OK... you've probably read all the flashy reviews on this one. So I won't bother showering it with overwhelming praise. Let's get down to the dirt:This title started off strong. The intro [Prologue] takes place in the future, where an orbital drop, ODST style, takes place. A bunch of outnumbered Spartan-III warriors strike a covenant refinery-type structure, in what I'd tag as a fantastic battle. Some kid named Tom leads the pack. Great scenes...but you'd expect the rest of the book--which starts in chapter 1 with a flash back into the past, showing the commissioning /experiences of the Spartan-III program--to be just as strong.Sadly, the story does not deliver as you'd expect. In my opinion, this intro was the best part of the whole story.Tom's training days, along with his relationships to a few other kid Spartans is shown as you read on. Good, but nothing in depth there. You can tell he's destined to be an "Alpha-Male" character. As you read on, a lot of attention is given to a female scientist that worked on the original Spartan program [called Dr. Halsey], and to another guy, named Kurt, a veteran Spartan. But you never get to KNOW them or their true characters, in the 377 pages. It feels like they're standing around, reading a teleprompter or something; and some of the actions/decisions they take are not really "sound".Cool real time combat strategies, battling with less than sufficient weaponry in comparison to the foes, and lots of self-sacrifice takes place, upon a seemingly uninhabited planet named Onyx. I particularly liked the research data presented on that world and its rich subterranean minerals, which is why bad guys want it. Plus there appears to be buried alien technology there, almost fusing what I'd call Aztec-style constructs and nanotechnology into one lethal sentient entity.Yes there was a space battle, with Covenant warships vs. UNSC battle cruisers. And that was ok; it almost seemed disconnected from the rest of the ongoing Spartan-III development.Like others have pointed out, this sort of "random battle thingy" leads to too many plots in one single story line. Feels like you're being dragged off the main course over and over again. But still, if you want strong character development, high intrigue, and "a balanced tale that does not feel like it is being Forced into the dictated mental constraints of the XBOX HALO property owners", you will not find it in this book. Its almost like... playing a video game, and the cut-scenes force you to do stuff that seems foolish to your independent mind, but you drag along, and vanquish the obstacles ahead of you... and get to the end, and find out... oh-my-damn, there is no end...If this where a movie and I saw it, I'd want my money back.Don't get me wrong, the author, Eric Nylund, is a pro. He has written other outstanding Halo/Non-Halo stuff. But I'm certain he did not have creative freedom to give you and epic sci-fi adventure worth remembering in this one.

It is a sad truth this book is not available to Australian kindle users, Eric you write great books - why shut them away from the world???.

I am a geek for Sci-Fi and Halo is one of my favorite series of stories. I have purchase the paperback version, the Kindle Version and the Audible version of this book and I have read it and listened to it multiple times. Eric Nylund is my favorite author in the series of Halo books. I like the storylines that he writes and the action is something I really enjoy. Military Sci-Fi is my favorite genre.Eric's books are creative and I like the strategies that he writes into the space battles and the ground battles. This is one of the best Halo books and I found it to be entertaining. You get action that involves Spartan II warriors, Spartan III’s, Dr Halsey and CPO Mendez. The book focuses on the continued development of the Spartan III program and the second generation of the Spartan III’s creation and training.Meanwhile the Covenant is still winning the war but several factions are developing that are causing trouble within the Covenant alliance. Onyx is found to have a secret Forerunner base while it is also the secret training ground for the Spartan III’s. Fighting breaks out between the Spartan III’s and Forerunner Sentinels guarding the ancient alien base. A full war breaks out between the UNSC and the Covenant force over the space above Onyx. They are all trying to survive or capture and use secret advanced Forerunner alien technology to help their side win the war….This is a great story with a lot of action. I liked it a lot. I don't play the Halo game but I have read all of the books in the Halo series. This is a good book and if you are a Halo fan it is a must read.I like the Halo books and this is one of my favorites. This is an excellent story and it is a good book to have in your Halo Sci-Fi library.

