Review

At first glance, this book appears to be of the coffee-table genre. Colorful, almost glitzy, it features breathtaking illustrations on nearly every page by some of the most renowned photographers in Oregon: Charles Blakeslee, Larry Geddis and David M. Morris, to name a few. As I read further, though, it was evident the author had also done extensive research into the history, geology and demographics of the tri-county area in Central Oregon. At that point, I began to wonder why it had taken this long for someone to write such a contemporary overview of our rapidly growing region. -- Stephanie Swee, The Bulletin, Bend, Oregon, Scene, Friday, May 17, 1996, page 12At first glance, this book might seem indistinguishable from any number of other similar volumes: a good many color photographs in a slick, large-format, coffee table book. Certainly worth having, but not exactly a standout. But take a second look. Central Oregon is a standout in nearly every respect. To begin with, the photographs are masterful. The book has 91 of them, and everyone is effective. These are not calendar art -- they are fine examples of composition and style....Barnes hasn't written a typically lightweight travel volume. She has chosen instead to produce an informative work on the area designed for the average reader....This book is a treasure for the armchair traveler and for those who have no idea how different Central Oregon is from the Willamette Valley. Central Oregon: View from the Middle is a good deal more than a picture book or a pitch for tourism. It's an experience in and of itself. -- Dan Hays, The Statesman Journal, Sunday, September 22, 1996, C-1

Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Never Set Foot On and Never Will

From Booklist

For those who find it difficult to believe that there are still isolated, secluded, and uninhabited or sparsely populated pockets of land anchored firmly in the midst of the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Antarctic Oceans, this quietly beautiful and subtly evocative book is a must read. Firm in her conviction that atlases should take a much-deserved place in the literary pantheon and that there is “no more poetic book in the world,” her cartographic drawings are accompanied by compelling narratives, outlining the history, natural science, local lore, and legend of each of the 50 islands she visually and textually conjures up out of her impeccable research and vivid imaginings. An armchair traveler’s delight, this book will also beckon, challenge, and inspire intrepid explorers and exotically inclined vacationers. --Margaret Flanagan

