Got this used book for a song! I'm an amateur cheesemaker and this book has me wanting to make everything in it! So beautifully photographed and the descriptions of the cheeses are great. Hoping I can learn a lot to apply to what I'm doing.

Great book about cheeses, after buying one for myself I bought one for my son.

I am currently studying for the American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professional Exam and all of Max's books are my "go to" books when studying. For all cheese lovers, this is a great place to start your journey.

It looks like a coffee table book, but it's actually one of the most valuable cheese reference books out there. Useful, complete information on a wide range of cheeses -- much more than the usual little tasting note or tiny snippet of info that most cheese reference books provide. This book provides real, useable information on cheese for the cheese professional or the casual connoisseur. True, its content is limited -- it only has so many cheeses -- but what's here is extremely valuable. If only more cheese books were this good.

I ordered this book because I love cheese and because I wanted to find out more about specific cheeses. It's well written and was well researched. My favorite part of the description is the fact that the author mentions what cheese(s)a particular cheese is similar to. Great descriptions!

Wish there were suggested FOOD pairings, but very thorough on the wine/drink pairings and preparation of the cheese itself.

I bought this book for my husband who loves cheese. He is enjoying all of the wonderful information and learning of cheeses he didn't know existed.

My 12 yo son liked this book, but I was very disappointed to find that in the second chapter, one of the characters was referenced as having psychic powers, albeit in a joking way, but I was shocked given the Bible is clear on God’s position on such things. You could of course use it as a teachable moment to share what God’s word says about witchcraft, sorcery, divination, but just wanted other Christian parents to be aware. I will continue to proof read. So far the rest seem to be fine. You could just skip that chapter...

written by my 11 yr old daughter: This book is perfect for helping kids grow in their faith and understanding of God's Word. By having exciting mysteries in each chapter, and not giving the solution, this book gives the reader an opportunity to see how much of the Bible is filled with answers for life's many problems. To find the answer, the reader must find the answer in their Bible, thus making it a fun and educational way to teach kids to appreciate God's Word more than ever.

My kids absolutely love this book!!!!! It is filled with short mysteries that they have to help solve by looking up passages in the Bible, which is the clue to solve the mystery. My children are 7 and 10 and beg to read "just one more". So far there has only been 1 story where they just didn't get it, but with a little super sleuthing they were able to figure it out. We homeschool so this book is a great way to get in our reading and Bible requirements at the same time. As a mom I am SUPER happy with this purchase. We will absolutely be ordering the rest of the books in the series!!!!!!!

This book is a damn joke. $14.00 for a 48 page pamphlet of stupid recipes and pages filled with ridiculous drawings, etc. to take up space. This book is NOT worth the price! I could spend 15 minutes on google and find 100 times the avocado recipes that make this pamphlet a laughing stock. DO NOT BUY!!!

Abbott is about a black woman reporter in 1972 Detroit, who investigates a series of murders of an otherworldly nature.It is excellent.The tone is both true to its time (from what I’ve heard, as I’m neither from Detroit nor Black nor old enough to have been alive in 1972.)Abbott doesn’t take any crap from anyone, and at the same time she has her weaknesses and flaws. Her supporting cast and her enemies are not as deeply fleshed-our as the main character, but considering that this book represents only five comics, that’s not a significant concern.The story is excellent, the art is dynamic and detailed, and the combination makes for a compelling experience. As with all comics, the end of the comic is not the resolution of the main source of conflict, but that’s good, because it may signal more to comic. I hope that Saladin Ahmed, Sami Kivelä, and Jason Wordie return to this world to give us another glimpse.

This is a fantastic read. Elena Abbott is a wonderful heroine -- smart, brave, insightful, and determined. Oh, also incredibly stylish and sexy. The setting is 1970s Detroit with all sorts of dangers ranging from the too-plausible (racist cops) to the incredible (creepy occult beasts). The combination of historical detail and creative horror puts this book over the top for me. There was something to be intrigued by (or cower from) on virtually every page. The art is great -- it's crisp and alternates between beauty and grotesque body horror (sometimes weirdly combining the two).IMO, this is a horror comic not to miss.

