DO NOT PUT IN PRINT I apologize for not getting back to you before Aug 19, but I'm not so interested in having my endorsement in print. I do want you to know, however, that I found the Road to the Code program extremely effective for a VERY language disabled but bright student. The amount of structured repetition and review were better than any other materials I have used, and they have allowed him to begin to read. About the Author

Benita A. Blachman, Ph.D., is a professor in the Reading and Language Arts Department and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Learning Disabilities in the School of Education at Syracuse University. She also holds a courtesy appointment in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department. She has a doctoral degree in educational psychology from the University of Connecticut and is a former special education teacher, reading specialist, and learning disabilities consultant. She has published extensively in the area of early literacy, focusing her research on early intervention to prevent reading failure and on the factors that predict reading achievement. Dr. Blachman is currently directing a project at Syracuse University (in collaboration with researchers at Yale Medical School and the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center) funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to investigate the influence of intensive reading intervention on patterns of brain activation in young children. Dr. Blachman has served on the professional advisory boards of the National Center for Learning Disabilities, the National Dyslexia Research Foundation, and the Neuhaus Center. Her edited book Foundations of Reading Acquisition and Dyslexia: Implications for Early Intervention was published recently by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. Eileen Wynne Ball, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where she was the recipient of two major teaching awards. She has a doctoral degree in education from Syracuse University, where she also earned a master's degree in urban education. Before joining the faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Ball received a second master's degree from Northeastern Illinois University and taught at Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois; she also taught at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, where she created and coordinated Le Moyne's program for special education teachers. Prior to her university work, Dr. Ball was an urban classroom teacher for 12 years. In Chicago, she directed and taught in The Parents School, an early model in alternative urban education, and she continues to do educational consulting nationally. Her research in phonological awareness has won her grants and fellowships from the National Dyslexia Research Association, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, and the Spencer Foundation. Dr. Ball is returning to UIC after completing another 2 years as a full-time third-grade classroom teacher during which she deepened her belief that classroom practices and classroom teachers must inform educational research. Rochella Black, M.S., has been a kindergarten teacher, first-grade teacher, and special education resource teacher for 24 years, teaching in both the inner-city schools of Syracuse, New York, and the suburban schools in Northport-East Northport, New York. Over the years, she has also served as a private tutor for students of all ages who were experiencing difficulty learning to read. In addition, Ms. Black was the project coordinator of the large-scale kindergarten and first-grade reading research project directed by Dr. Blachman during which the Road to the Code manual was developed and evaluated. She has presented numerous seminars and in-service courses for teachers on the effectiveness of specific activities for developing phonological awareness in children at the beginning stages of reading. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in social studies and two master's degrees from Syracuse University in elementary education and special education with a specialization in learning disabilities. Her publications have appeared in Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal. Darlene M. Tangel, Ph.D., is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Reading and Language Arts Department at Syracuse University. She has taught graduate courses in learning disabilities and in language disorders at Syracuse University and has been a reading specialist in the Oriskany Public Schools for more than 20 years, where she also serves as the Chair of Special Education and the Chair of Preschool Special Education. Her research interests include early reading acquisition and invented spelling, alternative reading curricula for children at risk for reading failure, and adult literacy. She has developed training materials for the American Federation of Teachers and has extensive experience conducting teacher training workshops. The focus of these workshops is translating research into practical application for classroom use. Her most recent publications have appeared in the Journal of Reading Behavior and Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal. Drs. Tangel and Blachman were awarded the Dina Feitelson Research Award by the International Reading Association for their research on invented spelling.

Hmmm, it's hard for me to give an honest, concrete rating to this because I've only been using it for two months... but for those interested, here's my input. I volunteer with first graders at a school where most students speak a language other than English at home. Their alphabet is a bit different, so vowel sounds vary. Some kids also have ADD/ADHD issues, so staying on subject can be difficult. For this reason, I like the book because the activities switch constantly so the students don't get bored. Some activities can be monotonous, or seem Really Basic, but these students who are challenged in phonetics still don't completely understand that (for example), the word "BIG" has THREE sounds: b, i, and g. They see the first two letters as one sound. So, there is a LOT of repetitiveness in separating the sounds, and we do this twice a week. I've been using this book and the material components for about 2 months, and it seems to be working pretty well. I am excited to see the progress as we keep moving forward, and if there are any changes, I'm happy to update.

When you are a parent, trying to help your child catch up on language development, this book is a wonderful tool for dispensing practical exercises. You do not have to have a Ph.D. or any special training to understand what to do as far as following the exercise instructions. Although the book was published for teachers or specialists, any parent can use this guide.

