When the Union blockade of all ports in the South stopped supplies from reaching the Confederate Army, Horace L. Hunley decided to create a submarine that would be able to sneak up on enemy ships and blow them up. After many years of trial and error, the H. L. Hunley actually succeeded in sinking the USS Housatonic in February of 1864. But the submarine never returned to port, and her crew perished in the Charleston Harbor. This is a finely crafted account of the Hunley from its inception to the modern archaeological quest to exhume her from the water. It is divided into chronological chapters complete with pictures, maps, and primary sources. Half of the book discusses the construction and design of the submarine, in addition to its practice runs and its first and only mission. The second half consists of the process of locating and excavating the Hunley, as well as piecing together the puzzle of exactly what happened on that fateful night in 1864. Secrets Of A Civil War Submarine, by Sally Walker, provides a nice, quick overview of the Hunley's history, recovery, excavation, and conservation. Targeting the late grade-school reader, the book is written in the style of and at a similar level to a National Geographic article. Any reader will enjoy it and come away with a good understanding of the Hunley project. There are a few detail mistakes, such as in an explanation of neutral buoyancy, but the main point is always delivered successfully by the text. I've been studying material on the Hunley since 2000, but I found several important bits of information I haven't seen elsewhere. The explanation of archaeological techniques as applied in the Hunley excavation is the best I've read. The book is nicely illustrated, although most of the photos have been previously published, and the interpretive drawings contain some fairly large inaccuracies. Overall, I'm happy to have this in my collection of books about the Hunley and I'm glad to recommend it.

Not being a history buff I must admit (to my shame) I had never heard of the Hunley before my husband and I paid a visit to the museum where it is now located. I didn't want to pay the prices for the books at the gift shop so when I got home I looked for an inexpensive book that would give me some of the history and had most of the pictures of what I had seen. This is exactly what I was looking for. I found the reading interesting without being overwhelming. The pictures were also exactly what I was looking for to remind me of what turned out to be an extremely interesting chapter in American history.

Despite most people's fascination with land battles there was a war at sea. This book does a great job of opening a window that most people never thought of looking through.

After seeing the Hunley at Charleston SC, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. How those sailors crammed themselves in this unproven submersiblemachine of the Civil War is almost unbelievable. It killed more Confederates than it did the Union enemies!

A fantastic pictorial review of the rediscovery of the Hunley's resting place outside Charleston, it's fascinating recovery and subsequent archeological investigation. It also introduces the reader to the men who manned her on her fateful first and last mission against a Federal vessel blockading Confederate supplies entering the harbor. A great introduction to this interesting if little known aspect of the war between the states.

The story of the Hunley is a well told account of eight men with extradardonary courage who gave their lives for their cause.

Primo Levi, similar to Elie Wiesel, is so closely associated in my mind with The Holocaust, and Holocaust literature, that I was surprised to find that in THE PERIODIC TABLE, Levi rarely touches on it directly. And yet, as a memoir of his life as a chemist both before and after Auschwitz, the entire book is freighted with the knowledge of his time in the camps; similar, perhaps, to a biography of a man born with a serious birth defect, and how this background knowledge forces the reader to reevaluate the simple tasks of living that he'd previously taken for granted. Simultaneously, as a part of Levi's entire oeuvre, I also had the feeling that THE PERIODIC TABLE was a statement, an affirmation by Levi, who HAD become associated so closely with The Holocaust, saying, in effect, `I am not Auschwitz. I am a chemist.'Regardless, as others have noted, THE PERIODIC TABLE is a collection of stories--some true and some fiction, and each tied to one of the elements of the Periodic Table by some detail in the story. For instance, the first chapter, titled `Argon', contains a brief explanation of the group of gases that Argon belongs to--The Noble Gases:"There are the so-called inert gases...They bear curious Greek names of erudite derivation which mean `the New,' `the Hidden,' `the Inactive,' and `the Alien.' They are indeed so inert, so satisfied with their condition, that they do not interfere in any chemical reaction, do not combine with any other element, and for precisely this reason have gone undetected for centuries."Levi then goes on to interweave anecdotes about the Jewish community he knew growing up as a child in Italy, and one quickly picks up on the association between the Noble gases and this community. Most of the rest of the stories are not quite so allegorically tied to the elemental heading, though there always remains a hint of it. The early chapters I thought were dense and philosophical, which surprised me for some reason, though I either grew accustomed to Levi's style, or the stories became more straightforward as the book went on. I also found that after the initial pages, I thought the book captivating--which, again, given the episodic nature of the stories, was surprising. The long and the short of it is that, although I expected to enjoy the book, I enjoyed it for none of the reasons I suspected I would.It is not an easy book to categorize. Part fiction, part memoir; little direct mention of The Holocaust, and yet the book is entirely infused with it--I hesitate to call it unique, but I do think it stands apart. A very intriguing book.

