Insightful and meaningful framework for innovation. Highly recommend for anyone looking in search of a process to better harness the power of creative thinking and solution development. Bravo.

I took an innovation class at the Wharton School which was taught by one of the authors, who is not only one of the most popular professors at Wharton, but is a successful entrepreneur as well. I was blown away by the process that the professor developed for his class and how effective it was in creating real businesses. As a successful entrepreneur, I am passionate about idea and business generation, and I actually came out of the class with a new business that I feel confident will be enormously successful. After purchasing and reading his book, I realized the process isn't just a great way for entrepreneurs to identify promising business ideas, but the same process can be used to innovate within an organization. I have since bought the book for the Director of Sales at my business, and he is going to lead an innovation tournament across our organization. I can hardly wait to see the results!

The concepts in this book are not limited to R&D. We used the method to implement cost savings and productivity programs in our company and to define the next big market opportunity. The text has specific examples that illustrate the main points and the website compliments the book nicely. Go Darwinator!

For me there are some good ideas. Well supported. Uses examples and its theorical aspects are not too heavyThey also cover financial and uncertainty aspects from its application focus

Fantastic approach to innovation as management. More expensive 'innovation management' books, many out of the UK, seem to say less... With more pages!

this book was for class, not very helpful or well written.

This book is an overrated disappointment. Although it is good that the authors wrote a book on Innovation Tournaments, they really didn't go through any examples of organizations that are doing this and the challenges and opportunities to making it happen.Innovation Tournaments are not an easy thing to make happen in your organization (as an individual who has done this, I can attest to it.) And, having some organizational case studies on the pros and cons side would have been useful.I guess that it should have been obvious, when they defined innovation as an internally driven process as opposed to a customer driven process. I maintain that any innovation tournament that doesn't include the customer will fail.Instead the authors get caught up in a slick risk adjusted financial analysis tool that they recommend to evaluate new ideas.Too bad - what a disappointment.

This is one of the better recent books on innovation, although it has a slightly misleading title. Yes, authors Christian Terwiesch and Karl T. Ulrich define and discuss innovation tournaments and their possible role in making organizations more successful at innovating. But the title is too limiting; innovation tournaments are really only a portion of what it offers. In addition to being written in an easy, familiar style and being full of examples and illustrations, the book is rich with tips, models and guidelines to help readers navigate all stages of the innovation process. Terwiesch and Ulrich candidly discuss the necessity of failure and the costs of developing innovations, but they're also realistic when they describe the benefits. getAbstract recommends their book to managers who are responsible for evaluating ideas and fostering innovation.

Review

Conversions on the road to Damascus are for those who hear voices and fall prey to delusions and who would be better off seeking professional help. Much more valuable in the human story are the reflections of intelligent and ethical people who listen to the voice of reason and who allow it to vanquish bigotry and superstition. This book is a classic example of the latter.―Christopher Hitchens, author of God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons EverythingI think Godless is fabulous. It came on Friday, and I spent much of the weekend reading it. It was a revelation to me. Others have made the journey ('faith to reason,' childhood to growing up, fantasy to reality, intoxication to sobriety -- however one likes to put it), but I don't think anyone can match the (devastating!) clarity, intensity, and honesty which Dan Barker brings to the telling. And the tone is right all the way through -- not belligerent or confrontational (as is the case with so much, too much, of the literature on this subject―on both sides). I think Godless may well become a classic in its genre.―Oliver Sacks, Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the BrainAtheists are the last of the minorities in America to come out of the closet, and like other civil rights movements this one began with leaders like Dan Barker and his Freedom from Religion Foundation defending the civil liberties of godless Americans, who deserve equal protection under the Constitution. In his new book, Godless, Barker recounts his journey from evangelical preacher to atheist activist, and along the way explains precisely why it is not only okay to be an atheist, it is something in which to be proud. ―Michael Shermer, Publisher of Skeptic magazine, monthly columnist for Scientific American, author of How We Believe, Why Darwin Matters, and The Mind of the MarketMy kids are in the process of learning about literature, and a rule of thumb they’ve picked up concerns how to recognize the protagonist of a Story: it’s the character who undergoes the greatest transformation. This makes sense, because one of the hardest things we confront is the need to change. By this criterion, in the enormous story of what we all do with our lives, Dan Barker is one of the most interesting and brave protagonists I know. Godless is a fascinating memoir, a tour of one distressing extreme of religiosity, a handbook for debunking theism. But most of all, it is a moving testimonial to one man’s emotional and intellectual rigor in acclaiming critical thinking.―Robert Sapolsky, author of Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers: An Updated Guide to Stress, Stress-Related Diseases and CopingDan Barker's esteemed reputation is richly deserved. I recommend getting three copies. You will need one as a source of evidence to which you will frequently refer. There will be miles and miles of underlining as you mark the pages of special interest to you. You will need your second to lend to others. You will be enthusiastic about this book, and you will want to share its wisdom with family and friends. Others will likewise want to share it, and the book will never be returned to you. Finally, you will want a third copy to be in pristine condition on your bookshelf, since Dan Barker has created a volume which will only grow in its historical significance. ―David Mills, author of Atheist Universe