Not the best of the Halo novels I've read so far but still great. It is a worthy addition to the lore. It give you an explanation to I'm formation missing the Halo reach (game). It is a must read for a Halo fan. It can be a bit slow going at times and you must read the previous novels to get a full understanding but if you have you'll be glad you read it. The mass market paperback is obviously cheaply made but it still holds very well. If you aren't a person who looks for nice looking books, get the mass market version. It's the same book just smaller.

I'm one of the odd sorts who follows the Halo story without actually playing the games myself. Eric Nylund's books, along with the games and some of the film content, are a key part of this universe, its background and what ties it all together. As much as I enjoyed The Fall of Reach and First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx is probably on another level of storytelling. It's an extremely well-laid-out tale, incorporating some flashbacks, flashforwards and vignettes as usual, all in the service of tracking the main storyline with depth and impact. Think of a wonderfully-edited film; that's what this book is like. If you are coming from the games and the early books, this one is a great next-step in broadening out the world of the Spartans, and Halo as a whole. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in this franchise.

The Timber Press Guide to Succulent Plants of the World: A Comprehensive Reference to More than 2000 Species, by Fred Dortort

From Booklist

Cactus and succulent expert Dortort, a lecturer at the University of California Botanical Garden, has assembled an attractive and user-friendly guide to succulent plants. The book begins with overview chapters on succulents in nature and in cultivation. Subsequent chapters, organized by family and genus, contain an overview of the families and then move into essays on individual species. More than 2,000 succulents are featured, with descriptions, climate information, trivia, and a note on similar plants, if any. There are 750 full-color photographs of plants, most in their natural habitats. Each entry includes information on the plant’s native habitat and its cultivation requirements. Both familiar species and more exotic varieties are showcased. In the final chapter, Dortort covers “odds and ends”—plants not normally known as succulents, such as begonias and philodendrons. A genera-specific reading list is offered, for those seeking further information. Novice plant enthusiasts and those who are already well familiar with succulents will appreciate this comprehensive and accessible volume. Recommended for all public and academic libraries, particularly those with strong gardening or plant collections. --Rebecca Vnuk

#80,649 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a handsomely produced volume which, alas, will be of limited practical usefulness for the home gardener, or even for the reasonably informed succulent enthusiast. The jacket states that it contains "detailed descriptions of more than 2000 plants" and "more than 750 photographs", which is one of the main problems: more than half of the species mentioned are not illustrated, and since those mentions are usually unaccompanied by more detailed information they're not very helpful in identifying particular species. And while it's interesting to see many of these plants photographed in their natural habitat, the small size and often cluttered nature of the photographs makes identifying particular species difficult - to say nothing of the fact that many of the species photographed in situ are ones that the average succulent enthusiast are unlikely to encounter at a nursery or botanic garden. What practical information there is is overwhelmingly directed at the Californian gardener (which comes as no surprise since the author is based in the Bay Area) and will be of very limited usefulness for those living elsewhere.Overall, the book feels too specific in some areas (taxonomies, geographic descriptions) and not specific enough in others (practical knowledge for home gardeners, particular differences between species), so it's difficult to understand who it's intended for. I consider myself an "advanced amateur" when it comes to succulents, and it wasn't for me.

This book isn't for those who only want to order some cute little succulents and learn how to make crafts they found on Pinterest. This is for people who want to know about the lifecycle of these plants, where they grow (to help with choosing which varieties are wisest to buy and to replicate natural conditions at home), what they look like in the wild, and some basics of cultivation. I'm not sure why some people are complaining about the photos- They look fine to me. I mean, sure, they aren't huge, perfectly back-lit and diffused in-studio, immaculately edited, with an instagram glamour filter slapped on for hipster cred... but they get the job done. I honestly have nothing negative to sat about this book. Maybe if I become an expert in succulent identification and cultivation, I'll find some sort of minutia to nit-pick, but for the time being, I think this book has a specific audience, and those who are interested in the topic should really appreciate the work that went into making this awesome reference tool.

