Using poetic form, Wolf tells the story in alternating narratives by a dozen of the human participants and Seaman, the Newfoundland dog belonging to Meriwether Lewis. I very much enjoyed this book. It might be a good book for older students, but there are several spots where it talks about very adult natured issues. For example it goes into some detail about Sacajawea going into her monthly cycle and what happened at one point. I am a 4th grade teacher and would not use this as a read aloud with my class. Not sure how other teachers of elementary school got by this, but it is a problem I prefer not to create in my classroom.

Written in a very unique format that is a little hard to get used to at first, but once I got used to it I enjoyed the book very much. I like that it tells about events from different viewpoints. I liked how the end deals with some of the harsh realities of what life was like after they returned. There is also a section at the end that basically tells about each character and what we really know about them vs. any literary license that was taken by the author. That is typical of historical fiction, but I liked the format this author put it in--its written more like a list so it is easier to follow, especially with so many characters.Some of the chapters are written from the viewpoint of their dog--those seemed a little strange to me, but still it worked ok.It must be hard to get copies of the book. I am a school teacher so I ordered copies to use with a class last year and they came two or three at a time over several weeks. By the time I got all of them I had probably waited 3-4 weeks. This year I am ordering about twenty more. I ordered them about a week ago and they still haven't shipped yet and it actually says on the page that sometimes they take 1-2 months to ship! I'm used to quick Amazon shipping and didn't really notice that when I placed the order. It isn't a big deal to me because I don't plan to use them soon, but be prepared for a wait. If its just one copy I don't know if the wait is as long, but if you want this in a week it probably will not happen.Update..Ordered on Oct. 1st. Received email from Amazon on Oct. 25th saying they are still not available to ship and that the new estimated delivery date is between Dec. 4th and Jan. 6th. That is three months after I ordered them! I went to Barnes and Noble and ordered them and about half will ship in two days, the other half in about two weeks. Normally I prefer Amazon to Barnes and Noble, but not in this case.

Interestingly written as almost diary entries by various members of the expedition party including Lewis's dog and Clark's slave. A bit raw, but those were the times. Two more opposite men than Lewis and Clark coming together to explore new lands acquired by Jefferson's government and forcing the native inhabitants to be thrilled with our occupation of 'our' land sets the stage for the exploitation of Native Americans which still exists. Much of the excursion isn't pretty or exciting according to this book, but I would assume it is more accurate than the romanticized version of us assimilating into the land of extreme beauty and potential.

I purchased this book for my grandson for Christmas last year. He was struggling in reading, except when it came to hiistory where he just couldn't get enough. Lewis and Clark enthrall him and he found this novel fascinating.

Easy read -- great way to learn about Lewis and Clark's expedition without getting bogged down in detail. Creative synopsis of their journey.

I first discovered this book many years ago when I was in high school. I used to skip class and go down the street to a big Barnes and Noble and just sit and read. This book rocked my world! It had everything I'd ever wanted in a good book: colorful, amusing illustrations, the writing is clear and humorous, and the subject matter is fascinating. The author takes you on a very engaging and overarching tour of not only how hallucinogens work in the brain, but how they were discovered, and how society and policy has reacted to these substances.After I read this book the first time, I kept going back and reading the first couple of chapters over and over again. The descriptions and illustrations of neurons and neurotransmitters in those chapters are a fantastic introduction to the exciting and ever expanding world of neuroscience. Now that I'm a neuroscientist, I can say without a doubt that this book is what sent me down the rabbit hole. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's hard not to love this book - definitely worth buying for yourself or giving as a gift.

