This book may be small, clocking in at only 42 pages, but don't let that be a deterant from buying it if you want to learn how to play the Dizi. It packs a lot of useful information for a beginner, such as proper posture, breathing, and fingering for playing, as well as teaching the basics of reading Jianpu, the Chinese music notation method used for Dizi pieces. It also teaches you how to choose a Dizi if you're buying from a store (I recommend the NICOSHINE ones if buying here on Amazon), and also how to clean your Dizi. In the back, it gives a small number of pieces for a beginner to practice to get their skills up. They are a mix between Chinese songs, and Western Classical music, with Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky all having famous pieces included.Ultimately, I am very satisfied with this little book, and eagerly await the "advanced skills" book that will come out. Hopefully by the time it does, I'll be at a high enough proficiency that I'll be able to use it right away!It is worth noting that there are a few formatting oddities that come from this being independently published, such as a couple of widowed lines that are immediately followed by pictures, making them hard to notice so it seems like the sentence ends abruptly in the middle. Also, the first page of the Preface starts is on the right hand side, as opposed to the left, as is traditional in publishing. But these are VERY minor quibbles that don't detract from the value of the product at all, and I heartily recommend this book!

Despite being a Western and Asian flute (mainly shinobue) player, I had a tough time absorbing some of the ideas put forth in this small book. But it did answer MOST of the questions I had, like the fingerings for the D-key and other keyed dizis. I had been exposed to the notation system (jianpu) but it took several readings to understand the solfeggi regarding the different keys (shinobue notation is similar but relates to open finger holes and also neatly coincides with standard solfege). This book is about the only title on the dizi in English that I am aware of but I haven't been able to locate book 2, as book 1 (this title) is a very recent work (2017) and may not yet exist. I appreciate that the author wrote something on this instrument in English and that the book is pretty comprehensive in scope (selecting a dizi, its care, notation, fingering charts, sample jianpu scores, and the like). The photos are better than expected and the binding should hold up well over time. Recommended for someone searching for info. Definitely very helpful, and something I refer to repeatedly.

Actually, my wife 'loves it'. It is an excellent little book with a lot of needed basic information about playing and caring for a Dizi. What she loves best about this book is that the music examples are in a Chinese notation system, which she can 'read' from playing a Guzheng, and not in Western notation.

There is actually a lot of good information in this book. However it is also a lot shorter than I expected. Now that I have it time will tell if the price is worth it. And since someone has asked, the book seems to be written for the key of D as that is specifically what the fingering chart says in the middle.

This book gave great insight into the history of the dizi and tips on how to play, but it was hard to understand exactly HOW to play. The fingering and note charts were hard to understand, especially for a novice like me. I think I’ll stick to videos as it’s easier to understand.

I have played several different instruments over the years, but strictly for my own enjoyment and not to perform for others. The hardest thing is to find decent introductory material about the instrument. This book is very informative, and it's just what i was looking for to learn about the dizi. If you have ever played a stringed instrument using tablature notation, you should be able to follow the instruction in this book pretty easily. It doesn't include many songs,but has a lot of useful information about the instrument. Can't beat the price.

I bought this book for my computer networking class which was run by one of the contributors of this book (George Polyzos). I've read all of chapters 1-6 and some parts of 7, and so far everything seems great. The algorithms are explained in detail, complete with visual material and online supplementary animations which can be accessed via the code in the book. The protocols are clearly explained with a visual representation of the formatting of each packet/segment/frame based the protocol. For me, it was a tiny bit tedious to read some parts and a bit frustrating trying to understand the more complex algorithms, but this was after having read 20+ pages straight beforehand. I never did any of the homework problems as we were given problem sets (possibly from one of the older editions). Overall though I'd give this book 4 stars for doing a great job of teaching general computer networking.

Over priced reprint of previous versions. Version 6 is almost the exact same book and it's much cheaper.

Most books in computer networks start bottom-up. This is good for those who might be beginners or those who are just looking to get a high level understanding of the field since it starts with the bigger picture and gets to the complicated lower level stuff later. Computer networks might feel dry to some, so starting with the upper level layers to the lower level ones later can more easily grab readers' attention. As a result they're more likely to stay for the entire ride and see how great computer networks are. It provides interesting end of chapter interviews! It also mentions the history and its influence on computer networks, which one might not take away from a computer networks class even though it is the basis of the internet that we know today. Great book!

I think it's worth starting off by saying that I'm not going to be too detail specific. I rented this as part of an introductory networking course. Unfortunately, the course and the book don't really work well together. Some aspects of networking are really detailed and thorough - especially when discussing how to build the network layer into software, but when trying to understand the concepts, this book misses pretty significantly. I found myself flipping through several pages looking for the meat of the topic. ("Is there a page missing? Why did it end there?") This could be a good reference book, however some of the core examples are too specific to certain transient solutions or technologies. I liked that the book was organized into the network layers, but there was still some cherry-picking of the details that should have had more content. This has been mentioned in another review as well.