I got this as a gift for a friend who loves, raises, and creates container gardens with succulents. I had no clue what books he already had, but figured he could always return it to Amazon in exchange for a book he'd prefer owning, and was so happy when he told me he'd wanted this book for a long time because it was the best for his field of interest. So that's 5 stars in my book, smiling, and he's had it for about a year now and uses it almost daily for his small, growing business of succulent container gardens!

This is an excellent reference book, especially given that its topic is very far from being a well-defined category. It's quite readable, nicely printed, and seems likely to be durable (for a normal paperback book, that is). However, its aims make it less than satisfactory for someone interested in choosing or identifying succulents for the garden, houseplants, etc. As others have commented, most of the photos are of succulents in habitat. Some of these are spectacular; in others, it's almost impossible to distinguish the plant under discussion from other vegetation, rocks, etc. Generally, they don't help either to identify an unknown succulent or to picture how it might appear if you grew it. Furthermore, the selection of plants covered is clearly slanted toward the rare, hard-to-access, or distinctive. This allows for very little coverage (much less photos) of the proliferation of hybrids and visually distinctive cultivars produced by nurseries and sold for the garden or as houseplants. So, I'm glad I bought the book: it is cool to know about where these plants come from & get an idea of what they look like in their native habitat. The author describes some of the more extreme places where commonly-grown as well as unheard-of plants come from vividly, making the book an armchair voyage to some of the planet's most inhospitable terrain. Socotra sounds horrible, but I was fascinated to read about it.But I wish someone would write an equally authoritative reference work on succulents in the garden. (And leave out the categories that have no place in a landscape & are unlikely to be grown successfully by someone without a greenhouse, etc. - living stones are cool, I personally find "root succulents" repulsive, neither is a landscape plant.) No-one could keep up with the proliferation of wild & crazy hybrid Echeveria, sedums, etc., never mind all the cross-generic hybrids, not to mention the radically different appearance of genetically identical plants under different cultural conditions (with / without rain, etc.).But I'd really like to have a book that covered the top 10 most common Aeonium species / established varieties in cultivation, with clear pictures of each one - and the equivalent for the main species & standard hybrids of the other prominent succulent genera used in the garden. I don't want to buy multiple volumes per genus - I'm not planning to open a nursery - and there are already *plenty* of books on landscaping with succulents, choosing and arranging succulents for containers, crafting with succulents, etc. Meanwhile, I'm still not sure what species several of the aeoniums I'm growing are, even though I'm a plant person (and a Latinist), and I've been obsessively propagating & slightly less obsessively researching these things for a year. So, buy this book by all means. It's very cool, and the author is both a top expert and a lively writer. But don't expect it to answer all or even most of your questions about succulents you encounter in gardens, nurseries, etc.

This book contains some great reading of Mr. Dortort's travel adventures, where he seeks the rare succulent for his botanical gardens. Kind of an Indiana Jones of the Weird Plant World. I really want to go to South Africa now and see some of these amazing plants in situ. The book is vast and comprehensive, with many pictures of the plants in their native habitats. I particularly value this because it makes it clear how the plants normally live and how we can help them adapt to our world. I will be reading this from cover to cover several times at least, and referring to it often. Lots of good advice on caring for these fascinating plants, also. He even includes a number of geni that are not usually covered in "arid plant" books, like Bursera and Boswellia (copal and frankincense trees). Great stuff!