What can a little Midwest housewife write about Primo Levi? These autobiographical chapters, each bearing the name of a chemical element as a title, and interspersed with short stories, a written with a deft yet delicate touch, referring to but not dwelling on the horror Levi's experience as an inmate of Auschwitz. Touching in a completely unsentimental way, beautiful, really.

Periodic table' is a chemist's blueprint of the fascinating elements that make up our world. It was insightful to read this biographical account by Primo Levi, a Jewish chemist in Auschwitz, both during and thankfully after Nazi atrocity. True to its name, the focus is on his adventures with chemistry - chemistry as a man's passion, as well as a means to sustain in a big bad world. Reading about chapters on different elements definitely piqued this organic chemist's interest. It was a down memory lane on archaic inorganic analysis from B.Sc. days. Admittedly decades back during the author's time, exposure awareness and safety concerns were near non-existant and some of Levi's trysts were jaw-dropping to me as a modern practitioner (much akin to walking a tightrope without safety net!). Life of a chemist in a very difficult historical period, synthesized out of various "element"al chapters - awesome!

It is instead a stirring memoir of an Italian Jew ,a chemist, who survived the years of Italian Fascism and the subsequent Nazi occupation, by the the force of his creativity and sensitivity to the harrowing events that befell him. The memoir feels like a set of short stories. Each chapter is named for a chemical element.The use of this device was incredibly creative. In one case, Chapter 2 Hydrogen, the author recounts his teenage adventure with a friend, that generated hydrogen from water. In another chapter, Iron, the author describes his best friend and their mountain adventures. The friend seemed to have the qualities of Iron. Just as the elements have personalities- that is, they share, steal or give up electrons to form bonds with other elements, people also have personalities- resilient, affiliative, inert- and Dr. Levi draws parallels between these chemical and human personalities.And what stories he has to tell. A romance that might have been. Surviving a death camp by making flints for cigarette lighters. Uncovering a Nazi in a postwar business relationship. 3 amazing chapters which are wholly works of fantasy- not biography at all. The last chapter is a chemical story, the story of one element without a human subtext, the most important element to life on earth.The book is a tour de force, and a tribute to the fascination of scientific inquiry and experiment.

Primo Levi was a clever young man and he wanted you to know that. His use of members of the Periodic Table as a device to illuminate his characters is sometimes an overreach, sometimes silly and sometimes well honed. That he had intense experiences and met many people worthy of a good story, is not in dispute. As a writer and as a character in his own stories, he made me wish I'd known him as a friend.

About the Author

Alex Bennett has two doctoral degrees in Japanese literature and history from Kyoto University and the University of Canterbury (NZ). He is a professor in Japanese history, martial arts and Budo theory at Kansai University. He is Vice President of the International Naginata Federation, International Committee Member of the All Japan Kendo Federation, Director of the Japanese Academy of Budo, and he is Head Coach of the NZ Kendo national team. He co-founded and publishes Kendo World, the first English-language journal dedicated to Kendo. He holds black belts in several martial arts—Kendo Kyoshi 7-dan, Iaido 5-dan and Naginata 5-dan. This is a fact based historical account of his life and teachings as a martial artist and is the best translation of "The Book of Five Rings," it clearly explains in full historical context, every obscure reference and history behind the book. Furthermore this is the most accurate translation I have read to date, even going so far to explain the different readings of each word, and what Musashi was implying with each statement.Furthermore, this book not only included Go-Rin-No-Sho, but also Musashi's other lesser known works. Heiodokyo, Heiho Kakitsuke, Heiho Sanjugo-Kajo, Goho no Tachi no Michi, Dokkodo, Kokura-hibun.Bennett sensei himself is a master swordsman who not only is a 7dan in kendo, but also the international Naginata-do representative, and co-founder of Kendo-World. Furthermore he holds 2 PHD's and teaches the History of Budo at Kansai University. His credentials in the Japanese swordsmanship community are amazing. This unique perspective clarifies many of the esoteric aspects that most other translations of these works are missing.