Coming to terms with one's belief in regard to whether there is a God or not is often one of the most important journeys a person will ever go through during their life. I, like many other people, wanted to be as thorough as possible in my search. As such I've read many books from both the atheist and religious communities (atheists such as Dawkins and Harris to believers such as Collins and D'souza to name only a few). At the end of the day however Barker's work proved the most influential out of all the books and speeches/debates I've seen. Why? What makes Barker works so much more superior than his colleagues? What it really boils down to is that Barker is the most well rounded in his work. We're other authors peak high in particularly areas in their delivery, such as humor or science or argumention, Barker succeeds on all fronts. And he adds plenty of uniqueness as well. He's articulate, funny, intelligent, personal and more.In "Godless" you get it all. You get a entertaining yet personal tale of a person going from one extreme to the next (from Fundamentalist Preacher to Outspoken Atheist). The story is likely to relate to most people in someway or another. This is what part one, "Rejecting God" consist of.Part two, "Why I'm An Atheist", is where Barker addresses the arguments for and against the existence of god (leaving no stone unturned). The section, in part two, "Dear Theologian", was particularly entertaining and insightful. However I won't spoil what it's about here so you'll have to read it for yourself. In part three, "What's Wrong With Christianity", Barker uses all his experience as a preacher and from studying the word of god to point out, and address the concerns of Christians, what wrong with their religion in particular and why it's wrong. There is plenty of great reasoning and humor in this section. In part four, "Life Is Good", Barker brings everything together showing how he, and you to, can live your life to the fullest even after losing your faith. The section is also very personal as he details a very rough period in his life. There's also some great insight why so many people believe in God and more in this chapter.Coming to the book I thought I already knew it all (from my other readings) but boy was I wrong. Barker has plenty of unique and fresh moments while still articulating well popular arguments. As said before there's plenty of humorous along with more serious moments in this book. There's just so much packed in this book, but not too much, and Barker puts it all together so nicely and almost perfectly that for me at least I can't find any shortcomings in this book. For anyone soul searching for their beliefs I can't recommend this book enough. Even if your just casually reading it's still awesome. I feel christians will particularly find this book appealing as the author has them in particular in mind so their likely to be able to relate to him more than some of the other popular atheist authors. The book is also motivational. I found myself inspired and more appreciative of my life after reading this book. You know what they say you only live once!Because of the quality of this book I would say it alone is enough for most people. I would only venture off into other authors if your looking for more specific approach or area in regard to the god debate. For example if your more interested in the science side than Stenger (The God Hypothesis) and Dawkins (The God Delusion) are great. If your more on the philosophical side than Harris (End Of Faith) is your go to. If your all about humor than Hitchens (God Is Not Great). And so on and so on. Even if you read those you should still check out Barker's work because of its uniqueness and quality. For the most well rounded (good at everything), easy to read, brilliantly articulate and written piece, there's nothing better than Dan Barkers "Godless: How An Evangelical Preacher Became One Of America's Leading Atheist".5/5 Stars!

