliminate out-of-control pests. We also share some old-fashioned but logical methods of nonchemical gardening and pest control. Our goal is to consider how nature seeks balance. Infestations most often happen when that balance is upset, allowing single species to grow out of control. That’s exactly what we face when chemical pesticides are used. They are indiscriminate killers. Chemical insect sprays do not understand the difference between an insect that will eat your prized veggies and the ones that make their living by eating the same insect pests you want gone. When exterminating sprays enter the equation, everything is killed, and it’s the pests that return first and in greater numbers, followed much more slowly by the beneficial critters.   In an organically grown garden, balance is the general rule. Pests still exist, but so do the natural means of dealing with them. Unfortunately, in our efforts to harvest maximum amounts of food, we’ve come to view all insects as enemies. We have created chemical poisons to kill and chemical fertilizers to encourage growth. They each appear to achieve their objective, and in the case of chemical pesticides, they do their job too well. But again, most are indiscriminate and kill everything with which they come into contact. Too many of the victims are beneficial insects and animals, which perform the essential work of pollinating, breaking down organic matter, and killing pests. Our goal is to replicate nature when possible or to use the least toxic means of achieving our goal of a happy, healthy, natural home and garden.   My coauthor Janet is an entomologist by profession. Her knowledge of the insect world still astounds me, twenty years after we first met. She is the brains in this operation and knows more about the creepy crawlers in our homes and gardens than any ordinary person could ever hope to know. On the other hand, I turned my gardening hobby into part of my profession as a way to maintain sanity. As a southern California TV weatherman, I was going crazy. All those jokes are true. The weather is wonderful, but most days are between 65°F and 70°F, with night and morning low clouds and afternoon sunshine. The rest of the time there are either raging east winds that spark destructive wildfires or brief heavy downpours that cause hillsides to give way in the famous western mudslides.   Most of the year I was bored silly, repeating the same numbers and conditions day in and day out. When I began adding short segments on the native animals in my yard, or the ants that I found had invaded my kitchen counter, I was happily shocked by the response. People related. Some had wondered about the same creature in their yard or had awakened to the same ant invasion. When I met Janet, she said she’d noticed the TV segments and thought we should team up. Together, we’ve learned so much about the things that bug us, and together we’ve come up with some highly effective ways to foil pests and encourage the good guys. This is a really good book for several reasons. It's one of the few that take you all the way from starting with no idea what technical analysis is (or even trading for that matter), all the way up to locked, cocked, loaded and ready to trade. I think after you trade for a while you forget just how daunting those first few steps can be for many people.I've always been more of a technical trader (as opposed to trading fundamentals), it's a way of thinking I was first exposed to as a teenager, and using this perspective I was able to trade futures with a fair degree of success. Since then I've also traded stocks and Forex this way, and I've found that many of these techniques hold-up in, well, any market really.This book covers a lot of ground, from understanding markets and their trends, older techniques such as moving averages, candlesticks, trend patterns, etc... and also using more advanced analysis techniques available with most modern trading software. It's a lot, but it's written in a highly accessible, no-nonsense language that reflects the considerable amount of experience of the author. I found it to be a nice refresher.I don't think this book is really aimed at seasoned traders; it's quite broad, I think seasoned traders wouldn't get a whole lot from it, although I could be wrong about that, I guess I'm just speaking for myself. I will say that if you are just getting started however this book is pure gold, it basically hands you everything to enter the market and not lose your butt!Highly recommended.

This is an exceptionally well-written, comprehensive course on technical analysis. I've read several books on this subject and I've always struggled with certain key concepts that are often mired in ill-explained mathematical minutia. Although, I'm an experienced trader, I learned a great deal from this book. It is a wonderful resource for a beginner, and has a good deal to offer even more sophisticated investors. If you want to understand technical analysis, this book is a great place to start.

It is amazing the depth of knowledge contained in the this book and the simplicity of the explanations that accompany complex topics. The book covers all the basics explaining how all markets function from forex, options, and the stock market to futures contracts. The book gives readers a basic explanation of what technical analysis is and how it applies to reading price action. The author explains all the basics of charting and the concept of trend identification on a chart. The book explains chart patterns and how they can be identified by using the history of price action to see them and the potential for future movements. I like the section on moving averages as he explains what they are and how to use multiple moving averages to trade with. The author takes the time to explain money management and the step by step process for building a trading system. I am very impressed with the authors depth and comprehensive coverage of all things that can lead to a traders success. Bravo! I highly recommend this book as a great place to start for the aspiring new trader to get a complete understanding of important market concepts that will lead to their success.