As a kendo practitioner I've score translations of the go Rin no sho for clues that can improve my own concept of swordsmanship. Alex Bennett's new translation is the best by far. This is the case for several reasons:* It is the first translation based on a reconstruction of the original text (the original was destroyed and all we have are copies with their attendant scribal errors)* It is the first translation undertaken by someone not only fluent in Japanese but in swordsmanship. As such it captures elements that are hard to understand in other translations by people deficient in one of these areas* The translations are clear and approachable* The book contains several previously untranslated works by Musashi from earlier in his life allowing the reader to see how Musashi's own ideas on swordsmanship and combat strategy evolved throughout his life.

This is a great translation of the Book of Five Rings. I love the introduction and found it very fascinating. The translation was easy to read and had an air about it that felt more precise to Japanese sword budo than any other translation I have and have read. I highly recommend it over the well known other translations.

Thorough translation that manages to maintain a literary flow and is of interest to both the serious martial arts student as well as the general public.

The Complete Musashi: The Book of Five Rings and Other WorksI stumbled upon this translation when I was looking up the author Alex Bennett after reading an article he wrote about Bokuden.Having an interest in Musashi and having read several translations of Go-Rin-No-Sho I was excited to see another translation was coming out.Translating is often more interpreting than literally translating word for word, especially with an ambiguous language like Japanese. The interpretation is often influenced by the translators own background and experiences. That’s one of the reasons I like to read several translations by different authors for books like this.This translation is done by someone who is fluent in Japanese as well as having a background in swordsmanship.Also this is a translation of the original manuscript rather than one of the copies so this is saying what Musashi intended to.The book starts with a short biography of Musashi, separating fact from myth. This was quite interesting to read having read the novel by Eji Yoshikawa and the graphic novel series Vagabond as well having watched the movies with Mifune and the later TV series.The next part is the book of five rings. The saying goes that you never step into the same water twice. The book of five rings is a classic that gives new insights every time you read it. As this translation is from the original and some parts are slightly different compared to other translations it gave me some new insights.The book of five rings is followed by a couple of other works by Musashi. This allows us to see how Musashi’s ideas ripened over the years. What I liked is how Alex Bennett numbered every article within the different works which made it was easy to cross-reference and compare a certain article from a certain work/scroll with a similar article from an earlier or later work. This again allows for a better understanding of what Musashi meant. Reading the book I felt tempted to look at the notes at the bottom of the page which distracted me at times but it’s far better than having to go to the back to look up notes as they were very relevant explaining the choice of translation for certain characters.The book certainly does its title: ‘The complete Musashi’ justice. I recommend it to everyone interested in Musashi, Japanese strategy and Japanese martial arts. Whether you are new to Musashi’s Go-Rin-No-Sho or have read the many other translations and the interpretations for several fields, you should have this book on your shelf.

I am very pleased with this book and this format of books. Robson has written others, including one on the Peugeot 205 T16, which I also have. This isn't for the casual reader but the person who really enjoys rallying and reading about the great cars in this motor sport. This has just the right amount of text, ample photos that complement the text and is not so voluminous as to be a drag to read. Incidentally, I also use these books as reference books to build models of these same cars.

This an amazing book. I love the Impreza. This book covers everything about Subaru World Rally car!!! It starts in 1992 and explains in great detail about the development of this astonishing car!! The book is beautifully written. If you love Subaru, like me, you need it!! It was delivered very quickly and in perfect shape!!

I recommend this book to anyone obsessed/fascinated with rallying who wants to absorb as much information as possible about one the sport's greatest cars. The Lancia Stratos was the first purpose-built rally car, a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, fiberglass-bodied, Ferrari V6-powered monster that drew huge crowds wherever it raced.The author of this book, Graham Robson, is one of the foremost authorities on the World Rally Championship, and he provides plenty of information about the Stratos' genesis, development, specifications, and competition history. Loaded with photos and statistics, this book is a must for all Stratos fans.I also highly recommend the other books in Veloce's Rally Giants series, including Austin-Healey 100-6 and 3000; Ford Escort Mk I, and Subaru Impreza, all written by Robson, all of the same quality and format.