Dan Barker's story is important, I think. If you are reading books by Hitch, Dawkins and Harris your are getting three different perspectives of the god/faith/religion vs science/secularism argument. I have read all three of these authors, and all three offer unique logical, philosophical, and scientific approaches. The fourth valuable perspective (the personal) is provided in this book by Dan Barker. The first half of the book covers his years of ministry and his (once ignited) steady, gradual shift from religiosity to atheism. The second half is a more logical, and philosophical dismantling of religious belief. This book is very well-written and perfectly structured. It doesn't contain science, per se. But, science is not the only tool one may use to refute god. Logical thought will do quite nicely. Science may simply be the straw that breaks the camel's back. There are parts during which I thought he meandered a bit, or stayed too long targeting a particular belief. But, by reading his story I gained a better understanding of the mind and how it can be possible for even a fundamentalist to see the light. At some point in the book, I realized there's a way to read it which helps make it more meaningful and impactful. Instead of reading it critically (although this can still be done) as a simple argument against theism, one should read it as if you are inside the mind of Dan Barker, struggling to grasp the same contradictions with which he struggled. What you are seeing in print are the conscious thought processes of someone questioning lifelong-held, previously accepted (unquestioned) convictions. Read in this way, you are witnessing the transformation of Barker's mind. If you follow the transformation, you will see how it can be done. Unreason, faith, dogma are so damaging when they are allowed to spread through cultures unhindered. With just a little bit of resistance, mountains (of bulls***) can be moved. If you dismiss this book (this perspective) as unnecessary, or lacking because it doesn't have lots of science or because you think Barker lacks the credibility to stand amongst the aforementioned authors, you'd be missing the point. Those brilliant books are still on my shelf, and will probably be read again. But, so is Barker's book. Because, while it travels a different path, it ultimately leads to the same place.Remember what Tim Minchin says, "I only read one book, but it's a good book, don't you know. I act the way I act because the Good Book tells me so. If I wanna know how to be good, it's to the Good Book that I go. Cause the Good Book is a book and it is good and it's a book." A clearer perspective can be gained by reading many books on the same subject. Read one book, and you get but one.

This was a tremendous book. I consider myself a scientific atheist and not atheist because I disbelieve religion although I do disbelieve all religions. I am an atheist because of logic and proven scientific facts, concepts and theories. But Barker brings a whole new array of information from and about religions that proves the same thing and more. It is pretty powerful that he shows Jesus is not an historical figure as he or his miracles are not mentioned anywhere by historians that lived in the same cities at the same time as Jesus although the historians do mention all the other prophets that were popping up all over the area at the same time. Jesus is also not mentioned anywhere outside of the bible in any government or other historical document recorded. References to him don't appear for decades after his supposed crucifixion and then are doctored 400 years later to add concepts of miracles, resurrection, virgin birth, ascension, etc. to the myths in the bible.

Review

"I've lost count how many times I've heard critics say the Gospels are late, anonymous, and untrustworthy sources that don't prove Jesus was divine. At last there is a book that meticulously refutes these claims with an engaging discussion of the real Jesus that will benefit both scholars and laymen who read it." -- Trent Horn, author of Answering Atheism "Thanks to Dr. Pitre's magnificent book, you will now be equipped to make the case for Jesus and the veracity of the Gospels to even the most ardent skeptics. Perhaps more importantly, you will find your own faith reawakened." -- Jennifer Fulwiler, radio host and author of Something Other Than God “In The Case for Jesus, Pitre breaks his research down, in typically accessible prose, to bring us a readable and fascinating account of how questioning one accepted academic idea put him on a path of discovery that served to strengthen, not sever, his faith. Readers who loved Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist will come away from this book with a similar sense of gratitude for such a faith-affirming presentation, and also a bit of awestruck wonder at how faith and reason can complement each other so well, when allowed to. I loved this book!” -- Elizabeth Scalia, Author of Strange Gods: Unmasking the Idols in Everyday Life and Little Sins Mean a Lot“Brant Pitre, who has already demonstrated his brilliant scholarship in earlier works, explains here in remarkably easy-to-understand ways why we can trust the Gospels. Behind his effective communication, however, is wide-ranging research and careful rethinking. In fact, this book has given me a number of important new matters to consider myself.” -- Craig S. Keener, Asbury Theological Seminary “The Case for Jesus topples the naïve skepticism that too often dominates the study of the Gospels by showing that the evidence for the truth of the Gospels is far stronger than is often assumed. Pitre has a unique talent for putting scholarly work of the highest caliber into an accessible and engaging form. This book should be on the shelf of every homilist, catechist, and Bible study leader.” -- Mary Healy,  Sacred Heart Major Seminary "Brant Pitre does a stellar job setting forth a robust and rock solid case for Jesus. The sensationalistic claims of super-sceptics are exposed as a sham as Pitre provides a meticulous presentation of the evidence about the reliability of the Gospels, who Jesus thought he was, and what he means today. A balanced, sensible, and measured book that counters the spate of hyped-up conspiracy theories that do the rounds. An informative and enjoyable read. -- Michael F. Bird, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia. "In this important book, one of America’s most brilliant young scholars wrestles with issues of profound importance concerning Jesus and his identity. Pitre, in a lively and direct manner informed by up-to-date scholarship, presents a case for Jesus as the divine Son of God, fully human and fully God. Along the way he bursts some scholarly bubbles and sets a much needed cat amongst the proverbial pigeons. A delight to read!" -- Chris Tilling, King's College, London“Like a room full of stale air, the popular-level conversation about Christian origins could use an open window or two.  Thankfully, we now have one in Brant Pitre’s Case for Jesus.  Personable, accessible, engaging – all supported by top-notch scholarship. Read it.” –- Nicholas Perrin, Dean of the Wheaton Graduate School