Unless you are a neuropharmacologist the chances are very good that nearly everything you think you know about hallucinogenic drugs is wrong. None of the widely disseminated information published by anti-drug campaigns is accurate and nearly everything in the alternative press is at least biased if not illusory. Pellerin saw the famous TV ad, "This is drugs. This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?" She answered in the affirmative, "... a lot of questions." TRIPS is the result of a decade of research, interviews, web searches and insight. It is also wildly funny, opinionated, scientifically stringent, historically illuminating and illustrated by R. Crumb, the cartoonist of record for the 1960s. Do you know that LSD, mescaline and psilocibin do not cause hallucinations? They only mimic them. The difference is that true hallucinations appear real. A schizophrenic does not know he is hallucinating. Virtually without exception the LSD user understands clearly that the experience is drug induced and will pass. (The exceptions appear to be borderline psychotics who may be pushed over the edge by the experience. The few and widely reported suicides evidently occur in already suicidal individuals.) Nor are these drugs addictive, more the opposite since users often experience uncomfortable introspection and/or a sense of having gotten the point and tend to leave the experience behind. None of which information eliminates the fact that street drugs are by definition illegal and quite possibly of dangerous composition. The wide dissemination of LSD and other hallucinogens which blossomed as the Summer of Love in 1967 and either saved, wrecked or had no lasting impact on American culture (take your choice) began in Army and OSS/CIA research. In searching for better interrogation/mind control/chemical weapon-type drugs, U.S. government researchers administered a whole panoply of mind-bending substances to test subjects, themselves and each other. Then the government funded private research labs as well, letting the cat out of the top-secret bag. Because many of the psychotropic drugs have virtually no lasting physical effects they are difficult to evaluate in animal studies. How can you tell if a rat has changed it's attitude about authority or had an out-of-body experience? Therefore psychiatrists and psychologists who wanted to test such substances as possible therapeutic tools often experimented on themselves to get insight into what they were doing to patients. Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Baba Ram Dass) are only the best known among hundreds of participating researchers and thousands of clinical test subjects. TRIPS fills you in on the strange contortions of regulatory policy as well. For example, in the late 1980s when an estimated 10-20% of American college students were using MDMA, known popularly as Ecstasy, FDA policy classified the drug as too dangerous to test and denied all research permits. (MDMA had been tested on rats with dire results. Today FDA policy has changed and a spokesperson admits that Ecstasy is one of many drugs which rats should avoid. In humans it can cause nerve damage only in very large doses, with undetermined residual effects.) Pellerin's intent is not to promote drug use, but simply to get accurate information to the public. Illegal hallucinogen use has remained at a relatively constant level since the 1960s. It is her belief that former users and potential users need to be fully informed about their choices, the very real dangers, and the best available explanation of what it is that these substances do. Perhaps surprisingly, even after three decades of brain chemistry research there are vast gaps in our understanding of how our heads work. She applauds the more open experimental policy of the last few years and foresees fairly rapid progress in untangling the mystery of thought and consciousness. An illuminating read.

Looking for a little reality in the nonsense-clogged canon of drug texts? Yes? Then this is the book for you. The author has meticulously separated the wheat from the chaff, dispensing with the usual shock propaganda and instead using real science (imagine that!) to explain, in just the right amount of detail, how hallucinogens work. This is a remarkably honest and even-handed text that assembles the results of the most up-to-date research into a fascinating and relevant subject. Well-illustrated, factual and entertaining, I'd recommend this book to anyone with curious teenagers. In short, "Trips" is a ray of light in an otherwise benighted field of inquiry, and Ms. Pellerin should be applauded for this courageous and intelligent work.

A often overlooked point of view that the war on drugs culture tends to ignore or neglect is the fact that "even the best theories are history if enough people produce the right number of contradictory findings". So, in my opinion this book does a great service in informing those whose opinions are not biased towards total allegiance to the status quo.I have to laugh when i see headlines in the news about how the government is willing to ignore it's own findings on the medicinal uses of marijuana due to the ideological monetary inconvenience that information imposes on the financial structure of certain government agencies...even more so given that the money could be better spent on policing real issues such as terrorism, violence...etc,etc.The desire to alter conciousness is as old as humans themselves and this book illustrates that clearly and precise. There is even an altered states graphic form for the prospective experimenter to fill out.Overall the nice comic illustrations provide the needed comic relief to get through some light scientific reading...although very accurate it's too light for any serious scientific or chemistry buffs. But for the average user(reader) it's good to know all that is included before you take any risks.The section in the back of the book filled with URL's is also a great place to further your understanding of all the issues and information regarding LSD or any other illegal substance. A good fast read and I highly recommend this book.

My one-line summary pretty much says it all. LSD shouldn't be lumped with drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Its potential benefits are great. The previous customer reviewer, who said that the book is irresponsible, must not have read the book. They're probably a knee-jerk, "all drugs are bad", type (though they claim to be so familiar with this subject that they can say they've seen this information all before, which strikes me as very odd, given several of the comments). People like this reviewer are the main problem. They live with closed minds. Sharing information about this subject that is accurate can't be anything but responsible.

I found it to be helpful and interesting

I'm definitely open and receptive to any positive message, and have read books with a religious slant in the past I thought were great, so I thought I'd give this book a try. It does have some good points, but boy oh boy do you really have to sit through some condescending balogna to get to the point!! Understanding that technically this was written for a different audience aside, the meat of the lessons are buried beneath pages of repetitive tripe that basically serves only to point out how "non-Christians couldn't possibly understand" or how lucky Christians are to magically have this superior ability to know what it is to serve others that those poor thick-headed non-Christians simply don't have the capacity for, silly reprobates! Some of the ideas can also come off a litte sexist and old fashioned, but I think mostly are relative to the time the book was written. Outside of that, a lot of the ideas have merit, and I found myself highliting many sections and passages. The concepts that I did try to incorporate in my marriage were very successful. Honestly, just reading a book about communicating better started a great dialogue between us. I would recommend with the above warnings to skim past the junk.

