Review

"This is Schmidt's best novel yet—darker than The Wednesday Wars and written with more restraint, but with the same expert attention to voice, character and big ideas."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Reproductions of Audubon plates introduce each chapter in this stealthily powerful, unexpectedly affirming story of discovering and rescuing one’s best self, despite family pressure to do otherwise."—Booklist, starred review "Readers will miss Doug and his world when they’re done, and will feel richer for having experienced his engaging, tough, and endearing story."—School Library Journal, starred review "The book is exceptionally well written. Schmidt creates characters that will remain with the reader long after the book is done. Doug’s voice is unforgettable as he tries to help and protect his mom. . . .While there is much stacked against him, he is a character filled with hope that the reader cannot help but root for. Push this one on readers; they will not be sorry. . . .Schmidt writes a journal-type story with a sharp attention to detail, patterns in the story line, and an unexpected twist at the end."–VOYA

I loved this book too. Usually companion books to the original story, in this case The Wednesday Wars, are not as good or even horrible. Also a National Book Finalist like the original, this book stood on its own as a great novel. There is less emphasis on literature but Jane Eyre is brought into the story as well as art/drawing, science and geography. It is set in the 1968-1969 in the era of the Vietnam War and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. The main character Doug, moves with his very poor family from NYC to a small town so his drunk abusive father can find work. Starting out as an outcast due to his family's financial situation and his brother and father's criminal reputation, Doug is taken under the wing of a few citizens of Maryville like the town librarian, his science teacher, and the grocer's daughter who see him as his own person, a good person with talents and intelligence that no one has tried to nurture and grow until now. They help him get through the abuse and neglect he has to endure as well the town suspicion of his family for the store robberies occurring around town and his older brother coming home from the war with life-changing physical and mental injuries. This was also written as a children's book but as an adult I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am 40+ and enjoy a broad spectrum of genres in literature. I find however, that when I want a good fiction book to escape with, many adult books seem to lack a certain essence of insight and enrichment that I do find in many stories written for teens.I am amazed at Gary Schmidt's talent to create very different stories to present a variety of life's hardships candidly, without any sugar coating, and yet finds a way to show the reader some sweetness and hope through life's challenges. I loved Wednesday Wars and consider it one of my favorite books in a list of my top ten or so. This has definitely been added to that list! I found it to be cathartic, as someone who grew up with an unstable and abusive parent.I cannot recommend Schmidt's Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy enough either, totally different type of story again, but your life will be better for reading it.Also if you find these stories enriching a couple from other authors I recommend are: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - a must!!! Tangerine and a Plague Year by Edward Bloor, and The fault in Our Stars by John Green, I could name a bunch of others.

If you likes The Wednesday Wars you will love Okay for Now. Anybody can read this and enjoy it. It is a book about a kid named Doug who is trying to adjust to a new life in a new town, without any of his friends. You also learn about Doug’s tough home life, he has troubles with his father and his brother. All while he is missing his oldest brother who is out at war. Thankfully there are new people that Doug meets in the new town that expect the best of him. They empower him, and he empowers them. One of my favorite parts of the book is how he relates his life to the art he draws.

“Okay for Now” captured my attention on the first page and I found it hard to put down. It’s a story of a teenage boy struggling to survive in a very dysfunctional family, in a new area where he knows no one, and in a new school. Despite numerous setbacks, he perseveres and makes positive life changes. The story is filled with quirky characters and invaluable lessons about love, life and survival.

I bought this book to read with a book club even though it wasn't a book I would have picked up on my own. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book is! I loved it and couldn't put it down. I felt like the book presented a difficult time in history and a flawed family with so much hope and honesty. I appreciated that the characters in the book had difficult decisions to make on a daily basis and that the reader got to see the consequences of their poor choices and the good that came when they purposely made good choices. I was worried it would be a bummer to read, but it was so uplifting. I loved it so much I had my husband read it and my 5th grade daughter. They both loved it too. I will definitely be reading other books by this author.