This is a very meticulously reasoned argument attempting to show that Jesus had a Divine self-conception. That is, Jesus believed, and claimed, that he was God.Pitre begins by posing C.S. Lewis’ famous “trilemma” to the reader. If Jesus claimed to be God, we have three ways to respond – he was either a Liar, Lunatic, or Lord. Pitre’s work in this book strives to bring us back, face to face, with this trilemma. To accomplish this, Pitre needs to defeat another popular notion in the modern mind – that Jesus, or at least much of the Gospel material about him, was a “Legend.” If Pitre can show that Jesus did, in fact, historically claim Divinity, we will be forced to respond to his claim and answer Jesus’ own question for ourselves – “Who do you say that I am?”To accomplish this Pitre first attempts to show that the Gospels are historically reliable. He believes that, contrary to modern scholarly opinion, the Gospels were indeed written by the authors they have been attributed to (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), that they were intended to portray historically accurate biographical pictures of Jesus, and that they were written much more closely to the time of Jesus than liberal scholars assume (Pitre tentatively dates the synoptic Gospels all before the destruction of the Temple in AD 70). These three pieces of evidence – authorship, intent, and dating – all lead Pitre to the conclusion that the Gospels give us historically accurate information about Jesus. After setting the stage by arguing for the accuracy of our sources, Pitre delves into the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and tries to show that although it is not always explicit (i.e. Jesus doesn’t say “I am God, worship Me.”) even the synoptics portray Jesus as claiming Divinity. Using evidence such as Jesus’ use of the titles “Son of Man” and “I Am,” prophesy from the book of Daniel, Jesus’ “stilling of the storm,” the transfiguration, the pronouncement of the forgiveness of the parlytic’s sins, the riddle about the Son of David being David’s “Lord,”, the crucifixion, and the resurrection, Pitre makes his case. In the end, he believes that not only do the Gospel authors portray Jesus as Divine, but that these claims came from Jesus himself. Thus we are led, full circle, back to the trilemma. We can call Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord, but not, according to Pitre, a Legend. This was a really interesting read from a conservative scholar. His exegesis of many Gospel passages illuminate how the Hebrew Scriptures provide a much needed backdrop for understanding each story. The Gospels are much more nuanced than we might first think and oftentimes one saying or image may evoke whole passages or concepts from the Old Testament that would have been apparent to early Jewish readers. As Pitre argues, understanding the Jewish context of the synoptic authors helps in understanding their Christology. In the end, I agree with Pitre that the Gospels are generally more historically accurate than “mainstream” scholars give them credit for. I think it’s plausible that the Gospel titles reveal their true authors and that they were written fairly early after Jesus’ death (before the fall of Jerusalem). I also agree that the Synoptics may implicitly ascribe Divinity to Jesus – although I don’t think that is an open and shut case. If there were more explicit cases in the synoptic Gospels where Jesus claimed Divinity, it would help his case. It still seems to me the only explicit sayings we have come from the Gospel of John, which even Pitre doesn’t seem to argue is historically reliable (at least he doesn’t focus on this in the book). It’s probably outside the scope of this book, but I would have loved to see Pitre address the idea of Jesus as Apocalyptic Prophet. He interacts with several scholars who accept this notion (EP Sanders, Dale Allison, Bart Ehrman, John Meier) and it’s a viable option in the world of Historical Jesus scholarship. I think it’s a relevant topic in all discussions surrounding a Historical Jesus and can be a large factor in how one answers the question of Jesus’ identity. This study is worth reading regardless of your theological persuasion, and Pitre’s arguments deserve serious consideration.

