Karen Hancock gave us a believable and sympathetic character in Abramm, the monk-turned-warrior, warrior-turned-king, and she spun two well-crafted stories in the first two books of the series. But with this one...well, something happened. For one thing, a book can be a thousand pages long, if that's how long it takes to tell the story, but only one major story should be told. If there are two stories running parallel, or multiple subplots, that's fine, but everything should add up to one big story, not a story that ends and then begins afresh on the next page only to end again in a cliffhanger, and that's what happens here. The story here should be the one in which Abramm gets his bride and chases off the pesky invaders. And that's exactly what happens. Unfortunately, the story doesn't stop there. It could have...and it looks as if Hancock wondered if she should stop or go on. She could have stopped with the wedding, the happy ending, and then the grim foreboding of something terrible to happen in the future--a prophecy which could have been carried out in the next book. BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENS. Instead, you turn the page and are greeted by Part 4, set some five years later, in which WHAM, the entire kingdom falls apart. The bratty brother Gillard, now a full-time servant of evil (think of him as selling his soul to the devil so he can become king) ousts Abramm from power and plunges the country of Kiriath into darkness. Almost too fast to follow, we are treated to Abramm's torture by Mataian monks, his wife and children's capture by Gillard, Abramm's rescue by his devoted Uncle Simon, and Madeleine's defeated return home. It's as if Hancock decided, no, it isn't enough to promise forthcoming tragedy--I've got to end the book with it, so people will come back and read the next book. And it doesn't work. The ending feels rushed (with action of the kind I've just described, it should be rushed--but not too tightly for the story's sake) and forced.Part Four should actually be where Book 4, "Return of the Guardian King," begins, but I guess Hancock thought Abramm had to leave before he could return. He didn't. Book Four actually contains enough material for two books, but what appears to have happened is that Hancock got tired and decided to rush through the end as fast as possible. So book 3 ends on a cliffhanger--and this damages book 4 even more.
As with the first two books in the series, Karen Hancock doesn't disappoint in Shadow Over Kiriath. I was impressed all over again by how each book progressed to a different frame of Abramm's life. Everything that happened to him, he was forced to look within, decipher Truth from shadow, and trust Eidon (God) no matter what. Her skill in building Abramm's world surpassed even that of the first two books.I lobe that throughout she gave glimpses of the very real war going on around us in the spirit realm. It is a war that affects us everyday; our thoughts, decisions, actions...Again, I was very happy to see that she remained true to Biblical Truth, showed the evil for what it was, and that evil creatures were exactly that...evil. She didn't use them to represent God, as so many other writers are trying to do. That was a huge selling point for me with these books.I HIGHLY recommend this series to everyone.
The king of Kiriath, Abramm Kalladorne, knows that though he has defeated several foes, the invincible Black Moon army of Esurhmarches towards his country crushing the feeble opposition along the way. Esurh plans to control all land that touches the Sea of Sharss including Kiriath. To Esurh, Abramm will always remain the "White Pretender" slave who fought in their arenas at one time. Abramm also has internal dissension fostered by the still popular Mataio religious order, whose insurgency failed, but remain openly defiant and objects to his rule.Abramm accepts a marriage of alliance with the ruling family of nearby Chesedh; he will wed Princess Briellen, but Abramm is more attracted to her younger sister Lady Madeleine, who feels the same way as he does. If they go down that path they will fail their respective nations at a time when their enemies near. The third epic tale in the award winning Legends of the Guardian-King saga, SHADOW OVER KIRIATH, is a fantastic allegorical fantasy that contains several major subplots that tie back to the main superb story line. Though he has defeated his internal opponents such as his brother (who sold him into slavery) and the Mataio order, both and others remain a threat to his reign and to his country. Those machinations pale alongside of the coming invaders as even the monarch has doubts that Eidon will save his people from slavery. He also ponders how to marry the woman who stirs his blood without alienating Chesedh or Eidon. Karen Hancock provides a powerful stand alone epic tale that is excellent as a stand alone, but is incredible when read back to back to back with its predecessors (see LIGHT OF EIDON and THE SHADOW WITHIN).Harriet Klausner
Shadow Over Kiriath by Karen HancockShadow Over Kiriath (Legends of the Guardian-King, Book 3)Another excellent book from Ms. Hancock. Her telling of each characters journey to Eidon is well told and suspenseful. She does it so well that with each scene you go into it wondering if this will be the time when the character forsakes it all and gives into evil. It is not a foregone conclusion that they will chose the right path and the reader sits there and prays that the character will.Ms. Hancock has skillfully crafted the scenes so that the reader knows exactly what the character is feeling and they want to turn the page to see how they stack up to the character. An excellent read with lots of lessons for the reader.Be sure and have book four close by when finishing book three because you will want to start reading it right away.God Bless,Chris Weigand[...].