"(a) cartographical gem" -The Wall Street Journal - Great New (Armchair) Travel Reads "An utterly exquisite object: atlas as Wunderkammer and bestiary, bound in black cloth and sea-blue card...makes a magnificent case for the atlas to be recognised as literature, worthy of its original name - theatrum orbis terrarum, "the theatre of the world". -Robert Macfarlane, The Guardian (UK) "This beautifully illustrated atlas reveals that cartography and the creative imagination have always intersected, spurred on by human wanderlust." -NPR's 2010 Favorites pick "'Paradise is an island. So is hell.' Or so says Judith Schalansky in the introduction to her charming, spooky and splendid Atlas of Remote Islands." -The New Yorker's Book Bench "...absolutely magical." -Conde Nast Traveler- CNTraveler.com "The first five times (or so) that I paged through the Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Never Set Foot On and Never Will, I fell deeply in love with the book... Each of author and artist Judith Schalansky's maps--hand-drawn in shades of gray, black, white, and brilliant orange on cadet blue paper--transported me to a, usually, remote island..." -NationalGeographic.com "... A testament to the transformative power of maps. Atlas of Remote Islands is a celebration of what can still be accomplished with imagination, paper and ink. Holding it, you feel as if you've stolen the composition book that dreamy girl in the back row of our high school English class is always scribbling into. You page through it and think, Oh, my God. She's a genius." -Anthony Doerr, TheMillions.com "That impossible-to-please friend, that cranky relative, that coffee table begging for something more interesting that last Sunday's New York Times Magazine- worry about them no more. Here is your holiday gift, your birthday present, your living room's conversation-igniter." -HeadButler.com "The most beautiful and powerful book I have ever seen like this is the Pennyroyal Caxton (King James) Bible, with haunting engravings by the genius Barry Moser. The second most beautiful and amazing book like this I have ever seen arrived, slim and stunning, on my desk days ago: Atlas of Remote Islands. For a child itching to see the world, for the child inside an aged and creaky vessel, for all of us who never stopped dreaming of faraway islands draped in amazing languages and wild stories and a wholly new angle of light, this is the perfect gift." -Brian Doyle, The Oregonian "... hand-drawn maps of the remote islands and the fascinating stories that go alongside are utterly captivating..." -The South Mississippi Sun Herald "... one of those books that you can easily spend a day dreamily paging through. Beautiful stories are crafted from these remote islands histories, giving character to the pieces of land that could be easily overlooked or forgotten. You want this book." -World's Best Ever blog www.theworldsbestever.com "Is it possible to confuse a romance novel for an atlas?... I opened the pages to maps that looked as though they were painted in the Middle Ages. They are clear, artistic, and true to scale. I approached the text and continued my love affair." -GoNomad.com "Judith Schalansky's pseudo-tome- the product of a lifetime of studying maps, typography, art and design- is a charming romp through 50 of the most remote islands in the world. But this book is about so much more than maps... it's beautiful...it's charming, fanciful and is part of a near-perfect construction of a book that captures the romance of travel... This is a great coffee table book, perfect for history buffs, dreamers of anyone who sticks pins in their maps and obsessively uses "GTrot" on Facebook." -LostGirlsWorld.com "Gorgeously illustrated and with color maps throughout... Judith Schalansky lures us onto fifty remote islands... and proves that the most adventurous journeys still take place in the mind, with one finger pointing at a map." -Publishing Perspectives "When we dream of escaping from frantic modern lives into another more perfect kind of existence, the image of an island often comes to mind, a refuge where time slows down, the living is easy and we can at last find inner peace. It's a fantasy, practically a Jungian archetype now... Schalansky's book won a prize in Germany as the most beautiful book of the year. It deserves to win several more. Atlas of Remote Islands is a stunningly accomplished piece of work, as well as being a rare feat of total authorship." -Rick Poyner at the Observer's Room blog "The first five times (or so) that I paged through the Atlas of Remote Islands, I fell deeply in love with the book. Each of author and artist Judith Schalansky's maps transported me." -Intelligent Travel blog "Last night I devoured the most beautiful book... It's wonderful: it's like Borges' eccentric encyclopedias. It is, in a word, great." -Caustic Cover Critic blog "Judith Schalansky's Atlas of Remote Islands perfectly merges the experiences of reading Calvino's Invisible Cities and pouring over an atlas as age eight. I really can't imagine recommending a book more highly." -Harry Schwartz Eats The World blog "...what has to be the coolest book released all year. Totally amazing." -Survival of the Book blog "Atlas of Remote Islands is a book that opens like a trunk of dusty letters in an attic- full of the promise of the unknown, and the discovery of small delights. There is poetry in the book's simplicity, and a reminder of the beauty of print." -emagazine.com "If you ever wonder what kind of place 'real' books will have in an increasingly electronic world, the Atlas of Remote Islands is the perfect example of the power wielded by a physical artifact. This book is a rare gem. It's like your favourite children's fantasy book come to life... it's a little like Lost, and it is like traveling to the moon." -Writer's Pet blog "It's a delight... a weird and wonderful assortment." -Lonely Planet blog "With hand drawn detailed topographic maps and intricate local histories, each of the islands comes alive through stories about marooned slaves, lonely scientists, lost explorers, mutinous sailors, confused lighthouse keepers, and forgotten castaways." -Perceptive Travel blog "An armchair traveler's delight." -The Philadelphia Inquirer

The book itself is very well written and the accompanying maps for each island are very helpful in following the story line. There are three takeaways from this book. First, I have studied maps and charts for a long time, and this book makes you focus on parts of the oceans that may not have drawn sufficient attention before. In my case, that would be the Southern Hemisphere. The book forces you to look at the remoteness of these places and the miracle that they were even discovered in a time before satellites. Second, the vignettes put forth for each island gives a historical perspective. Many of the stories are within the last 200 years, however, it feels like a different millennium because of the remoteness of the places. Third, the distances and timelines at the top of each page, easy to ignore at the start become more of a revelation as time goes on. I would not put this on on the top of my read pile, but for a good one day read, this is a worthy choice.

