I love the way Joe Bruno writes about mobsters, conmen and swindlers. The reason why I enjoy his books is because of the way he seems to ferret out facts about his subject that no one else seems to do. I grew up in New York City and while I was aware of some of the characters he writes about I never knew their darkest secrets and Bruno through a great deal of research he shines his spotlight or in his case his word processor on little known but interesting facts about all of the subjects he writes about. I bought this book for my teenage daughter for Christmas because she had borrowed it from the school library and loved it.Once she was done re-reading it, I had a chance to read it and absolutely LOVED it. It's the story of a young woman who is an artist and mostly introverted who has moved to a new home in New York City. The magic of the story is not plot twists but how unbelievably honest the story and illustrations are. Just as Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine captures the beauty and sorrow of growing up, this book speaks the truth about being an artist in adolescence. What it feels like to try to find friends, to be a friend. to decide to be more than a friend... The urge to make art, to hide one's art, to risk sharing one's art... And it speaks to other forms of art than just visual arts as well...I'm not an artist, but I spent a lot of time looking at the illustrations because of how much they revealed about the characters and - to be honest - sometimes captured feelings that I've had in my own life. This novel is a beautiful work of art and would be an excellent read for anyone who has ever felt introverted or wanted to be any form of artist.

I bought this book for my 11 year old daughter and she absolutely loved this book. She is very into graphic novels. I felt writing this review should come from the one who actually read it. She said the book gets you hooked and it's a fast read. She also said she would recommend this book for other people to read.

My 11 year old daughter loved this so much that when she finished, she flipped back to the front of the book and started over.The pictures are all in gray-scale inside the book, which surprised me, but my daughter doesn't mind at all.

I have an almost 11 year old with anxiety disorder. She see's a therapist, and that has been awesome. But this book was inspiring and thought provoking for her. It helped support her own ability to connect what was going on inside her, and has begun more conversations on what she feels, her triggers, and what's happening in her head. She now has her own drawing book to help her deal with her anxiety and social difficulties. It was something we used to do when she was young, but she had let it go, and was opposed to picking it back up. This book reminded her that it was helpful. Thank you, Laura Lee Guledge. This book was a huge gift to our daughter. I will also add that the illustrations are amazing, and tell the story of what's going on inside Paige. Great for ALL girls!

Perfect, i highly recoomend this book. I read it b years ago amd bought it here for a great price. If you love frida, you will love her diary. Studying her photos in her journal gave me alot of information and perspectivw on her spiritual amd life experiences. I found frida at the lowest point of my life, bedbound and very sick. She gave me hope while identifying her pain thru her paintings. An absolure must. I finally did my frida art piece based on her paintings and journal.(Not 4 sale, it goes to charity. )

i do not feel this is a good translation of her diaries and i also feel that a lot of artistic license was taken by the author. i honestly don't feel this should have been made so available to the general public in the form that it takes. the translation from spanish to english, is at times, poor. And, the "interpretations" of what the artist "meant" when she said or wrote certain things takes great license and assumes that the author had a microscope into the brain of kahlo. She was a complex women who was in a lot of pain towards the end and this diary reflects that, as well as how much medication she was on. i feel that it's just an all around inappropriate and inconsiderate translation of her last works.

Absolutely loved this!! I got this for my best friends birthday because she loves Frida Kahlo! It is so good and I’m glad I got a copy for my self as well. Highly recommend this if your a fan of Frida or like art in general.

It was enlightening to read Frida's diary. In addition to being a brilliant painter, her writing is poetic. Free form wanderings, eulogies for departed friends, political views, intimate musings of her life are all in this most revealing diary. Doodles are in pen, crayons, ink blots are worked into her sketches. This poor woman endured over 35 surgeries all stemming from the excruciating injuries suffered in the tragic bus accident. Her frustration, anger and immense sadness is palpable in her entries.Half of the book is a replica of the original diary. The other half is a translation in English along with a critical interpretation. The English translation also in part-detective in a sense. Most important to Frida is Diego Rivera. For all his cruelty to and loving of Frida, she mirrors the dichotomy of their tempestuous lives together. No matter how much Diego hurt her, she defended him to herself and strongly believed that their souls were one. She also feels that Diego is a child sent to her, and she, the long suffering, loving mother.If you're interested in the art of Frida and Diego, the long physical suffering Frida endured and their long relationship, this diary is a must.It is exquisite.

The introduction was a beautiful glimpse into the beginning of a journey that "The Diary of Frida Kahlo" took me on. One of logic, passion, bits of pain, humor, love and the confusion of which art tries to help us cope with issues we find unbearable to ever comprehend. A daily read for me whether it be if I can only fit in a few minutes of my favorite parts of have the leisure of enjoying the whole body of the book. Love isn't a strong enough word for how much I enjoy it but will have to do, I love it a great deal. Recommend it to anyone looking to mix the beauty of images with the gorgeous mind of a poet as I find most of the journal entries of her's were.

This book -- I love this book. The translation is in the back and it's very easy to flip back and forth between her journal and the notes -- I just used some sticky notes to mark my places. And it's really lovely to read about her in her own words. If you're an artist or love art or politics or people who live passionately, you'd probably like this.

What an honor to read some of the private written and see the art in this journal. Her body of work is beautiful and startling. She was a great artist gone too soon.