I really like this program for a kindergarten intervention. It is slow paced for those kids who need it. It is easy to follow and the materials in the back are easy to photocopy and use.

I am the parent of a 9 yo 3rd grader, recently diagnosed as dyslexic. Unable to get appropriate help from the school district, I have a tutor I am working with who suggested I use Road to the Code to help with phonemic awareness. It was very easy to follow and I was surprised how much my older child actually enjoyed the games. He recently finished the last lesson as has made significant progress with his short vowel sounds and letter recognition. He is also beginning to understand there is a logical "code" to attack words with. There is practically no skipping around a paragraph, looking for a "clue", like he was doing prior to this instruction. Now that he is on to more advanced curriculum, he sometimes asks to do some of the "Road to the Code" exercises for fun. I will definately use this program with my (non-dyslexic) kindergartener. The use of only the 8 most frequently used letters, the repetition, and variety of exercises are highly effective and simple. All materials are very low cost and easy to make. I wish they would have used this for him in kindergarten!!!!!

I am a reading interventionist and use this book with my kindergarten and first grade students are reading below grade level. I have found it effective and the students find it entertaining

Straight forward, easy to use. My first graders were very receptive to the 1:1 tasks from this program.

It is exactly what I needed to help my students become great readers!

Blachman knows her field. The book is full of lots of good ideas but needs some study and work on the part of the teacher. Well worth the effort to go the extra mile.

Whether you're traveling to Oregon, or just admire the state's tendency to root for good against evil, DO NOT PASS THIS BOOK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found this guy to be extremely helpful. It helped me decide which route would be more interesting. It was not so deep into the details of every little town. But it was very useful to pick out some highlights as I drove through. There are good maps. They weren't that detailed but very helpful. Also there are good suggestions for places to eat and places to sleep. By dividing up the state into sections that can be explored one trip at a time, it is useful to plan for future visits. Oregon is a big state so don't plan on seeing everything in this book in just a few trips.

FODOR'S OREGON is a great guide to Oregon. Granted, a large portion- at least one-quarter- is devoted to Portland and its environs, but that shouldn't surprise you, since it's the state's biggest city and has lots to offer. Besides, there's plenty in here about the Willamette Valley (including Corvallis, Salem, and Albany), plus a section on the city of Eugene, along with great coverage of southern and eastern Oregon. Overall, this book has plenty of information about sightseeing, dining, recreation, shopping, nightlife, and lodging, so if you're planning a trip to Oregon, or just interested in the Beaver State, DO NOT PASS THIS BOOK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I planned a trip to the PNW in May for my husband, his friend, and myself. We had a blast, and I essentially used this book for all of the planning. The hotel suggestions were fantastic. The RiverPlace in Portland was fantastic. It was a great location for walking around the cities, the hotel itself had a very cool vibe, and the staff was awesome. The Edgewater in Seattle wasn't quite as great, but we chose it for all the history associated with that hotel. Fodor's had given RiverPlace a star of approval, but withheld it from the review of the Edgewater. Again, the reviews were spot-on.The sight-seeing suggestions were also great. We headed out to the Oregon Coast and decided to visit Cannon Beach (Goonies, man). It was really nice to have reviews of each little seaside town. Multnomah Falls are not to be missed. The guidebook had great suggestions for Mount Rainier Nat'l Park as well...but I'm pretty sure the sequester screwed us out of being able to do as much as we'd hoped. We still had a good time though. In Washington, we drove out on the Olympic Peninsula, but we only had a day to spend. I really needed to narrow down to our top-choice spots, and it was perfect. We stopped at Lake Quinault for lunch, headed out to Ruby Beach, turned in for the Hoh rainforest, and just generally had a blast. (If you aren't pressed for time, I do recommend taking longer than a day for the Olympic Peninsula, it's huge, and we spent a ridiculous amount of time in the car).The only negative for me was the quality of the restaurant reviews. For example, the book suggested that while Ray's Boathouse was more about the view than the food, the food was still good. It wasn't. We had much better luck using Tripadvisor and Yelp for restaurants. Other than that, though, we were really pleased.

I'm fairly familiar with OR and I can see how most people traveling to places just want the basic info and if so, this book should fit the bill. For those looking for some more in depth stuff, forget this book. It's like most other travel books where the authors just "mailed it in".

I highly recommend this book to anyone visiting or traveling through Oregon. There are excellent maps, guides for nearly every region, every major site, City and town. Everything from food recommendation,Hikes, history, to sites you probably couldn't have found without a guide.