First off, I loved this book and recommend it highly. It is a complete page-turner. Loved the characters. Loved the setting. Loved the story.But I do have a confession to make. I'm that guy who had no idea that Bonaire, or Saba, or most of the islands even referenced in this book, existed. I mean, I know where Venezuela is, but alas, geography was never my strong suit. And as far as scuba diving is concerned, I did it once in Hawaii, but that was a long time ago and I didn't see a whole lot.But NOW?! Sign me up for a scuba vacation to the Caribbean baby! The descriptions were so vivid and inviting I felt like I was there! Not that the descriptions themselves are important, but it does illustrate how fully immersed you become in the author's world. And the character's are likewise fully brought to life. I loved the characters, especially Boone. (In my next life I'm going to be him: just a dude who finds something he loves to do - and does it.) I thought the villains particularly believable, which is important in a story like this. And Ana Munoz is the gift that keeps on giving... you should read this book if only to meet her, she is worth the price of admission, believe me. (And she is, alas, not even a main character.)I don't want to give anything away but I will tell you I found the twists and turns in the plot kept me guessing. I'm the guy who usually sees stuff coming a mile away, but I am happy to say that I was genuinely surprised, and can honestly tell youI did not see where it was going - in the most satisfactory way. Well done sir.I guess the best compliment I can give this book is that I finished it in an afternoon. I picked it up and couldn't put it down.Oh, and can I just make one request? Hurry up with the sequel - and Ana Munoz needs her own series. Please.

Deep Shadow by Nick Sullivan is a sexy, espionage filled romp through the waters of the Caribbean and the islands upon it. Like the fishing vessels that become the travel of our heroes, this book will hook you and keep you hooked throughout. I was immediately drawn into the Clancy-esque storyline, but was equally turned on by the romance at the center. Props to this writer for giving us both a male and female heroine, and a romance that works within and amplifies the storyline. A delicious, sexy, action packed maritime adventure that will keep you turning the pages well into the night! Clear the writer knows this territory well, and loves it-- you will find yourself infused with the passion of his writing. I only wish I had been on the beach reading it, but he transported me there in spirit! **I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

While I am not a reviewer of any note, I am an avid reader of all things ‘adventure’. As such, just let me state that Mr. Sullivan’s novel fulfilled what I consider elemental in any good story: Plot construction, character development and pace. I was hooked from the outset and can only anticipate his next adventure in paradise. As an old sailor and diver who knows a bit about the Caribbean, I can only say to Wayne Stinnett, “thanks for the introduction”. It’s nice to have a “new friend”.

A fellow Rotarian Emailed me while I’m here on Bonaire to let me know about this book. We own a place on the Island and have for about eight years,and actually have been coming here for about 20 years. I really enjoyed reading about the places I’ve been going to for years and love the fact that it’s recently written. If you love Bonaire you’re gonna love this book! I will be sharing this with my many friends that call Bonaire their permanent home!

What a great read this first book in the series is -- I couldn't put the book down. The detail provided in describing the locale -- Bonaire and Venezuela -- and the antics of Boone (hero), Emily (heroine) and the baddies, not to mention the engaging storyline make this a must-read book. I look forward to the next in the series. I am glad Michael Reisig recommended this book.

I can't stand to fly without a decent book to read during the long boring airport waits and flights. So, I pulled this one down to the Kindle as insurance from boredom on my way to Statia and Saba for Sea & Learn and some great diving. I had no idea "Deep Shadow" would also take me to these beautiful places. Being a frequent visitor to these islands myself, I really enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the people and places I know well. In fact, I would not be surprised to find out I have meet Nick Sullivan at some point in my travels. I probably dived with him! Anyway, very well written book, great beach read, and I loved the sprinkling of historical and geographic facts. I will be pulling down the second book in the series now!

This is a terrific adventure that starts strong, and keeps a brisk pace throughout. The author's attention to detail is very strong in terms of location and scuba diving, yet not too technical to bog it down. This is a great set-up for a series featuring Boone, and Sullivan has the skills to keep it chugging along.This is the second book by Nick Sullivan that I've read, and while I was a fan of his goofy Zombie Bigfoot, this new novel shows a big evolution in style. Much more mature, with higher, real-world stakes...yet still room for fun. Recommended.

Just finished Deep Shadow an am waiting for my heart rate to simmer down. What an adventure! If you like exhilarating adventure with a pinch of humor you will love this book. Oh I hope Nick is a prolific writer.