I love these quirky characters an Awesome flowing story. When I first stumbled across these books I was thinking, hmm talking cat; can't be that bad then. Then I truly fell in love. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

First: Happy International Women's Day! Second: If you are looking for a great series to read in commemoration of this day, then you should the Liv Beaufont series! It has everything you are looking for in a easy, quick lighthearted read with a powerful and hilarious woman at the forefront. Liv Beaufont is courageous, street-smart, and funny. She doesn't take crap from anyone, and because of that, she often finds herself in the most bizarre situations, especially now that magic is involved.This book is my favorite so far out of the 3, and fortunately, because Sarah Noffke is writing like crazy you don't have to wait long for the next book in the series. Here are my pros and cons:Pros:1) The characters are great. Liv is personable and hilarious, along with her sarcastic lynx and witty banter between friends.2) The world-building is cool. I love the idea of the fae running Las Vegas - makes perfect sense to me. The Councilor-Warrior dynamic is interesting, but I am also a little confused: Liv's parents were the Beaufont Councilor and Warrior, but then it went to the eldest brother and sister. It seemed like the other families are also made up of brothers and sisters, so that made me wonder...Are Liv's parents siblings or what, were they from separate families? Was it a married into the role sort of thing, like a monarchy?3) The mystery is slowing gaining force, but the Beaufont family seems to have moved on pretty quickly from the sadness of their older brother and sister and parents dying in a relatively short time-span. And honestly, in their line of work, it is SUPER suspicious 4 people have died in that family - why aren't the other families questioning or thinking about it?4) The action is great, the plot moves quickly and each time a book ends you are satisfied, yet also want more.Cons:1) The prologue of each story has the bad guy doing something nefarious, but it isn't really tied in well to the rest of the story. Whatever the bad guy is doing, you don't see it play out yet. For example, brewing an evil potion, but in the book we never see who the potion is meant for. The mystery might be addressed in the later books, but at least a portion of the mystery should be solved at some point, not just more clues or hints at evil work at play.2) Description of characters. I'm having a hard time picturing Rory and some of the other characters because they haven't been physically described. Fortunately, it hasn't taken away from the story because their actions and words are very much well-described. Right now, I'm sort of picturing Rory as a larger, more rugged, Jason Momoa with kittens and a frilly apron.3) I'm a romantic at heart, so eventually I would like Liv to stop pushing everyone away and fall for someone like Rory or Stefan. Or at least bring in some love to the story besides friendship and family. Personally, I loved the banter between her and Rudolf, though they would never work well together.Anyway, I'm loving these books and I hope more keep coming!

This 3rd book in the series just keeps getting better and better! Liv takes on assignments dealing with the Queen of the Fae, Demons, and the tenacious evil elf from the History Museum caper. Liv must now take Akio up on his offer to help her with combat training. Liv describes Akio as “fluid like water and unrivaled in his ability. “ That same statement brilliantly describes the flow of action, interactions, and quick witty repartee throughout this series. Kudos to Sarah and Michael for an enchanting, delightful Warrior, the Unstoppable Liv! Be good to yourself, settle into a comfy spot and read this AWESOME series! You deserve it!

Every book Sarah writes seems better than the last. How she keeps up this momentum is mind numbing. So far this is my favorite of the 3. The humor is never ending, with Liv's quick wit and fascinating side characters. The dialogue is cheeky and always has a funny note or a point. No long internal dialogue that gets old fast and no ridiculous scenarios that make you roll your eyes. Liv is a great heroine and I wish I could weild magic just to be able to eat 4000 calories a day as Liv must so I don't get to thin. I simply can not wait for book 4 and hopefully even more there after.

Another fun story featuring Liv Beaufont. I enjoyed many of the characters we previously met, especially John, Rory, Rudolph and Sophia. In The Definat Magician Rudolph plays a larger role in helping Liv with one of her cases and we learn more about Warrior Stephan. I feel like we are closer to learning what happened to Liv's parents, and I love how we slowly learn more about them as we learn about their interactions with the magical world. Liv shows the Council what she is capable of. I'm looking forward to seeing what she has for us in book 4.