As a former teacher, I found so many similarities between Doug Swieteck and students who -- for various reasons -- fall deep into the cracks of formal education. The trite adage of "it takes a village to raise a child" is raised to its best level when Doug's talents are perceived by an assistant in a sleepy library. Life lessons are taught using John James Audubon's beautiful art as the launch pad for Doug's awakening mind.

I was introduced to the Junior or Young Adult gendre of books only a couple of years ago. When I was a kid we relied on things like "Lassie," "Black Beauty," "The Secret Garden," and the Nancy Drew series. But nothing spoke to the life I was experiencing as a troubled teen. And then I had to read the "Wednesday Wars" for a Sabbath Reading for Pastors program and made the delightful discovery that there is something substantive between "Little House on the Prairie" and Harry Potter. Several months ago I heard an interview with Gary Schmidt on the car radio. He was so interesting and the things he was saying about his newest book were so intriguing that I ordered "Okay for Now" for my Kindle as soon as I got home. This story seems to be about real kids with real problems. When I was young, no one talked about their parents getting divorced or any other kind of family trouble. We kept everything inside and maybe didn't even let our pastor or our favorite teacher know what was eating at us. But books like this one invite a young person to think about what she's going through, maybe talk about it with a friend, maybe even discuss these things in the classroom. How refreshing! And how healthy! My oldest grandchildren are too old for this group of books now, and my youngest are not quite ready, but Grandma will be waiting to grace their Christmas tree with books that were really written for them. The Rev. Judith A. Meier

Book delivers exactly what it purports to deliver. Since all the songs are written in the key of C, many will be in a key different than the original song. However, the songs are accurately notated for the key of C.Good selection of songs. So many I forgot, but now enjoy playing again.

I am an intermediate guitar player and this is fairly easy to learn from also it is from my generation. I practice wilth it almost nigtly. Hal Lonard produces very valuable material for the guitar. If you are looking for a advanced book, this is not one.

I have bought most of this series of Hal Leonard's Easy Fake Books---including this one---for use with my music keyboard. I have found ALL of them to be excellent and well produced, and they all have a good selection of songs. So I can give them my highest recommendation for use by other keyboard players.

Good selection of old songs. Didn't have some of the stuff I thought it would, but good anyway

great introduction to music that I know and enjoy, songs are written giving me much enjoyment, I look forward to practicing everyday, great value

1 more for my collection.

THE CHOICE OF SONGS IS VERY GOOD AND I LIKE THIS SERIES AS IT IS EASY TO PLAY.

I was hoping for more than just the key of C. Otherwise, the book makes it easy to play tunes.

Despite the click-bait title, the book contains a lot of important facts, stories, and statistics about the status of women’s rights under different economic systems. It is a short, worthwhile and compelling read, and will contribute to the interesting and important conversation about what role the state can play in addressing systemic inequalities. It’s also really funny in parts.

I normally would not have read something with such an attention starved title but I saw excerpts on Twitter and was moved by how logical the arguement was. It's a compelling stance on how women with financial freedom make better and more fulfilling choices in life using examples from several countries and political systems. It seems a simple enough concept but she really dug in with this one. I'd recommend it, especially to female friends.

An excerpt from the book: " The woman returned to work after the birth of her baby and tried her best to keep up with the demands of a small start-up. But she was nursing. And the baby kept her up at night. She would attend meetings bleary-eyed and unprepared. She called in sick when the nanny didn't show. She found a place in a good nursery, but if her son got sick, they sent him home. Her husband traveled for business, and she had no family in the area. Jake, always the optimist, believed things would improve once the child was older. He even offered to babysit in a pinch. His star employee managed to hold on for six months. Then she quit. That night Jake called me to share the news. Dejected and frustrated, he told me, "I'm never hiring a woman again." "But she's just one woman," I said. "Not every woman is going to make her choice." "There's no way my boss will let me," he said. His voice was low. "And it's the baby thing. I can't be sure of anything about any employee, but I can be curtain that a man won't have a baby." I think I hung up on him. But it really wasn't Jake's fault. What could he do in a system that provides no support for women when they become mothers, that forces women to choose between their careers and their families?"It's hardly possible to imagine any sane person who could protect the system described in the excerpt above. For those who rave about same size penises: the book is not about socialist penises, it's not even about sex (despite clickbait title). This book is about exploitation of women in a capitalist society. For those who rave about greedy low lives: did you guys try to read about socialism anything besides mindless fascist propaganda?

