Strong title? Yes, because that is exactly what this book represents. It is not just a wonderful cookbook with countless stories chronicling early California (and Western) culture within its pages and recipes. All cooks who love the West and California should have this book in their collection. Shame it is out of print, making purchase expensive but worth it. I so enjoyed Ms Higuera-McMahan's narratives and reflections on another simpler time but rich in family, food and culture. The information within this jewel can easily be lost over time. I read and study a lot about early Western history especially California but it is rare to have an account of what these hardy, wonderful people ate and how their food enriched their lives beyond "nourishment." I do not know if this book has a presence in any of California's museums but should. As a former 4th grade teacher where California history is taught, I wish I had this book to share with my students. It would make a wonderful extension of the curriculum. Thanks to Jacqueline for this genuine reflection on the early Rancho life in this great state.

My go-to cookbook for something special. Ranks #1 in my 2 long shelves of cookbooks. The ingredients are not hard to find here in San Diego. Be sure to read ahead and check the times (several steps can often be done in parallel).It's hard to pick a favorite but my wife insists we make Grandmama's potato pan rolls for special occasions. The frijoles de la olla are amazing and authentic and the butterflied leg of lamb (with salsa) with grilled veggies, beer-buttered grilled bread and grilled eggplant is our favorite Easter dinner for our family gathering. Wonderful!

The Book is Written in Detail no Short Cuts and Adapts to Ingredients available in Todays Markets, it does not call for you to slaughter you own beef, nor grow your own Corn.

I expected more in the way of traditional Mexican meals. I was disappointed.

I have acquired several books on Californio cuisine. This is the best.

I was looking for a book that had family recipes that dated back to the Californios, and this book had it all. And as an added cherry on top, the Higuera rancho was right in my area, many of the descendents are still around here. Meaningless to other people but it's kind of a nice touch for me.

The second section gives a synopsis of Ray's early life and criminal history, describes his prison break, and details his wanderings before arriving in Los Angeles in November 1967. Swanson intersperses Ray's travels with a discussion of changes in King's work, specifically his opposition to the Vietnam War and his "Poor People's Campaign." The third section begins on March 17, 1968, as Ray and King both leave California. King headed to Memphis to support sanitation workers, and Ray followed and planned the murder. King's activities, private conversations, and public statements leading up to April 4, counter Ray's surveillance of King and preparations for the murder and his escape. The assassination unfolds moment-by-moment, as does Ray's flight from the scene. Author James Swanson has previously written books on Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy for young people and now has written a timely account on the life and assassination of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Yes, the book was written for youngsters but I as an adult found the book to be riveting reading as well. If you have a youngster interested in American history then I, as a retired elementary school teacher, would highly recommend this book for you. I believe it would be sure to hold his or her interest. Thank you, Mr. Swanson, for writing these books for young minds to read.

OMG so many facts surrounding the assassination of Dr. King. Written for a broad range of ages and an easy read. GET IT!!

Great book that's well-written. If you're looking for good, basic info about King's assassination, this is the book for you.

This book walked me through the great deeds done by Dr.King. It has pictures/photographs from the actual days when those chain of events occurred. It helped me understand the significance and the contribution of Dr.King in the civil rights movement in America. The events leading to and after the demise of Dr.King is tragic indeed.

Swanson is a great author at capturing these historical moments.

It is listed and not a good book

Good read that is well written. It takes the reader thru the early civil rights era, and touches briefly on some of the influences during that time.

Swanson NEVER disappoints! I learned so much from this book. As always, it a completely approachable text causing middle schoolers to forget they are reading non-fiction.

I bought it for a friend; the book fell open at the 3rd or 4th page: (you cannot reassemble all the shards that litter your path....) started to cry with joy, found the rest of the pages were just as full of messages to me, to family and friends, to all....kept that copy and ordered 2 more and will I am sure, order many more. And I don't even read poetry!!!!!!....well, didn't.

Do NOT buy the kindle version of this book.The layout on the digital kindle version is terrible.Reads in bits and pieces. Not a whole page written in kindle. Maybe 4-6 lines per page.I haven't seen the hardcover or paperback version of this book, but it HAS to be better than the kindle version.But, for the price?I'm still disappointed with this kindle book.Buy at your own discretion.

I am really enjoying this book of poetry. The meditations really let you slow down an ponder on the thought. This is kind of silly but the only suggestion I have is that the book should be half the height. There are so few words on a page, which is by design and important for the way you read the meditations as it helps you to pause on each. But I hate waste and I feel like It's wasting resources...

These are thoughtful poems, lovely meditations, lyrically and softly recorded, observations and subtle advice for the sensitive soul. The writer seems to sense that the sparseness of her poetic offerings leave room for the reader to blossom within.

This is for first-time beginners. I am a relatively experienced climber and this book did not teach me anything extra. Besides, the best way to learn is on the rocks, not in a book. If you're heart-set on book learning, go with the Falcon Guide SPI manual. Way better, newer, better photos.

I've been a climber for years and yet I am still learning from Katie's book. She is straight forward and points out things that I have always thought about but have never had another person state. I am thankful I purchased this book and will be recommending it to my female climbing friends new and seasoned to the sport. Thanks Katie!

As a woman climber I did take a lot from this book but I admit I was looking for more beta as it were for those of us already past the fear stage and the initial desire to climb. I think this is a great book for women who are thinking about climbing as it seems more oriented to the new climber, which is great, but I didn't gain a whole lot as someone having been climbing for several years.

Was hoping for more technical tips for female climbers. Instead, this book focused mostly on the mental and emotional challenges of overcoming fear. Lots of personal stories from various women climbers instead of actual way to use our lighter less muscley bodies.

Love this book

I have been climbing a year indoors and hover in the 5.10a-c ranges. I thought the book would help me have some breakthroughs specifically geared for women. It touches upon some things I could do to improve towards the end of the book. Felt the guide is better suited for those who are starting out rather than for those who have some experience. The book is heavy on personal experiences by the author and fellow female climbers which was nice leisure reading but it did not necessarily add to the content of the book. More on training and exercises would have helped this book get a higher rating from me.

if you're looking for all the techinical stuff get another book. however this is perfect for those starting out and need the inspiration from other female climbers who have done rock climbing. it gives a different perspective on rock climbing since as a female we have less strength then men and it walks you through over coming things on the rock that a man may not understand. the best part is just reading that nomatter your life style or fitness level you can learn to climb!