I do not write my headline statement lightly. It took about three weeks to finish Mr. Chapman's book, but every page was well worth it. Gary fills each page not with theory, but with facts and practical tools we need to strengthen our marriage. I have read several books on marriage so far, but this one was authentic and applicable.Thanks Gary!

Chapman has done it again with solid marriage advice from a Christian worldview. I enjoyed the end of each chapter with the questions and actions he gives for couples to take their learning and communicating with each other to the next level.

This an interesting account of several trips by Eames along the Danube or somewhat near it. He begins at the source of the Danube, a highly disputed matter and proceeds down along the Danube to Budapest, where he throws in the towel and returns home. He then returns for a journey by a tramp steamer down the balance of the Danube to the Black Sea with a side trip up to the Saxon Villages of Romania.Oddly enough for a travel writer, Eames occasionally seems to lose objectivity. He takes against Bucharest in particular, but there are certainly charming neighborhoods there. Eames is equally dyspeptic about portions of Austria, not because they're unpleasant or ugly, but because of old associations which these areas, particularly Linz, have with Hitler and the Nazis.All told, even with Eames's prejudices and the odd two in one character of the book, an interesting read and one which anyone with an interest in Central and Eastern Europe would undoubtedly find interesting.

Reading this book gave me an excellent sense of the countries and people along the Danube, from its source to the Black Sea. It is written with wit and insight, and I found it difficult to put down the book once I got started.I have worked my way through Claudio Magris book "Danube", and I still consider it essential reading, but it was a struggle to stay interested in all of the interesting people and their works who lived along the river. Here is how Andrew Eames describes Claudio Magris' work. "The great man exercised his synapses through four hundred pages, displaying immense erudition, leaping between intellectual rooftops and poking his nose down the chimney stacks of downriver nations like a PhD chimney sweep from Mary Poppins."This sums up my impression of Claudio Magris' book far better than anything I could have written, and is an excellent example of Andrew Eames' writing style.I'm also familiar with stretches of the Danube and its people through parts of Germany and Austria. I've found that Eames captures my impressions precisely with a few well chosen words. I don't know anything about people and places further down the river, but I can only surmise that Eames' observations are as accurate downstream as they were upstream. His book certainly entertained me and inspired me. I now want to grab a bike or boat, or put on a pair of hiking boots to see the country for myself.If you've been dreaming of a similar journey down the Danube, as I have, or if you are merely interested in the landscape and its people, as well as their histories, along the entire length of the Danube, this is by far the best book on the subject. Do yourself a favor and read it.

This is my third book by this author and the geographical region of this book has certain echoes of his book on the famous Orient Express; "The 8:55 to Baghdad". This time however the author is motivated to follow some of the route of the famous writer, Patrick Leigh Fermor, who went this way in the 1930s and wrote the classic works of "A Time of Gifts" and "Between the Woods and the Water" with a promised third and concluding volume to be published posthumously in 2013. Inspired by these works Eames decides to travel and narrate a trip from Germany through the "Iron Gates" to Instanbul, following - indeed partly traveling on - the "blue" Danube River.It is 70 odd years since the famous "Paddy" journeyed through these same lands and, of course, much has been changed by World Wars, communist domination and neglect and viscous ethnic cleansing and pogroms, but Eames still discovers treasures and even peoples from those times. The author even manages to find his own aristocrats to welcome and awe him, staying in castles and Hofs with surviving descendants of fabled families of the Austrian Holy Empire.But it is with his own generation that he most relates, the Serbian peasants and the gloriously mixed crews of the working Danube fleets as he walks, trains, drives and floats to his successful conclusion, the Black Sea.This gloriously satisfying read is one of the best travel

Eames travels along and on the Danube from start (Germany's Black Forest) to end (the Black Sea off Rumania.) American tourists on a Danube River cruise will get so much more good info and background atmosphere from this book than they can from thier cruise ship program directors (as helpful as they usually are.) Most of his narrative is based on first-person accounts of men and women who lived in each city, town or country house, mostly (not always) escaped Communism, and returned in the 1990's. Compared to Claudio Magris' "Danube" from 1986, Eames has written the better book by far. Read Magris if you are a serious student of German literature and are able to compare Eastern Europe under communism with today's mixed economies, governments and post-Yugoslavia national identities. And if you are not on or planning a cruise on the Danube. I own both books. I'm stuck on p. 147 in Magris, but finished Eames while cruising the Danube where it serves as the border between Bulgaria and Rumania. Read this book if... William Larson

I read both Blue River, Black Sea and the recommended Danube while prepping for a river boat cruise through Germany and into Budapest. I highly recommend Blue River Black Sea as an easy read and a good companion book. I am an avid nonfiction history reader and liked Danube as well for the insight it afforded to a part of Europe and its history with which I am not too familiar. Blue River is more enjoyable as well as informative and if you are headed in that direction for business or holiday, I recommend it.