Well written text. The homework problems are awkwardly written. Many of them are written as a string of questions, rather than being broken out in to part a, b, c, etc. It is easy to overlook part of the problem, or provide an incomplete answer.

College textbooks are generally difficult to read, but I've found this text to be rather easy to digest. The first two chapters were especially useful when it came to describing how the Internet works and how applications interface with the Internet. Highly recommended!

I have the International Edition and so can only speak for that. This is the recommended text for our Data Comm course and and I find that the book does a good job given the fact I have zero background in this area. The lecturer also used the slides prepared by the authors so everything tied in nicely. If you do get the book, I would recommend that you check out the student's resources at the publisher's website. There are useful animations that enhance understanding of the material and the one that sticks in my mind concerns routing, MAC addresses and IP addresses. One final note, if you wish to learn subnetting painlessly you will need more material. My advice is to download the 3Com paper referenced by the authors, I read it and it was like a light was switched on.

This has been one of my favorite books so far. I have order a lot of computer related books before this book is by far one of my favorite. The book is written is such a good way, so easy to understand and the provided examples make it even easier to comprehend this subject .

I found this book both heartbreaking and infuriating but not surprising. Heartbreaking because the author lost his son to problems with our medical system, infuriating because I've encountered similar problems and know it doesn't have to be that way. Being a scientist, the author used his background to try and unravel what happened. If you hate science you might not like this book but the author presents the science in a clear way so anyone can understand what he's trying to point out. It's a quick read in spite of the medical terminology and what i found especially useful was the amount of information that would help me understand the workings of the medical system and how to navigate it's pitfalls.The book comes down a hard on doctors, and I accept that reflects his experience, but I know lots of dctors are also doing good work andstruggling with the system too. Other than that negative I found this a good blueprint for how I would handle a serious illness in myself or may family. The auther has an agenda, but very few of us go through life without illness or injury and an agenda for patient safety was smething I could agree with.

The latest research indicates that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S. As a former RN, I could not put this book down! I learned a great deal about cardiology while reading a book that seemed like a compelling mystery novel. Many of my acquaintances think I am a good story-teller when I relay insights about what goes on behind the scenes in hospital settings. Dr. James validated much of what I have been preaching through the years about the need to take ownership of your own health and healthcare.Blind submission to authority is dangerous. And when blind obedience is given to those with medical "authority," the results can be deadly. Read this book to get ideas about how to navigate your way through our healthcare system. In short, if you or a loved one can't avoid going into a hospital or clinic, this book will give you tangible tools to help you get out ALIVE!

This book was massively disappointing, I don't know how it has so many positive reviews.First of all, the book is tiny. It's got 80 pages of large print, widely spaced text with a few basic diagrams thrown in. If you shrank the print size and spacing down to normal book sizes I think you'd be looking at about 40 pages, which is pretty paltry. I read it in about an hour.Second, the information presented is poorly laid out, frustratingly lacking in detail, and poorly edited. The book jumps around with little sense of flow, repeats itself, and uses Wikipedia as it's only reference.Third, despite promising to in the title, it doesn't actually teach you to make Moonshine, Whiskey, or Vodka!! It doesn't seem like too much to ask a book to actually deliver on the promises in it's title, but incredibly this book fails at that. This book gives sketchy "recipes" without any details on what to do with the ingredients for Moonshine, Whiskey, etc... but amazingly says right there on page 60: "In this book we don't really have time to cover everything...so we are going to make rum." Then the author says that if you want to actually learn all the steps for making something other than rum, you'll need to buy his other books!! What kind of shady bait and switch nonsense is this?Finally, as other reviewers have noted, the author has a bizzare habit of arguing nastily in the comments with folks who give his book low reviews. Had I read the reviews more thoroughly before purchasing this I would have seen the warnings for everything I've listed here, noted the strange way the author responds to constructive criticism, and gone elsewhere.There are other, much better books availible. I have read some other books on moonshining which were better than this one.1) Paraphased from book - The air lock device is half filled with water and it allows CO2 to escape without letting oxygen in. The yeast is happily eating the sugar and making new yeast but needs oxygen to do that.My response: Keep oxygen out but the yeast needs it. So which is it, In or out?2) It told what to put into the thump keg but not how much to put. I had to google to find out you never fill it over half full because it will puke it out.3) Some of the recipes sucked. I have never seen ones that required 3 pounds of sugar to 1 gallon of water. The rule of thumb is 1 pound of sugar to 1 gallon of water.

87 pages of the barest basics. How it has received all of the high reviews is beyond me. A lot of BS and just the minume of real workable knowledge.