The first thing that struck me about Judith Schlansky's Atlas of Remote Islands was its physical beauty, a study in orange and blue that is a lot more appealing than it sounds. The type font is a joy to look at and to read, but really I expected no less from the author and designer of [Fraktur Mon Amour]. Each map of the 50 islands in the book is featured on its own individual page surrounded by a sea of blue as if it's the only place left in the world. In her preface she introduces her love of maps and their infinite possibilities, particularly islands. Schlansky has a mesmerizing way of writing that made me almost want to take off for the great unknown, however as she notes an island can be paradise and hell. In writing about each of these fifty islands she manages to make a study of the strengths and weaknesses of the human character. From hermits in artic regions, to self-made empresses, from islands where inhabitants depart on suicidal treks to maintain the ecological balance of their home, to one where the inhabitants refuse to leave even though their home is sinking beneath the waves. I read this book on a snowbound day with a pot of tea beside me. Highly recommended

A well written book that had to of been difficult to research. It gets difficult to use your imagination as you get older, but this book certainly had me daydreaming about exotic locations. I'm glad I purchased it. My 5 yr. Old son enjoys the illustrations.

I chose the book based on content and it delivers on that level. I wanted something engaging that I could read in small doses and sort of mentally travel somewhere far.It gets 5 stars though b/c it does this in such a cool way. The distances-to-stuff-you-know really add scale to the stories, the inside of the cover w/ world map could easily be missed but relates directly to the content... it's not just a generic world map.Plus, the artistry and layout have a very purposeful feel... very much like the unique visual details of a Wes Anderson movie. It's clearly deliberate and works well to deliver a consistently engaging book that shows as well as it reads.

This book basically describes random islands that are for the most part relatively obscure. The descriptions focus largely on the geography and topography of the islands, and offer some tongue-in-cheek hints at what life might be like there for the wayward traveler. It's a fun book for anyone who wasted hours of their youth (or adulthood) staring at maps and imagining what might be on those little dots and flecks which sit in the midst of oceans with no description and often no unique name. The writing is lighthearted yet informative, and a lot of fun to read.

this is probably the most unique book I have on the shelf. It is just plain fun to actually read about and view the drawings and notes on small remote islands that exist on this planet. Some are familiar (Iwo Jima for instance) but most are just in the 'middle of nowhere' with no real history other than the small tidbits revealed by the author. The feel of this hard cover book and it's simplicity make it special. If you're like me and dream of wandering the remote corners of this earth, this will entertain and inspire you.

If you love islands and the further from civilazation the better, you will find this an interesting read. Although there is a map you have to go back and forth to see where the islands are when you get to the pages on a specific island and there are no photographs only drawings. Some of the islands reviewed are uninhabited or uninhabitable, some have from a few up to several several thousand people. I have no idea how the islands reviewed were chosen as they don't have much in commom other than that they are remote. Of course there are many islands not in the book that are just as remote so your guess is as good as mine.

It is a interesting book and the hardcover version is pretty. The writing by itself is limited and in some of the islands dont provide much more than what you could get from the wikipedia. This is not to say that both have the same content but that the particulars are somewhat uninspired.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Eliza's parents have no understanding of her online life, from her friendships to the scope of the world she created. As a result, Eliza feels like an outsider, unless she's talking with her cyberfriends or working on her popular webcomic Monstrous Sea. Wallace, a new boy at school, has been the first person to bring her out of her shell in ages. As their friendship grows, he confides his chilling secret, but Eliza still can't bring herself to share her web identity with him. When the truth comes out, will this secret shatter their relationship? Told in a series of letters, instant messages, comics, and prose, this book focuses on relationships and identity. It tackles social anxiety and asks serious questions: What makes a relationship valid in this era of social media? Are online interactions as meaningful as those in real life? Zappia's work will resonate with teens who write, create art, and love fandoms. Introverted readers will connect with the protagonist. VERDICT A must-have for all YA collections, especially where geek culture is celebrated.—Jennifer Rummel, Cragin Library, Colchester, CT