This book is a wonderful and exceptionally well crafted supernatural crime drama, Abbott written by Saladin Ahmed with art by the amazing up and coming talented Sami Kivela, and published by Boom Studios, this comic is a rad flashback to 1972 Detroit, and tells the story of a tough as nails reporter named Abbott, and she doesn't take crap from anyone, and has a Pam Grier style swagger about her! When a new odd story she's on starts bringing back old memories she falls in to a starts having terrifying visionsand she is hunted by mythical monsters, she has to nuckel up and fight, and I just love it and the character Abbott, she is just such a great main lead, she is strong and independent, but she is also kind and respectful, she's brash, but she treats her friends well and always pays back her debts, on the real this book is just so good and I super duper highly recommend it!

I don't know if the writer or artist remember the 1970's, but I do and there is something perfect about the rendition of that era in this book. There was something Lovecraftian about that decade and the essence ia captured in this story.Nobody understands the pacing of comics better than Ahmed. This is a masterwork.

Admittedly, I'm a fan of Saladin Ahmed's work, but this is his first comic offering I've read, and it did not disappoint. He weaves a hell of a story, and Sami Kavelä's artwork took me right back to the comics of my childhood. I hope Elena Abbott goes on to have more adventures we can share.

I thought I'd like this. I didn't expect how powerfully it would make me feel. The story, writing, art - every little detail. It packs a punch.I hope there will be more stories to tell.

I loved this book! It’s a 1970’s occult noir following hard-boiled reporter Elena Abbott as she tries to piece together the story behind several gruesome murders that the cops are all to eager to sweep under the rug. Beautiful visual story telling and a cast full of charming characters.It’s also a stand-alone comic (I think...this story is finished by the end of the book) so it’s easy to pick up without worrying about learning the lore of a whole universe, or following along book after book after book.

I am very disappointed in this TINY book.....The description didn't make it clear that this is all prose and nothing more. It is a very small format and there are NO paintings.... Too much money for 96 tiny pages with none of his paintings. I will return it.

In what was a great disappointment, I discovered that the 2013 Unicorn Press re-print of this excellent book does *not* include the plates of Churchill's paintings. All of the used editions I've seen include those plates in color.

Other people have commented on the lack of plates, it's true, sadly they didn't include them, it would have been a terrific book with that. That aside, the way Churchill waxes on the hidden benefits that come from painting, especially in oils, makes for a very inspiring read. He started at age 40, a late bloomer he admits. I was intrigued by all the things he was able to see that came from creating art. I won't spoil things by revealing his insights in his short easy to read book, but it has a very inspiring effect and will make you want to go pick up a brush or pencil, and without being timid in doing so..I will re-read this book again when I am needing encouragement, such positive thoughts are in it, he makes very good points!

I watched an interview with former President George W. Bush saying how this essay made him realize he wanted to paint. As an illustrator my whole life, I hadn’t considered painting until recently. I read this book and it inspired me much as it did the former president! I loved it. It was an easy read as it’s more of an essay than a book and it was shipped to me quickly which I loved.

This is the edition which is illustrated with images of Churchill's paintings. its a small book filled with inspiration for the beginning painter and its a keeper in my art library. I'm a late bloomer in the field of visual representational art as was Churchill and its delight full to find that he also began painting to express creativity and to be in the moment. For him to escape the cares of government, for me, to transcend an ordinary life.

The amazon description did not make it clear this book is text only. There are no photos of Churchills paintings in this book. Total disappointment when I discovered that fact after receiving the book. I am really irked at Amazon for not making this clear before I pushed the order button

In this little volume, just a few thousands words, Churchill makes his case for why one should take up painting as a pastime or hobby. Mainly, he say, it helps you to see better, to see, for example, that a tree is not green, but a hundred or a thousand shades of green and other colors. In Churchill's case, he started painting in oils in his 40s and then became more serious about it after his retirement, or semi-retirement, from public life.Did Churchill convince me to try it. I'm not sure. I'm thinking about it, though.

This is such a fascinating book. I picked up a copy at a lending library and was amazed to learn that Churchill had taken up painting as a hobby and that it became one of the main passions of his life. Painting changed the way he looked at things - nature and art. It gave him absolute joy as he increased his ability to capture light and images. I wanted to share the book with one of my friends so I ordered this copy and was very pleased that it was a good price, in good condition including having the 18 colour plates and it arrived within days. I highly recommend this marvelous true story.