Even before the first book was released in it, I was eager for this series, since in my opinion Sarah is an incredible writer. I am thrilled to say that, so far, it has exceeded my already high expectations. The third book in the series, this book was just fun. The over arching plot was advanced, and Lib kicked ass! I loved how she basically conned the Queen of the fae into decreeing exactly what the Council wanted, before she was ever asked.I wait anxiously for book 4.

Good Book

I bought this book believing there were techniques that I didn't know about. I'm a seasoned beginner and was looking forward to improving my flying. The truth is I had already been practicing most of the authors recommendations. Obviously, the federal and local laws pertained to Australia while the references to certifications and this and that didn't apply in the U.S. I read this material in less than an hour.

He never said a thing about hexicopters and thay are not drone they are model aircraft.

Despite being new to the Drone/Quadcopter hobby this book did very little for me. It was very short.

First time reading this series. Enjoy the suspense and the writing style of this author. The book is concise and a very much needed reference for this growing field. I recommend this book to anyone that has a serious interest in drones.

Amazing addition to my LaChapelle collection of works. Although, published by Taschen - some prints are repeated from LaChapelle's original books, there are few unique prints I don't recall seeing elsewhere. Slightly smaller size than usual-large coffee table size books, but much more generous on amount of prints. Highly recommended to photographers, lighting, fasion and interior designers, makeup artists etc. I wish every photo came with a hefty description, as I know each photo is an epic tale of behind-the-scenes and true meaning. Still, a wonderful book, for any guest to spark a conversation with (even your mother in law).

Not my favorite David LaChapelle book but there are some real cool shoots in this one including some of your favorite celebrities.

A gift for my husband, who loves LaChappelle's work. It was his favorite Christmas present! I can best describe this as a baroque collection of photography. Provocative, shocking, eccentric, colorful....I could go on. If you can appreciate excellent photography from an exceptionally creative mind who is not afraid of shock-value, I highly recommend this. My ONLY wish is that each photo included a brief description of LaChappelle's inspirations for each work of art (it does include each celebrity's name, title and date...but we want to know more!). If you have an open mind for art and photography, buy the book...you won't be disappointed!

Great book, lot of photos, I saw his exhibit in Prague and he is very cool artist. Maybe not a perfect book for work coffee table as it is NSFW but great for your home :)

Gave this as a gift to a friend who is also a phenomenal photographer. LaChapelle is one of her favorites and this took her by complete surprise and she loved it. I wasn't personally familiar with the artist myself, but after looking through the book with her, I almost wanted to keep it for myself. Very bold, bright pictures. Very unique in style. Love it.

I was excited on this book but I think he has better books than this one. But is ok

I can't understand why there is such a big deal about this guy's work other than he had an idea and shot it first, then made sure MANY people saw it right away. So it was VERY encouraging to see that the ONLY thing that made this name a household name in photography was EXPOSING his work to others. MANY others. Don't get me wrong, there are very creative ideas in this book as far as a photographic concept point of view. But if you are expecting some great artistic-technical expert works, you won't find it here. Generic photoshop effects, a lot of which are not very good by today's standards of even the "Amateur". Many shots look as though they were just shot with a film point-and-shoot camera. And very well may have been. This book should call to notice the possibility that ANY photographer can become a celebrity legend, if he/she just gets ther quirky pictures in front of millions of viewers. Go Get Em SoccerMoms! :-) Get this book, look at the pictures, get motivated, shoot, show, succeed.

David's work is so amazing, this is one of my favorite books of his. Many famous faces and great concepts

Luckily I was able to find it here on Amazon.There is a fabulous Chicken & Articoke recipe which is so easy, yet it is the perfect dish to serve to your boss and their spouse!I can't wait to cook several of the other recipes which appear very easy and delicious.There are even some recipes for gift giving which I plan to use this Christmas for my Ladies Social Group.