In the vein of Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, Eliza Mirk has an online alter ego where she is known as LadyConstellation, the creator of one of the most popular webcomics called Monstrous Sea. Just like Cath, Eliza pours her heart into what she is passionate about. Eliza feels more comfortable talking to her online friends since in real life people think she is weird.A new guy named Wallace moves to town during senior year and it's fate that he is also a huge Monstrous Sea fan. Eliza debates whether to let him know that she is the creator of the webcomic but decides to ride it out that she is just a huge fan of the series and likes to create fan art.One day Eliza's world starts crashing down when her identity of the creator of Monstrous Sea gets revealed. Eliza starts to have panic attacks and her anxiety increases. She even starts seeing a therapist. Francesca Zappia even touches upon grief through Wallace and what happened to his biological father. Warning, there are slight mentions of suicide and possible depression for those who are sensitive to those topics.Francesca Zappia delves into two different types of families. The structure of each family shapes Eliza and Wallace differently. We have Eliza's family with a mom, dad, two brothers and her dog. On the other hand, we have Wallace's family where he lives with two step parents, a half sister and a step sister. It's good for readers to know that there are different varieties of families out there and there is no such thing as the perfect family. Everyone has their share of joy and distress.Throughout the novel, Zappia includes illustrations from Eliza's webcomics which acts as a visual aid to show readers what Eliza is currently working on. Zappia also includes some of the conversation she has through an online forum. They add a more personal touch to the novel. The interaction between Eliza and Wallace is perfect. There is no instalove and their friendship grows before their love blooms. Zappia breaks down stereotypes. Wallace who enjoys football can also love writing and reading webcomics. Even one of Eliza's brothers likes theatre and choir despite the love for sports and video games. Zappia reminds readers that we cannot judge people by their looks. There is more than meets the eye. We just need to scratch under the surface a bit to see it.Readers who love fan fiction and fan art alike will devour this book! This book is made for people who like to geek out at home on forums and find themselves chatting with people online. There is no question that Eliza and Her Monsters is another favorite novel of mine. With its quirkiness, honesty and sense of nostalgia, I can relate to Eliza and all the people who live on that Monstrous Sea forum.Eliza and Her Monsters is a novel to celebrate fandom. No matter what fandom you belong to, go out there and create something meaningful. I am sure someone will find your creation to be extraordinary and you will make at least one new friend. Fandom brings people together no matter what kind of lives they are living. Fandom is where people feel like themselves despite the tough things they have to accept in their lives.

"My beginning is time-stamped in history."Monstrous Sea, an immensely popular webcomic adored and devoured by millions, essentially boils down to a story about a girl fighting off monsters due to a sense of duty.Eliza Mirk, a socially awkward and anxiety-riddled teenager, is not only the anonymous creator of Monstrous Sea, but also is a real-life girl trying to fight off her metaphorical monsters due to a sense of duty."I am LadyConstellation.I am also Eliza Mirk. This is the paradox that can never be solved."As a twenty-something that reads predominantly YA, I catch a lot of slack. I can recall on more than one occasion being on the receiving end of judgmental glances while walking through the “teen” section at Barnes & Noble or while purchasing a stack of books from the “What Teens Are Reading” table. I also have a handful of friends who frequently ask me: “but what do you read for real? Like not that fantasy kids’ stuff.” And despite the fact that countless books marketed as YA are anything but (I’m looking at you, ACOMAF), books like THIS are WHY I deal with the haters.I can’t begin to describe what a joy this book was to consume devour in two sittings read. From the gorgeous cover art (seriously I pet it when it came in the mail...overshare?...) to the smirk-inducing characters and hard-hitting narrative, Eliza And Her Monsters was everything I didn’t know I needed.Told through chat windows, fan forums, artwork, and typical internal-dialogue the story addresses everything from first loves and fights with “parents who don’t understand you” to depression, suicidal thoughts, and how to balance your online identity with your real one. And while I personally couldn’t identify with all the monsters that plagued Eliza, I do believe this book realistically addressed these serious topics without romanticizing them and helped me understand these disorders in a way I’d never considered before. To be able to shed new light on a frequently discussed area in an honest and relatable manner is, to me, the sign of an incredibly powerful writer and for that I praise Zappia. And while this novel does address some intense emotions, it still finds a way to be light, uplifting, and encouraging – especially through the budding romance between Wallace and Eliza. I swear I’ve never grinned at a winky face so hard in my life! I felt like I was flashing back to my teenage years.By the end of the book, Zappia shows us -- through Eliza -- how to face your fears and celebrate your story. If you can’t find it – create it! And above all, fight your monsters – don’t get eaten.

These were Reagan's own words - much better than Killing Reagan by O'Reilly, who made him out to be weak and ineffective for much of his administration. It was Reagan who turned the economy around - Bill Clinton's administration only benefited by following Reagan's policies because he had no choice, thanks to a Republican Congress.