Fodor's Oregon was exactly what I needed to plan our trip to Portland next month. I love how it divides the state up into regions and then divides the city into neighborhoods. I always purchase a Fodor's guidebook for every vacation.

The book is perhaps too all encompassing. A confusing and poorly indexed look at a huge geographic and cultural expanse. I spent 30 minutes trying to find items specific to Vancouver Washington and turned up nothing excepted a confusing Portland section. The incredibly small number of reccomnendations for each 'area' ensures my vacation planning will take place online. The writing of the content is great. But it can't save the poor 'pull outs' with tips like: 'top reasons to go to the Pacific Northwest--'hip cities'. All in all disappointing.

It's a mix of old school and new school style writing with small print that drags on at times, but the text and short case studies are up to date. My other textbooks for the MBA are much more readable so I don't think this was the best choice for the class, but full of information and is organized fairly well. It has only black and white photos and a few color graphs to illustrate the points, so it is a bit too old school for me.

Read this for an MBA class. It was pretty enjoyable. The case studies were the most interesting.I think the Marketing Plan section was a bit overdone for my taste but it was nothing if not comprehensive.I would recommend it for a marketing student

Delivered as promised. Book is in pretty rough shape and looks like it got a little wet at one point. Also had a few loose pages but none were missing. For the price it’s well worth it

This was required reading for an MBA class. The necessary strategic marketing content is included. However, this text is not an overly effective delivery of the content. The authors are entirely too wordy. Every chapter includes droning examples of the covered subject I realize this is offered to help student receive some form of real-world insight. However, it feels like the authors just added a bunch of fluff to increase the size of the text. There is ample opportunity to use more bullet points that would make critical content stand out. I'm always searching for some extra bits of wisdom and advice with watercolors. I'm not a very good painter, but studying the masters is always good advice. There's always something to be learned - hopefully.William Lawrence has an effortless, unique style which I find both beautiful and instructive. His color choices alone are worthy of extensive study. But this book really is about light and shadow and choices that can be made when approaching a scene. But also, I really appreciate his overall philosophical approach to painting. He talks about how watercolor is often seen as pure technique, but painters need to consider what they're trying to SAY with their work, and that all paintings, even landscapes, can have emotional content conveyed through various choices made by the artist. Interesting stuff, and it gives me much more to think about than simply "is this wash too wet, or not we enough?", or whatever.The book is broken into chapters with different topics. I find Mr. Lawrences writing style to be entertaining and humorous but most importantly he is good at conveying what he is trying to teach - and there are plenty of visual examples to relate to what is being said in the text. There are full color pictures on every page - sometimes many on a page. Some are completed works, some are sketches, some are tonal value studies, etc. My favorite parts are where he shows a painting from start to finish in stages and explains his choices. There are even places where he shows two completely different approaches to a scene.Some art books are fun to read and nice to look at but don't offer much in the way of real instruction. This book is instructive as well as entertaining, and it has quickly become one of my favorite art books. Will it make you a better artist? It's certainly possible, but everyone's results vary. I only do watercolor and pencil sketching, and the information in this book can be applied to both.

What can I say? I wish I bought the last copy, no one else will see this book!!! Im kidding of course.No matter what I say in my review, there is people will never get it, like the one who give this book one star.There are several extremely important concepts presented in the book you probably seen in the other sources but Mr. Lawrence gave his most concise and simple presentation in one book.

I've always loved Skip Lawrence's work, so was thrilled when I found this great book! Very fresh approach, and I learned very much. My painting improved already just from the lessons I've learned in this book, to the point that it's been a bit of a breakthrough for me. I'm going to read it again and I know I'll pick up more. Thank you, Skip Lawrence!

Don't know if I'll every need another book on watercolor painting!I have not seen anything to even rival Skip Lawrence's teaching techniques. His explanations are easy to understand. Your paintings will improve rapidly. I know mine did.For the price this is the definitive book. Joseph Zbukvic is just as excellent a teacher, but you'll pay 10-20x what Skip's book is, and it will be used!

He is by far one of today's great artist. I borrowed this from an artist and knew I would be helping my professional art career by studying it especially love his found and lost edges. As an artist I have learned less is more and simple is hard. Leaving room for the viewer to get lost in the work and " participate emotionally" is where the magic begins and great art is made.

This gives a sophisticated method of seeing light and shadow for your painting. Understandable images for examples. Artist tends to be a bit more abstract in philosophy but is helpful for most genres.

This is a great book for watercolorists of all levels, both beginning and advanced. It is a shame that more books are not like this one - too frequently, I see books that are either watered down (even for beginners), or they are so style-specific that they teach you how to paint just like the artist (without leaving room for you to express your personal style). I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes watercolors, particularly people who like color or who prefer a looser yet still realistic approach (using loose brushstrokes but not abstractly).