Lots of reviewers have written great reviews, so this one will be fairly brief. Brant Pitre's books, this one included, are an example of what is best in the new scriptural studies emerging today. His research is solid and meticulous - no sloppiness here! - and he writes with a refreshingly strong Catholic faith. This book carefully and effectively undoes the harm of decades of scholars' attempts to debunk the Gospels. He very effectively rebuts 20th century scholars' claims that we don't know who wrote the Gospels, and that they were written so long time after Jesus' time on earth that they lack credibility as eyewitness, historical accounts. Step by step, with each chapter building on the next, Pitre shows the opposite to be true. Christians who have been disturbed by the debunkers will be strengthened, confirmed, and given much joy by this book. I've just purchased three more copies to give to friends - one of them a Catholic high school teacher and two, Catholic priests. But I think Christians of any denomination will welcome this book.Pitre's writing style is a joy to read: lucid, clear, and very easy to understand (even when I'm tired at the end of the day), without being annoyingly clever (as some popularizers can be) or pushy (as some apologists are). (I see Pitre as neither a popularizer nor an apologist; he is a scripture scholar who also is a fantastic communicator.) Without any attempt on his part to be "entertaining," Pitre has written a cliff-hanger - I couldn't put the book down! His insights - and now I'm speaking of the insights in all three of his books that I've read so far - Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, Jesus the Bridegroom, and this book, The Case for Jesus - are profound and deeply enriching spiritually. Although I've questioned a few of his insights, most of them have moved me profoundly, with a sense of wonder, and deep love and gratitude to Our Lord. Reading his books is, for me, a real form of prayer. I am looking forward to reading Jesus and the Last Supper (borrowed from the library to see whether I'll want to buy my own copy); this last book, per its reviewers, is aimed at a scholarly audience and different in tone from the three very accessible books I named above, but I'm expecting this book to be a treasure, too.In all of his books, Brant Pitre's lucid writing style, coupled with his solid scholarship, deep faith, and beautiful love for Our Lord, makes for a very special reading experience. I appreciate his respect for and great knowledge of Judaism, and the way he helps us to see the rich continuity between the Jewish and Christian faiths. Brant Pitre’s books are a real gift to us all.

Being an ordained minister, I can truthfully say that Dr. Brant Pitre’s book, “The Case for Jesus” is a long awaited, clearly articulated and fascinating book about Jesus and his message. Having gone through many classes about Scripture, and graduating more confused than when I started, I have read Pitre’s book and thanked God that the Spirit guided Pitre’s endeavor. Dr. Pitre argues clearly and authoritively the case for the existence of Jesus and his claims of Deity. Yes, I did say “Deity.” I challenge any scholar to find fault with Pitre’s arguments. As usual, Dr. Pitre argues that you must look at Scripture through the eyes of a 1st century Jew. Doing this, brings clarity and reason to Jesus’ existence and claims. It has been Brant’s forte in preaching and moving many to discern for themselves the message of Christ.I have used Dr. Brant Pitre’s materials in many workshops and would love to meet him some day in person. In the meantime, I will continue to encounter him in his books and lectures and share my discovery with others. This is a MUST read for any Christian and even those who doubt the existence of the Christ.

Purchased for my son for Christmas (he was 10 at the time). He literally freaked out. He loves all things Zelda, and absolutely adores these books (I bought 1 and 2). He proceeded to read both in the matter of days (and this is a kid who received video games & such too). I am writing this review 9mos later, and he still grabs them when we go on road trips, etc. Great books, and I am purchasing the next in the series soon!

This was also a awesome manga adaptation of the video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and I recommend this manga book to those who like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Ocarina of Time has always been one of my favorite video games, along with Majora's Mask, they have to be, hands down, the best games I've ever played. Part of what made me like them so much was their deep story and rich characters. But, being N64 games, the technology wasn't quite there for the developers to be able to tell a complete story with 100% full character development and structure. The cutscenes had to be reduced in order to leave room for actual gameplay; this was great since it left it to the player's imagination to fill in the blanks and connect the dots to make the story complete. What this manga does (along with Majora's Mask's manga) is expand on the game's story and focus on characters instead of fighting/battles. It's a great purchase if you're a fan of both games and I fully recommend it. The drawing are beautiful, taking inspiration from the anime-like style of the games' actual artwork.

my sons loves these books! they need to keep them coming!

I had just finished playing Ocarina of Time Master Quest a few days before I purchased part 1 of this manga. The manga really stays true to the game, while adding in it's own little elements! It really showed the relationship between Link and Zelda that we all wanted to see! And although Link is a mute in the game, his personality is exactly what I expected it to be, which is great. I really loved this book, and part 1, some moments actually left me touched. And of course the book is "backwards"... it's a manga. That is how they read in Japan.

I haven't read this book yet, but I just beat the game so I'll get on it soon. I didn't want spoilers. I've read a few others and even though they are categorized as children's graphic novels, I still enjoy them as an adult.

I bought it for my grandson and he loves it.

I lovelovelove Ocarina of Time, and I loved the manga. I'm only giving four stars because a few pages were ripped out, but it wasn't anything that really took away from the story, and I didn't feel like it was totally worth it to send it back and wait for a new copy.Obviously, some things are different from game to book, but I enjoyed the story nonetheless. When I ordered this, I got Vol 1 and Majora's Mask