Although Ronald Reagan created most of this autobiography through taped conversations with another writer, the book is awesome because you get the impression that Reagan is speaking directly to you--which was exactly the intent of his speeches and broadcasts while he was alive. The reader is part of a fascinating journey, that of an entirely human and highly principled man that lives the American Dream while remaining true to himself and his God. There are many other biographies of Reagan out there, but they will not move a reader as this one does, because these are Reagan's own thoughts in a style that mirrors, as closely as possible, the communication style of the President and private citizen loved by many. The highlight of the book comes in its last third, which chronicles President Reagan's relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev. If for no other reason, buy this book to see how a tough-minded, judicious American President was able to negotiate with the highest-ranking member of the now defunct Soviet Union one-on-one. When I re-read it, it makes me proud to come from the United States and to have lived during the Reagan Era.

Fantastic book that gives insight into the life and leadership of the man who saved us from the Cold War. I wish I had known what a great president he was but I was just a little young to understand how special Reagan's views were. None after him can hold a candle to this man who had a deep and profound Conservative awakening after once being a Hollywood liberal. Americans regained freedom, national, and economic security under Reagan. I'm pleased to say my son his now reading this book - if only we could teach the next generation the importance of small government and personal responsibility.

Reagan's autobiography is a must read for anyone seeking to better understand the 40th president. The writing is clear and flowing. The book provides a fascinating look at Reagan's early life, growing up in Illinois, finding work during the Great Depression as a radio announcer and later actor, and ultimately becoming a TV personality and actor's guild labor union leader. The bulk of the book covers the core issues of his presidency - fighting inflation, supply-side economics, Iran-Contra, and negotiating an end through the Cold War via "peace through strength". I would have liked to read more about his family life; his children are rarely mentioned and his first marriage - which lasted nine years - is hardly discussed. Another minor criticism: in the later half of the book, while discussing his two terms as president, letters or speeches are often quoted at length. This is sometimes useful for the reader, but at times I felt that correspondence between Reagan and others - particularly his Soviet counterparts - could have been summarized rather then quoted in their entirety.

I'm not reviewing the guy's life, just the book. Nicely written autobiography with the right amount of personal reflection and consideration of decisions as he went through life. Not overly detailed, or obsessive about perfect writing (looking at you Thatcher's autobiography), so it reads as though a person is talking to you. Could have been a little more detailed and offered humility with certain poor decisions.

President Reagan was in office in my young days from times I do not remember to the edge of what I can recall. It was somehow comforting to hear his voice and the message he gave in his audio book reminded me that America is something to be proud of, not to be apologized for around the world. While short (3 CD's) the fact that it was written and read in the audio CD by the President himself made this a very informative, inspiring and encouraging experience. We need someone with the honesty, a good heart, well intentioned, and believing in the people of America and that our time is not over as the leader of the free world but is only beginning. Who can master communication as well as he did, and to capture not only our minds and logic but our hearts as well.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history and the presidency during Ronald Reagan's era. Five stars, without hesitation.(I only wished it was longer!)

Amazon.com Review

While there is a plethora of books available that provide tips on Web design, most authors leave a significant gap between the theory and practice--a gap that is left up to the reader to fill. Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed boldly steps into that gap with specific observations and suggestions backed with solid quantitative analysis. This book focuses only on home page design as the most important point of presence for any Web site. This definitive work is coauthored by Jakob Nielsen--the accepted industry expert in Web usability--and Marie Tahir, an expert in user profiling. Their collaboration has produced a guide of such rare practical benefit that Web designers will likely wear out their first copy scouring the pages to savor every last morsel of wisdom. The book begins with a chapter of precise guidelines that serve as a checklist of the features and functionality to include on your home page. The specifics found in categories such as "revealing content through examples" and "graphic design" will quickly hook you and whet your appetite for more. These guidelines are followed up with hard statistics and an examination of the ominous Jakob's Law: "Users spend most of their time on other sites than your site." Here you'll find some interesting statistics about how various conventions like search, privacy policies, and logos are used. All this leads up to the showcase element of the book--a systematic deconstruction of 50 of the most popular home pages on the Web. The authors painstakingly pick apart each in an uncompromising autopsy of usability. Each site is graphically analyzed for its use of real estate and summarized with the frankness only found from true experts. Then each section of the home page is bulleted and analyzed for potential improvements. It's a bold move to offer a critique of industry-standard Web sites such as Yahoo, CNET, and eBay, but the authors have done such a fine job that the designers of those sites will surely make reading this book a high priority. For the rest of us, this work will serve as an invaluable gospel. --Stephen W. Plain Topics covered: Design guidelines, convention usage, screen real estate, navigation, content presentation, search facilities, links, graphics and animation, advertising, news, customization, and customer feedback.