A Refreshing technique for painting. Insightful, detailed and encouraging. Changed how I address dealing with a scene. A lightbulb went off when viewing the old masters and modern day artists. I only wish he had written other books.

I bought the kindle version of this book. I would definitely recommend the hardcover version. The first few chapters weren't that helpful but I found that as the book progressed it became more useful. It was a good resource for charting purposes (ie here are 10 abnormalities for this system and their general description). The pictures (and there were a lot of them) usually helped illustrate the abnormality. There were times that I felt the book went way to in-depth on certain aspects and other times where I felt it glossed over certain concepts or procedures that I wish it would have covered. All in all, I would give it 4/5 stars. Maybe not worth the $30 I paid for it, but if you could find a used copy for 10-20 it's worth the extra help.

A paramedic partner of mine recommended this series of books to me (he had the pathophysiology one), and after seeing his I immediately bought them all. I'm an EMT and don't actually have to know anything in this book, but I plan on medical school, so I read everything that'll give me a head start.The information is this book is presented with such incredible simplicity it puts every other textbook I've ever come across to shame. Providing visuals helps a lot, especially since some of them are utterly ridiculous and hilarious at 4AM on an ambulance. I learned more from this book than a lot of paramedics know about cardiology. I strongly recommend this one and all the others in the series to anyone at any level of healthcare.

Book is easy enough to follow - not as in depth as I would like it to have been and the "visual-ness" of it isn't too great either - sometimes there are just silly cartoons on the pages that don't have too much to do with the actual content. I bought this book as I'm starting out on a cardiac floor (RN) and for me it's just a basic overview with just OK visual aids.

Item arrived as described. Really enjoy reading this book. Very helpful in understanding the cardiovascular system. This book has awesome illustrations.

I have about books 10 from this series. I bought this one just to brush up on general cardiology knowledge when moving from the ICU to the Cardiac Cath Lab and it was quite helpful. I wouldn't have gotten through school without them. They are great for getting a solid overall view of a subject. Great for students.

I am a piano teacher and LOVE this series! Perfect for beginning 4-6 year olds. Children love following the stories of Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse and all their friends, and all the information is presented clearly and at a good pace. I recommend buying the little toys that come with the series, since they help children understand concepts such as high and low. This book, along with the Lesson and Workbook, is the perfect way to start off young musicians!

I bought this book to use with a 5-year-old piano student of mine. I had started her in the Alfred Basic Prep Level A, which is where I would normally start a kindergarten student. She was instantly taken with the characters. I used the lesson book and this workbook, and she started to make great progress.Sometimes "theory" can be tough for students to complete. This book has lots of color-by-note and other activities that don't seem like such tough work. (What kid doesn't enjoy coloring?) I think of this more like the Notespeller books from the Prep and Basic series, rather than the Theory books. At any rate, she didn't object to doing any of the activities, so that's good.

If I had realized that this book was only 8 pages I probably wouldn’t have purchased it, even for $3. I love a the Music for Little Mozart’s series. But with this one, I was disappointed. Also I received a damaged copy. The back had several creases.This experience hasn’t ruined the series for me, but it definitely left a negative impression.

This eight page booklet includes a Halloween-themed story about Beethoven Bear and a surprise from Professor Haydn Hippo. This booklet is a supplement to the purple (third) level of Music for Little Mozarts piano series for children."A Special Invitation" is written in C Position and includes simple chords for the left hand. A duet part for the teacher is included."Halloween Parade Song" is also written in C Position, but includes several flats (E and B). Again, a duet part is included for the teacher.The middle two pages of the booklet are exercises for the student to complete. One exercise involves matching intervals, and the other exercise is coloring notes on the staff.If your child is working through the Little Mozarts series, this is a fun add-on, but not an essential to completing the series. It's a good booklet for a one-off lesson, or just a fun break from the normal exercises. This would also work for a fall recital exercise.

In Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts, students follow their friends Mozarts Mouse and Beethoven Bear in exploration of musical sounds and concepts as they learn to play piano. The workbook has written and listening exercises to strengthen young students' aural skills. There is actually only one coloring assignment, which is to color Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear at the beginning of the book. This can be done for homework if instructors do not want to use up valuable lesson time coloring.The exercises in the workbook are fun and easy and correspond to exercises in the Little Mozarts lesson book. We just enrolled our 4 year old in private piano lessons and this is the book the teacher uses. The teacher already had Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse. What a great idea to keep little kids interested and help to have fun while learning! So far our daughter loves it.