The present (2012) Jewish Lights edition of "Your Word is Fire: The Hasidic Masters on Contemplative Prayer," is about twenty pages longer than earlier forms, due to an expanded Introduction. It was originally published in "The Spiritual Masters" series from the Paulist Press in 1977; that edition would be the subject of the earlier-dated reviews on this product page.My copy of the Paulist Press edition is an undated mass-market size paperback, with a lovely cover incorporating a nineteenth-century Central European Mizrach ("East"), used to mark the direction of prayer (facing Jerusalem), with designs made up of tiny Hebrew texts -- much of it, alas, too small to read in the reproduction, even when magnified.... (The use of a Mizrach was a traditional European Jewish practice, not associated specifically with the Hasidic / Chasidic Movement.)The short book (under 120 pages of texts) provides an interesting approach to a mystical, "charismatic," and popular strain in Jewish life, whose adherents are known, in a bold self-characterization, as the "Pious Ones." (They labelled their more traditionally-minded, and rigorously scholastic, critics as "Misnagdim," "Oppositionists," as though their opponents were the ones tampering with accepted theory and practice.)This is not the only movement in Jewish history known as "Hasidim," but it is the one usually meant when the term is used without further explanation. (Two other major groups are the "Chasideans," contemporaries of the Maccabees, and the "Hasidei Ashkenaz," or "European Pietists," an elite movement in the twelfth-century Rhineland and Central Europe.)The Hasidic Movement emerged in the eighteenth century in Eastern Europe, and within a couple of generations had developed different branches, with distinctive ideas and practices, looking back to several influential teachers. According to the editors, their collection of statements regarding prayers and prayer practice consciously excluded several such inner-Hasidic divisions, specifically the Lubavitch (ChaBaD) and Bratslav movements. As a result, the selection is representative primarily of the earliest generations of Hasidism, namely the founder, known as the Ba'al Shem Tov ("Master of the Good Name"), the Maggid (preacher) Dov Baer of Miedzyrzec, "and their immediate disciples" through the later eighteenth century. (Yes, the literature is littered with variously-spelled Eastern European place-names, some of which have changed several times as borders were redrawn.)This self-imposed limitation on source documents makes good literary sense, albeit at the sacrifice of a fuller representation of the range of Hasidic thought. It also happens to correspond more closely to the somewhat romantic notion of Hasidic spirituality promulgated by, among others, Martin Buber, as against the more rigorous analyses of Hasidic thought and practice offered by Gershom Scholem (the leading historian of Jewish Mysticism in the Twentieth Century) and his followers. An implied endorsement of Buber's somewhat narrow view of "authentic" Hasidism should not be attributed to Green and Holtz, however. In fact, two of the three citations of secondary literature in their endnotes to the readings are to a (relatively) non-technical article by Scholem himself. ("Devekut, or Communion with God," in the volume "The Messianic Idea in Judaism, and Other Essays on Jewish Spriituality" (1971), where it is followed by Scholem's view of "Martin Buber's Interpretation of Hasidism."One of my (several) minor objections to the volume is the use of endnotes for the sources; I would have preferred them at ends of the quoted passages, instead of having to flip back and forth. Particularly because the notes are keyed only by page numbers -- the readings have no separate titles. Most of the notes are simply bibliographic (identifying the source of a passage), but a good percentage are explanatory, or acknowledge editorial re-arrangements of the text. The latter practice is understandable; in all too many cases, the writings were originally oral presentations mainly in Yiddish (the German-based vernacular of Eastern European Jews), taken down by followers, and published in Hebrew translation. The combination of sometimes repetitive oral style, and confused or conflated transmission, from time to time produces a muddle from which the original message must be extricated.

For Green, this concerns God's radical immanence in the world.The passages in this book are a compendium of such expressions of God, and are meant to facilitate such a view.

This is a wonderful, wonderful reader in Hasidic perspectives on prayer. The book blossoms with deep insights into the spiritual dynamic between God and humans. Please consider the following:"A father has a young child whom he greatly loves. Even though the child has hardly learned to speak, his father takes pleasure in listening to his words." (p. 102)There is something both bold and humbling about and such a perspective on prayer. God is not only King, but Father as well. The Infinite One is both large and small, far and near.Many of the different dynamics of prayer are explored in this work, each in its own section, and everything is referenced at the end of the book. The book opens with an academic essay that provides a good context for the Hasidic exploration of the vast sea of prayer, the experience of union with the Divine Presence (p. 80). As with most readers, any background knowledge of Hasidism is helpful, but at the same time not necessary to have in order to be touched by the wisdom of these mystics.I think, though, that this book needs to be approached as an open door to the myster of prayer. Rather than just being read, it should be tested: to approach God as a child who is unable to speak is a humbling thing. To persist, nonetheless, and draw close to God as God draws us and pulls us close is to experience God's love. The reader of this book will have some far reaching light as s/he travels and progresses down the path of such prayer.