The Split History of World War II: A Perspectives Flip Book (Perspectives Flip Books), by Simon Rose

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-Each title in this engaging series is actually two books in one, right down to having two front covers and two indexes. One half of each volume describes events, people, and ideologies that represent one side's view of a major historical event or period. The other half recounts the opposing side's position. Using concise, well-researched content, this approach engages critical-thinking skills by encouraging students to look at issues from a variety of perspectives. For example, in Expansion the "Settlers' Perspective" is that "they would be settling the land and improving it both for themselves and future generations." In contrast, the "American Indian Perspective" is that "They felt cheated by the U.S. government and angry over how they were treated." Archival photographs and reproductions, in both color and black and white, effectively illustrate the texts, and sidebars offer profiles of important figures and other relevant information. The simple layout helps keep the flip concept from being fussy or confusing.α(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Excellent workbook for [undergraduate] Anatomy students, so I gave it 5 stars. I purchased it to help me study for a doctoral-level physical therapy anatomy course, and it did not have nearly enough anatomical structures to help me at all, so it was completely useless for me. I already knew all of the structures, but a few of the study questions were helpful. I will probably give this to a PT aide or student in the future who has yet to take anatomy. So just know that if you are in a doctoral-level anatomy course, this will probably not help you to study and I wouldn't waste the money if I were you, but if you are in an undergraduate anatomy course, this would be an EXCELLENT workbook to help you study. I wish I would have known about this book when I went through Anatomy as an undergrad.

I bought this Trail Guide workbook to go along with the text book. So far, I am loving both! The workbook (as is the textbook) is in spiral format, which I really like as the book will lie flat and the pages stay where they are placed. It follows along with the text as far as the contents go. There are lots of illustrations, fill in the blank, label the parts, and 'describe the action' type activities. The answers are provided in the back of the book. My plan is to really learn the material though, so I won't look at the answers until the exercise is complete! The price tag of $24.95 seems at first glance, a little steep for a workbook, but it really isn't. There is a ton of helpful information that coordinates with the text, in this workbook. I highly recommend both books.

This is an excellent review of how the musculoskeletal system works at a cellular and tissue level.I was interested in the function of each muscle. I wanted to know how to test muscles individually to see how dysfunction in performing a particular activity could lead to an anatomic diagnosis. This book was not organized anatomically, as the Trail Guide to the Body is organized, so it did not actually serve my needs.I am a physician who teaches medical students, and I found that this book was a very accurate and accessible introduction fo the function of the musculoskeletal system (plus fascia.)

LOOOOOOOVE E this book!! easy to follow to learn, got their apple apps as well. This book was my academic Book when I took anatomy to become a Dr in Acupuncture. I had taken anatomy before but this book made a huge difference in my learning ability to understand anatomy.it is a must tool for those serious about learning anatomy!!

The trail guide book is great! and although it is great to have this as it is not all colored for you and you can learn through coloring essentailly the same pictures as the main book, but the pages were the same material (glossy) so i did not find them very colorable. The idea of the book is great but the material was not use-able. Perhaps if you learn really well with coloring I would recommend to get this and photo copy pages to plain paper to color on.

I am 50 years old and attending massage school. The book they 'issue' us sucks. It sucks on a level that deserves a better word than 'sucks' but that word would offend the tender hearted. The drawings in the other book had to have been done by a 6 year old. Trail Guide is on the opposite side of that scale. I've never seen drawings that are not only very detailed but are drawn in a way that truly helps me, a student with an old brain, figure out the muscle name, orientation/insertion, how to find it, and tons of other useful information about the muscle, nerve, bone etc. I've had a lot of classes over many different subjects in my life and NO other book comes close. NO other book. If you are a massage student, do yourself a favor and run, do not walk, and buy this book! The DVD included is just as awesome. Hats off to the author and the artist. My only option is five starts but it deserves 50. No, really. One last point, I have no dog in the fight. I won't make squat if you buy the book. I just wanted you to know how freaking awesome this book, really, is.

My functional anatomy class used the corresponding text book that this work book goes along with. I am very pleased with this purchase and have found it very helpful for studying! I would definitely recommend this workbook!

love this workbook. you can color it but I use it mostly to label since I already have an anatomy coloring book. I use both together to reference the body's muscle's and joint labeling. It really does help keep me up with massage therapy work and the body itself, and even has me learning some new things I didn't learn while in massage therapy school!