A very well written and educational book for anyone curious about the process of making alcohol,it covers everything from how to make stills to different mash recipes

Jeff King explains a lot of what's going on in distilling. Yes it is for the beginner or someone who wants to understand what goes on in the making of spirits.

The book is easy to read and provides good explanations on how to distill alcohol. Particularly, liked the explanations on bourbon, scotch, and gin.

And Jeff has a wacky sense of humor that is evidenced in his writing.( Could it be from too much sampling of the product?) Great information that does show how easy it is to make your own sippin' whiskey.

When my husband became interested in the art of distilling, the worry, problem solving, and occasional mash making was left to me. This is a great book if you are looking for the basics of distilling. It is concise and well written. It allayed my fears, gave me enough information to be obnoxious, and provides some easy to follow mash recipes. When I purchased the paperback edition, I was alerted that a free kindle edition was thrown in as a bonus.

Extras is the unexpected final book in the Uglies series, following what was originally touted as a trilogy. The series is set in a dystopian future in which the ideas of beauty and conformity are the central ideals of the society. This book takes place a few years after Tally's story ended and centers on Aya Fuse. While conformity is less of a "thing" than it once was, beauty still remains as a measure of worth. But is apparently no longer enough to be beautiful OR to be unique. In Aya's city, being famous was the primary goal. The more famous you are, the higher your "face rank" is and that rank is the currency upon which her society is based.There are pretty specific cliques within her fame-obsessed world. There are the tech heads, those that are obsessed with the newest technology. There are also the surge monkeys, those who are obsessed with the newest and weirdest plastic surgery trends in their quest for physical attractiveness. And then there are the kickers, those obsessed with tracking down the latest story, the latest gossip, the latest bit of news. These are posted on feeds, techy versions of our blogs. Those whose face ranks are at the low end are the extras, the climbers who are obsessed with raising their ranks. Aya is an extra with a face rank so low that no one knows who she is. And she is obsessed with changing that. When she stumbles upon a mysterious group of girls, it changes everything for her. Most of the book focuses on Aya and her friends and they are all important to the story. But we also see Tally and her crew again, brought into the story at important moments. There are a ton of twists and turns in the plot, and quite a few surprises.In many ways, this is a timely book for this day and age. It confronts the ideas of beauty and fame both, and turns it on edge in an extreme way that makes you think. There are also themes of ethics and morality that present themselves in interesting, even if subtle, ways.There is no question that I loved this series and the thoughts it provoked. But I can't help but wish that perhaps it took all of these themes just a bit further. Like any good dystopian story, the author criticizes current society and focuses on aspects of it that are disturbing in their potential for disaster. He took those things to extreme levels and based the world of his books on those aspects. Beauty, conformity, fame... all of these things have the potential for disaster. And all of these things are questioned. But in the end, Tally still becomes Pretty and Aya still becomes famous. True, as characters they have questioned those things and they are aware of the darker side, but they still became the very things that are at the center of controversy. While both of these girls rebelled against the system, they both benefitted from it and I am not sure that was the intended message. Of course, I do tend to over think things!My Recommendation: This is an well-written series with some important issues as the focus. It is engaging and thought-provoking and a fantastic reading experience.