From Library Journal

Nielsen, dogmatic don of web usability, and his strategy director Tahir believe that a company needs a well-designed homepage to succeed online. They provide 113 brief usability guidelines that lead into a chapter on homepage statistics, giving readers an idea of conventions to follow or break. The homepages of 50 major web sites, from About.com to Yahoo.com, are then pictured and critiqued in terms of those recommendations and statistics. A useful resource for both novice and professional web designers; recommended for all libraries.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! It's outdated. The 50 websites have ALL been completely redesigned, if they even exist today. Nothing in this book was helpful.Homepage Usability: 50 Websites DeconstructedHomepage Usability

After reading some of the reviews here, I almost didn't buy this book. But I'm glad I did. I agree that some people might find some of the critiques nit-picking. I also agree that the authors are not qualified to give copywriting advice. But the point about exclamation marks on the homepage is a good one. They are overused. I've overused them myself. And they do make a page look like so much hype in many cases. Copywriters get carried away with hype and the web is no place for that.I don't think we can take anyone's advice in total all the time. But I can tell you this. After I read only a few pages in this book I saw changes that I needed to make. After looking at the critiques in the book, I can easily see the small very fine details that can make all the difference in the world in usability and, moreover, in marketing.Jakob does extensive testing with real people and I have a lot of faith in his findings. His word is not the last word. But I trust him and I think people who are involved with designing or writing Web sites should read what he writes. They don't have to agree with everything. But not to read him would be a mistake. The changes I've made due to his advice have paid big dividends. I don't hold 100 percent to everything he says. But I believe I have a site that is very user-friendly in part because I apply his principals and I pass them on to my clients. If people would just read the intricate detail in each critique, they would see what one small change could make and why it should be done the way the authors suggest.I would have given the book five stars but the book itself had some misspelled words and it used the word "website" instead of "Web site" which is the accepted way to write it. I don't necessarily blame the authors for that. It was probably a low level editor who let those errors happen. But they shouldn't be there. Especially in a slick, well designed book and a book about usability and perfection. But to anyone involved in making decisions about a Web site --- especially designers and copywriters --- I highly recommend this book.Susanna K. HutchesonOwner and Executive Copy DirectorPowerwriting.com LLC

The value of this book comes from the sheer volume of insight it contains: Jakob and Marie leave no stone unturned listing all the things that make for well-designed home pages.A few downsides:- The home page reviews are comprehensive, but the "problems" the authors find get somewhat repetitive after a while. In fact, after reading through about 20 reviews I was able to find more than half of the "problems" before reading the review (simply by looking at the screnshots).- Another thing the authors could have done to make the reviews more useful: separate serious problems from trivial ones instead of listing them all in a single list. Conclusion:While the book does have its quirks, it is a solid reference overall and will make a great addition to any web designer's library.

A good book showing (mostly) what NOT to do via examples of public web sites (often a sequence over time.). Insightful

In my research of writing my You Are Here Internet Guides, I have personally visited and toured well over 15,000 Web sites and I must say I find this book very impressive. A flawless job of deconstructing these 50 sites makes you want to look more introspectively at what visually stimulates viewers. It explains in detail what insightfully makes Web design sufficient and efficient for the viewer. The commentary is very easily spoken and will make you think twice about some characteristics of Web design. Things you may have normally taken for granted in Web design are pointed out. For instance, intricacies such as arrows pointing at words and how to keep it simple with text links make the user well informed. Or how some redundancies keep the user from reading more, and in turn decrease the impact of the intended marketing message shows that somes sites may be susceptible to overusability. The book takes the word "clutter" and defines it, and explains ways around it. The simplicity concept is explored deeply, explaining a site can be easy to use without sacrificing good content.I like how each site deconstructed has a pie chart that tells you can quickly and easily look at and see what the homepage allocates space for.Much thought put into critiquing the sites. I found the homepage design statistics in the beginning to be quite useful and accurate.Overall, the book is a masterpiece. There is a chock full of thought into each homepage.