An excellent book --on a subject that not many cannot afford to write on. Thoroughly researched and a new perspective in a world where one can hardly make any neutral, never mind positive *informed* comments on socialism. I would recommend.

This was a great read and a fantastic history of socialism in Eastern Europe as well!

Nearly 3 decades after the fall of Berlin Wall, some socialists still push commie propaganda. This book is clickbate (duh, sex!) and is completely divorced from reality.

For a book you can read in an afternoon, Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism (and other arguments for economic independence) packs a real punch. Ghodsee's academic bona fides are apparent in the deftness of her argument, but absent in her style. It's really fun to read.In fact, it's the "other arguments" that make up the majority of the book. In addition to sex, Ghodsee tackles how unregulated capitalism exploits women at work, as mothers, and in their (our) emotional lives. But this is not just a catalogue of complaints. In the final chapter, Ghodsee offers concrete suggestions of how we can improve our lot. It is an excellent primer on socialist feminism and offers great suggestions for further reading. This book reminds us that so many of our frustrations are not because we're insufficient, but because our economic system stacks the deck against us, and together we make some change.

The author was writing this book by studying the life in Socialist countries in her office. She never lived in a socialist country. I would recommend her to go Cuba or Venezuela and spend a a few years and then write a book.I lived in Eastern Europe, and the life under socialism was so horrible, that no man or women had better sex compare to capitalist countries. Everyday struggle to get food, to get basic necessities, not to mentioned that women could not get any hygiene products.I'm amazed that people given 5 stars and great reviews. These people most likely never lived in socialist countries either. It's all utopia.

It is 1063 during the reign of Edward the Confessor, king of England and Wales, and thirteen year old Evyn is a serf who lives near Carmarthen, Wales, with his father, a widower, on the estate of Lord Rhywallon. His mother Joan and all the little ones had died from a fever the year before. Evyn has dreamed all his life of becoming a storiawr or storyteller. His father’s brother, Uncle Morgan, returns after some eight or nine years’ absence and promptly insults the sons of the powerful neighboring Lord Gryffin who claimed to be king of Wales, at a community feast. I retaliation, they murder whom they think is Morgan and cut off Evyn’s tongue. However, they actually killed Evyn’s father. Morgan rescues the boy but sells him into slavery on the vast estates of Lady Ealdgyth, the common-law wife of Earl Harold Godwinson of Wessex, where he, now mute and unable to say his name, becomes known as Shadow. Harold’s sister was King Edward’s wife. His mistress sends Evyn to a monastery where he is taught to read and write by Lewys, a fellow Welshman. After this, he is made the personal servant, then squire, and finally foster son to Earl Harold, who later becomes the King of England, an is called “the King’s Shadow.” The two travel the countryside together, and Evyn is there for the battles of Carmarthen where Gryffin’s insurrection is destroyed, of Stamford Bridge where the combined armies of Norse King Harald Hardrada and Harold’s own brother Tostig are defeated, and of Hastings or Senlac Hill with the forces of William the Conqueror. History, of course, records that Harold, the last Saxon king of England, dies at Hastings. But what happens to Evyn, now just sixteen? Will he be killed too or will he survive? There are a few oaths, a couple of instances of drinking ale or mead, and a reference to dancing, but otherwise this is good historical fiction, reminding me a little of G. A. Henty as one reads about Evyn’s growth in self-confidence and courage while learning how to deal with both the physical and emotional effects of his injury. There are two caveats that parents may want to be aware of before choosing The King’s Shadow for their children. First, the descriptions of Evyn’s tongue being cut off and of his father and later uncle being killed, while not overly graphic, might be disturbing to younger or especially sensitive readers. Second, Harold makes a political marriage while he has another wife who had borne his children. It might be a good discussion point to compare this situation with Solomon and his many wives and concubines. It is interesting to see how “professional book reviewers” differ in their opinion of this book. Publishers Weekly calls it a “clunky debut” in which “Characterizations are wooden and oddly distant,” with “clicheed phrases” and “potentially fascinating historical details” that “are poorly integrated into the story.” However, Booklist says that it is a “finely written account” where “Evyn learns about loyalty, honor, and bravery, and he comes to realize that by chronicling the fate of his king, he has actually become a storyteller.” I tend to agree with Booklist, but it makes me wonder if these folks really know what they’re talking about.