I've been widowed twice now, once in my early 30s and the second time in my late 50s, both devastating losses of wonderful men. My second husband was not only my lover and dearest friend, but also my partner in a company we started up and ran together for 16 years. Then he developed Alzheimer's, and during his 7-year battle with the disease, I had to choose between caring for him at home until the end, versus the company and my career. That was a no-brainer. Sooooo... now that he is gone and I'm beginning to think about trying to climb out of the depths, I started looking for advice for widows on how to figure out what to do after such life-altering losses. I purchased several books that promised to do that.Frankly, at this point, I have zero interest in another relationship. But the title of this book tickled me, and the reviews intrigued me, so I bought it on a whim. And it's done far more for me than the "for widows only" books. It isn't a dating guide, it's a guide to looking into your own heart and soul and discovering who you really are ... or would like to be. It is, as others have said, very well-written, easy to read, thought-provoking, and wise.

After my husband of 37 years died, I was very confused about how this part of the social contract works these days. Swiping right and left isn't exactly me. The title is an eye-grabber, and not really what the book is about. This book gave me permission not to worry about swiping, or anything else. Being me is more important, and there's room for growth and as much experimentation as I want -- when I want it. The book is more about relaxing and having hope for a freer future, with tips on how to achieve that, whatever that means to you. Highly recommended for people who haven't thought about such things in a while.

As a newly single woman, I found much of this book informative and helpful.After a 18 year marriage, and a 5 year long term relationship, I suddenly, and reluctantly, found myself out in the singles world again. Even as I was becoming more stable in my new role as a single person, I was still hesitant about "getting out there" again. The thought of meeting someone new was scary, and uncomfortable.The information in this book helped me look at my future relationship(s) in a different light. I am not quite as scared, and even a bit excited...some days.I came across this book in the Recommended Reading section of "Get Over the Guilt" by Macy Kayne. "Get Over the Guilt", as well as some of the other books Ms. Kayne recommends were very helpful for me.

The information is helpful, but it is definitely aimed at a much older divorcee or widow. As a 30-something divorcee with no children, who is the one who initiated the divorce, I found much of the information to be fairly mundane. By and large it seems like it was written of a woman who more or less gave up her independence and identity for her family. While there certainly was some helpful information and guidance, very little of it was earth shattering or particularly relevant for me.

It is for the divorcee, the widow/widower, the gay man who can't seem to find the right guy, the forever single woman who can't seem to find the right guy. It reads for all of us who want love and are seemingly searching in the wrong places, or not searching at all. I don't normally order a book like this, but I was feeling desperate. I'm so glad I did! I'm sending it to my ever beautiful, high maintenance friend, who just became single, and to my gay guy friend who is so handsome, yet believes that he is destined to live life alone. I am also sending it to my beautiful friend whose husband passed away unexpectedly last fall. This book is good for our lonely souls. This book has a great amount of depth. Getting Naked Again keeps you interested with the dialog and is filled with so much more than I ever expected. It is written professionally and from the heart.

I talked to many people I knew about various chapters of this book. When I told them the title, they were a bit skeptical. It does cover physical intimacy but it is much, much more about being vulnerable and re-aquiring an attitude of hope when it comes to relationships.Some of the ideas were familiar to me but was explained in a more in-depth complete way than other books. It is easy to read, thought-provoking and very useful. I passed it on yesterday to my mom to read since she lost her husband last year.

After a long tern, marriage the thought of getting naked with a stranger was unthinkable. Low self esteem, and poor body image adds to the scary thought of a new relationship and how to go about it. I found this funny and enlightening, and while it hasn't happened yet I am better prepared if it does.

This book has proven to be a great asset in dealing with marital betrayal and knowing what the Bible says about the topic. I appreciated the word studies of Hebrew and Greek to look for the original writer's intended bu the original writer in his original language and that the entire Bible is consulted in the his important topic. This was so helpful to me that I have purchased the paperback version as well as the kindle version. Thank you.

There is much confusion and often destructive legalism surrounding the sensitive subject of divorce in the Christian community. Ms Keel shines revealing truth and light on God's Biblical intent and purpose. She thoroughly reveals His extraordinary love, grace, and justice. Important read for all.

Very helpful if looking for confirmation on making a decision in marriage troubles. Also clearly references bible verses, encourages prayer and hearing from God in your personal situation. Not a final solution but definitely helped me.

It is such a sad thing to watch this happen to believers and to have experienced myself. Highly recommend this book.

The author is clear and straightforward about God’s heart for marriage and his allowance of divorce in some situations. Great read!