My favorite thing about dystopian fiction is their ability to give me a different perspective on our world, culture, and society. Dystopian novels push me to really consider the world that we live in and see a little bit of our reality in the dystopian world, to see the potential for what our world could become. Uglies is one of those novels... one that made me really think about some fundamental issues that are present in our own culture.Every dystopian world is a the result of a utopian effort to eliminate those things considered to be detrimental to society. For the world of Uglies, that is nonconformity and extremes. Set about three hundered years in the future, the world is otherworldly high-tech and the government provides everything to its people, even the extreme cosmetic surgery that is a major part of it's culture. At 16, each person receives cosmetic surgery that transforms them from an "ugly" to a "pretty." Prior to surgery, each person can choose what their future self will look like within the governmentally mandated standards of beauty. The lines between ugly and pretty are not just visual, but physical as well. Once transformed, new pretties cross the river to live in beautiful condominiums where, for the time being, their only job is to be beautiful and to have fun. Later, they will have other operations in conjunctiuon with the passage of time. Eventually they will have surgery to turn them into "Middle Pretties," those who are adults with jobs. And later they move on to become "Crumblies," our senior citizens.Tally Youngblood is the protagonist, about to turn 16 and looking forward toi her operation. Her best friend Peris has already had his operation and she is feeling the strain that comes between Pretties and Uglies. Shortly before she has her operation, she meets Shay, another Ugly. They become fast friends, hoverboarding and pulling the pranks that are a part of Ugly tradition. Shay is different from anyone she has ever known, balking against the surgery. Tally ignores that, but is forced to deal with it when Shay runs away just before their shared birthday. When she goes, she leaves Tally a note with cryptic directions that she doesn't initially understand. On the morning of her surgery, Tally is taken instead to Special Circumstances... a paramilitary division of the government that enforces the rules. There she is given an ulitmatum to give up Shay or never get her surgery to become a Pretty. This is the motivation behind the plot of the novel as Tally discovers things about herself, about her friends, about the world, and about her own feelings.This is a character-driven novel with important themes to consider. The concept of identity is a big part of the storyline. The government has created and mandated these surgeries in order to create conformity. Extreme individuality is considered to be a disruptive aspect of past societies, creating a standard of appearance that even removes racial markers. Beauty is dictated by those standards, a nod to the image-obsessed society that we now live in. But beauty almost loses its meaning among the Pretties, when everyone is beautiful. Uglies think of themselves as almost temporary, fUlawed. After all, they will be "fixed" when they turn 16. Even the personalities and personal dynamics change when they move from Ugly to Pretty, underlying the idea that we are defined by our appearance.The characters are well-developed and easily relatable in different ways. Because of the wide range of characters along the Ugly-Pretty spectrum, there were lots of perspectives and thoughts about the world. Some of the characters made you really think about the choices you might make for yiourself if in their position. There are undoubtedly things that are tempting about the Pretty part of society, but at the same time, the implications are frightening. And there are just as many things that are tempting about remaining Ugly (our own reality), as well as the sacrificesMy Recommendation: This is a fantastic example of dystopian literature, a world with both utopian and dystopian elements. This book is quite brilliant, and I would recommend this before Leviathan to most people that would want to get to know Hobbes' writing. It's a "lighter" text all over as far as I'm concerned, and it still gets most of it's points across in a great manner. The two books are also very similar, and for me, having read Leviathan beforehand, this was much of the same, only a little easier to read, as the translater has removed the capitalization etc that made the version I read of Leviathan a little archaic.Think what you want of Hobbes suggestions, I can fully understand why many shrink from his authoritative prescriptions, but read him nevertheless, because the foundations of his writing is incredibly fascinating and fun to read, and that part (About human nature etc.) should be interesting regardless of political views, contrary to his politics.

But the book is at least as much directed towards the readers of O'Brian's novels as to viewers of the film (and more so, I would argue), and it should be equally enticing for those simply interested in that historical era. To be sure, Lavery's "Nelson's Navy" is an excellent reference book that contains far more detailed information than the present work, but "Jack Aubrey's Commands" is written in a more approachable style for the general reader, with a text that is meant to be read as a continuous whole, rather than as a collection of details and essays. Its particular strength lies in the numerous and lengthy quotes taken from contemporary sources, making the narrative more vivid and easy to relate to a living world long vanished. In this regard, "Jack Aubrey's Commands" serves as a companion to Lavery's own "Nelson's Navy" as well as to the novels of Patrick O'Brian.Someone recently asked me whether it was better to buy "Jack Aubrey's Commands" or Richard O'Neill's recent "Patrick O'Brian's Navy: Jack Aubrey's World". Putting the obvious answer of "Buy both of them!" aside (and assuming that the reader already has Lavery's "Nelson's Navy" or feels that this earlier work is as yet too formidable to approach), then my recommendation would depend on the reader's personal preferences. Both volumes contain a good detail of information about the Royal Navy of Jack Aubrey's era. O'Neill's book is especially strong in the area of excellent period illustrations, Lavery's in the direction of narrative strength. The first is perhaps best for repeated browsing, the latter for a straightforward read.

This book covers a large area rather thinly. It is saved from "coffee table" status by some penetrating insights into such things at shipbuiding methods, or the composition of the Admiralty administration. It left me with the need to follow up many subjects, and I count that a plus for this type of book. I was a little disappointed that there was so little nexus between the sections of the book, and O'Brian's stories. One of the joys of O'Brian's work is that it seems closely related to fact, and I'd hoped for the little tingle of pleasure when the fact and the fiction are joined together.on a very minor point, it seems to me that the cover illustration shows a ship whose sails are not properly set...some are on starboard, and some on port tack. If I'm wrong, someone please show me my blunder.

The 2 people I bought this for just love it. They have all of the Jack Aubrey books and both music CD's (based on the books), plus other relevant books. They were both happy to add this book to round out their understanding of the series..

A nice gathering of information for those of us who aren't historians of the Napoleonic era.

Deserves its place in the spin offs from Patrick O'Brian's sagas

The book is quite well researched and comprehensive. It covers the subject of the Jack Aubrey Royal Navy very thoroughly and is very readable. Could use some more detailed and informative drawings in the sections describing the details of ship design and rigging, however.

Chosen because my husband has read the Jack Aubrey books 3 times, and this is all the research one could wish for and all in one book. Brian Lavery has done a spectacular job.