Required reading turned out to be the best book of the year!

My son (13) found this book to be very sad and sometimes hard to read. But, overall it was a good book.

For anyone who loves history especially in the middle ages, this book is fascinating. It gives an inside view on the battle of hastings from a unique viewpoint. My advice for reading this volume is to ignore its length and simply let it whisk you away into the medieval world. You won't be disappointed.

Great book that arrived on time!

This is required reading book for my son for school

For our grand-daughter's birthday.

The book came in great condition

This strange title turns out to be a perfect summation of the book. The narrator / protagonist was a wealthy land owner named Ximen Nao who was executed when the Communists gained power in China. In heaven, Lord Yama (the judge in Chinese folklore’s version of the afterlife) sentences Ximen Nao to be sent back to Earth as a donkey, and—in subsequent lives—as an ox, a pig, a dog, and, finally and briefly, as a monkey. He’s always sent back to the family of one of his former underlings, Lan Lian, and the story follows that family over the course of several decades through the Cultural Revolution and China’s grand reforms. The early parts (the lives of donkey, ox, and part of pig) are centered on Lan Lian’s decision to remain an independent farmer. Mao Zedong promised all farmers the right to remain independent contractors if they wished, but there was great pressure—first from the community and later from his own family—to become part of the commune. This ends up dividing the family, and ultimately Lan Lian ends up on his own. The latter part of the book (i.e. dog and monkey lives) deals with Lan Lian’s children (and eventually their children), and—particularly--with Lan Jiefang who shares a birthmark and a stubborn streak with his father. Lan Jiefang’s stubbornness is revealed as a desire to divorce his wife and to marry a younger woman. His equally stubborn wife refuses the divorce, and Jiefang and his young lover become ostracized. At the tail end of the book we see how Lan Jiefang’s son is afflicted by the same dogged determination to pursue a costly path—as a respected member of the police force he falls for a former classmate who has become a pariah. The book mixes humor with tragedy. The animal incarnations of Ximen Nao each have its own personality, but retain some of the landlord’s character and memories. The animal stories are both part of and comedic counterpoint to the tales of woe experienced by Lan Lian’s family. Mo Yan has cameo appearances throughout the book, though in the dog’s life section he plays a more substantial role. References to Mo Yan’s character invariably come with self-deprecating humor. The author creates characters that the reader is interested in. What I call stubbornness is really a tenacious willingness to suffer for the principle of pursing one’s own happiness. In the case of Lan Jiefang and his wife, the reader is likely to be torn by the gray situation. The wife seems the more sympathetic character, but, still, one can’t help but appreciating the tenacity of Lan Jiefang and his willingness to suffer so greatly on the principle that “the heart wants what the heart wants.”In addition to a good story with vibrant characters, this book offers a birds-eye view of China in the latter half of the 20th century. What is happening in the lives of the characters isn’t divorced from what is going on in the world, but is shaped by it. One notices this most vividly across the three generations over which the book’s story unfolds—with the middle generation (Lan Jiefang’s) serving as hinge point. When Lan Jiefang’s half-brother goes from being a Communist Party apparatchik to the wealthy CEO of a large firm, it’s a reflection of the societal undercurrents.I enjoyed this book, and would recommend it for readers of fiction—and particularly translated literary fiction.

Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, published in 2006, is a historical novel by Chinese writer Mo Yan, who won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. It chronicles the lives of one Chinese family through the second half of the twentieth century, but it is far from a conventional period epic. In fact, it is likely to be one of the oddest novels you’ll ever read. The story is told as an extended conversation between two narrators, one of whom on several occasions dies and undergoes reincarnation. Ximen Nao is a landowner in the agricultural district of Northeast Gaomi Township. He is a wealthy and respected member of the community until the Communist Revolution, when he is executed so his land can be redistributed. When the novel opens, Ximen Nao is in the underworld, being tortured by the demon minions of Lord Yama, the judge in charge of assigning reincarnations. His soul is sent back to Earth in the body of a donkey, born in the very same village where he previously resided. While a donkey, he maintains some of his human intelligence and is able to observe and interact with his descendants and former neighbors. At the same time, he also adopts the nature of a donkey, concerns himself with donkey matters, and socializes with his fellow donkeys. This cycle of reincarnation continues throughout the book, as Ximen Nao comes back successively as an ox, pig, dog, monkey, and finally as a human child who serves as one of the narrators. Admittedly, this is disorienting at first. As the novel goes on, however, Mo Yan leaves enough bread crumbs for the reader to follow the trail of what’s going on, and after a while one really appreciates this unique manner of storytelling. As a donkey, Ximen Nao becomes the property of Lan Lian, one of his former tenant farmers, who has married Ximen Nao’s former concubine and is now raising Ximen Nao’s children. While all the farmers of Gaomi Township, under Chairman Mao’s urging, are joining the local farming cooperative, Lan Lian defiantly chooses to remain an independent farmer. As the village’s sole holdout, he (and his donkey) suffer great persecution for this decision. Though often told in a satirical manner, the novel vividly brings to life the paranoia and vindictiveness of the Cultural Revolution, when anyone accused of displaying remotely capitalist tendencies could be punished by their vigilante neighbors. The novel spans the years 1950 to 2000, so Mo Yan later gets the opportunity to apply his biting wit to China’s recent transformation towards capitalism.Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out is really a fascinating look at Chinese history and a fun read loaded with dark humor. The book’s one major fault is that it is just too long. Lengthiness itself is not a fault, but there is definitely some fat that could be trimmed here. The midsection, in particular, sometimes makes overly protracted digressions into the animal lives, replete with feces and sex jokes. One must admit, however, that when Mo Yan tries to be funny, he truly is funny. It is admirable the way he effortlessly weaves lowbrow profanity into his epic literary narrative. In real life, Mo Yan grew up in Gaomi, and he playfully inserts himself as a supporting character in the book, a troublemaking problem child who grows up to be an overrated writer. For all its laughs, however, the overall arc of the novel is ultimately tragic, as we watch members of the family and community meet with disappointment, dishonor, and death. The book contains some profoundly moving scenes of emotional power that belie its predominantly satirical bent. Together the light and the dark, the high and the low, the comedy and the tragedy, all add up to a truly memorable reading experience.

I'm not a scholar of Chinese literature, but I've been reading Mo Yan's novels in consecutive order. Like Big Breasts and Wide Hips the narrative's chronology sweeps across several decades and has many characters, their names, physical attributes and personalities unmemorable. The four characters that stand out in this novel are the father, his son, Ximen Nao (and his multiple animal reincarnations), and "Mo Yan", apparently a fictional and perhaps caricatural representation of the author. Clinging to Mao Zedong's license to let individual farmers retain their private ownership of their land during China's great collectivization movement, the father defies local pressures to join the local collective and maintains his narrow strip of land as a subsistence plot. His son faces the choice of turning his back on his father or joining him in being spurned by the whole community. Ximen Nao, who is reincarnated as a Donkey, an Ox, a Pig, a Dog, a Monkey, and finally a human, tells most of the narrative, basically an eye witness account of events in the township from his various animal perspectives. It's an interesting story told from the animals perspectives, which makes me admire Mo Yan's imagination. However, some of it feels like recycling language, situations, and imagery from his previous works. As a work in itself, I would say it's not worth the long slog. Republic of Wine, The Garlic Ballads, and Red Sorghum were more original.
