As a book editor prior to entering the nursing student world, I can confidently say this book is laborious, contradictory, and dull. And I used to edit Old Testament exegetical tomes ... that had no illustrations. This is worse.I would greatly appreciate it if medical schools did more research on which textbooks clearly teach the topics necessary to master, so that—as their students struggle with purposefully bewildering multiple-choice exams—they could fully grasp the life-or-death concepts necessary to help and heal patients.ATTN Nursing School Faculty: Read at least 3 randomly selected chapters (preferably on a topic you are somewhat unfamiliar with ... like a newbie student would) in each book you assess for purchase. Do you feel as though the terminology is clearly defined? Could you teach someone else the concept you just learned about ... or are there gaps in your newly grasped idea, made evident as you attempt to explain it to another adult?Then that book is leaving gaps for your students, which is leaving gaps in their performance for patients.

If your course reading assignments are given by page number, rather than entire chapters or units, steer clear of the kindle edition. There's no page numbers, just location numbers, which won't correspond to what's assigned. Also, there's no access code if you're looking to use The Point.

This book was required for my class except they did mention ed. 13 instead, however, I decided to get the 14th edition b/c the price was the same for a new 13th edition and 14th edition so why not get the updated info for the same price? As stated, I got a new book and it was received in the plastic wrap and let me tell you these books, emphasis on bookS (it's a bundle, volume 1 & 2), are heavy. I was not expecting the package to be that heavy. Books were clean, never used, no dents, or scratches. I haven't read them yet, but I feel prepared to start reading ahead for this coming semester!! Before I purchased I asked if this came with online access I was told it did which was important bc the course i needed it for does online assignments on the publishers site "Thepoint". turns out the online access is only for additional study materials and not access to The point which would leave me needing to purchase separate online access which costs as much as the book does. for only a few $$$ more than this book set you can buy an online version which has the entire book AND comes with the online access needed. If you dont need access to The Point then the book is fine,

I was under the impression that the book would be divided into 2 separate volumes but was surprised to see that it is all together. I’m extremely disappointed and I hope the book doesn’t just fall apart considering how massive it is. I paid for a new book but it wasn't wrapped or anything. I recommend you buy this off the website and not on amazon.

Very disappointed. I work in surgical field- thoracic surgery, and for that part I can say that the book is 5-10 years out-of-date. In fact, I have one of the previous editions and there is almost no change.

This is probably my worst purchase all year. The platform does not have valid page numbers, there is not an easy way to get to the chapters, it is impossible to copy any of the information such as definitions to study, and everyone else who purchased this book received a code to use online to access study information. Lastly, the book is quite "wordy" where you will read the same information over, and over to where it is quite boring. There are not many pictures or priority information boxes. Please consider buying the Medical-Surgical Nursing 9th Edition Ingatavicius, Workman, and Rebar book.

Can as one book. Thought it was 2 volumes but still a good deal for the large book. Our instructor actually uses the book. They delivered good timing. Has chapter and page detail of content. Great subtopic headlines. Easy to follow.

This book was originally given to me in preparation for an online webinar I was to give back in May. Its premise is simple, and the techniques and advice in the book have already improved all of my presentations since. I've recommended the book to at least 5 people, and each one of them have passed the book on to others. I recently loaned my copy out to a friend giving a keynote next month. I missed it so much, I bought another copy on amazon.If you talk to people for a living, get this book. You won't regret it.

The book is short, present the ideas concisely and has the right amount of statistics and examples to illustrate the importance and value of the proposed approach. The guidelines and directions you find on this book will help you, as long you work enough, the prepare and deliver effective presentations. Recommendations are down-to-earth and credible. I definitely recommend this book.

Required reading for all communicators -- PR people, Social Media people, Content Marketing people, Presenters, Marketing people -- if you haven't read this great how to - you are missing out. Thank you Yewman and Craig for making it all so simple to understand (which I guess should not be a surprise)

It’s organized well. It follows the talk track of what the authors want to convey as their message. And it has good stories!

As long as this book exists - there is simply NO reason to present a boring power point presentation ever again. Andy & Dave are on a quest to save the world from death by power point. How? Stories! Their effectiveness comes from "shake up your thinking" humor, rockin' examples, and the simple reminder that we already have the capacity to tell compelling stories - on weekends away from work! The BIG takeaway for me? Get to the point quick and upfront. The rest of a speech is evidence. Get this book and rock your stage!

Starred Review. Grade 6-10–Walker brings a little-known story of the Civil War to life in this fascinating book. When the Union blockade of all ports in the South stopped supplies from reaching the Confederate Army, Horace L. Hunley decided to create a submarine that would be able to sneak up on enemy ships and blow them up. After many years of trial and error, the H. L. Hunley actually succeeded in sinking the USS Housatonic in February of 1864. But the submarine never returned to port, and her crew perished in the Charleston Harbor. This is a finely crafted account of the Hunley from its inception to the modern archaeological quest to exhume her from the water. It is divided into chronological chapters complete with pictures, maps, and primary sources. Half of the book discusses the construction and design of the submarine, in addition to its practice runs and its first and only mission. The second half consists of the process of locating and excavating the Hunley, as well as piecing together the puzzle of exactly what happened on that fateful night in 1864. After sinking a Union sloop near Charleston, South Carolina, in 1864, the hunley did not return to port. Although divers searched for more than 130 years, the sub was not found until 1995. Over the last 10 years, archaeologists have carefully raised the hunley and painstakingly sifted through the 20,000 pounds of sediment it contained for artifacts and human remains and, ultimately, clues to why, when, and how the vessel sank. Walker begins with the history of the Hunley's design and construction as well as its place in Civil War and naval history. She really hits her stride, though, in explaining the complex techniques and loving care used in raising the craft, recovering its contents, and even reconstructing models of the crewmembers' bodies. Back matter includes a detailed author's note, source notes, a bibliography, and recommended Web sites. Thoroughly researched, nicely designed, and well illustrated with clear, color photos, the book will serve as an informative guide to anyone interested in the hunley or intrigued by archaeology. Secrets Of A Civil War Submarine, by Sally Walker, provides a nice, quick overview of the Hunley's history, recovery, excavation, and conservation. Targeting the late grade-school reader, the book is written in the style of and at a similar level to a National Geographic article. Any reader will enjoy it and come away with a good understanding of the Hunley project. There are a few detail mistakes, such as in an explanation of neutral buoyancy, but the main point is always delivered successfully by the text. I've been studying material on the Hunley since 2000, but I found several important bits of information I haven't seen elsewhere. The explanation of archaeological techniques as applied in the Hunley excavation is the best I've read. The book is nicely illustrated, although most of the photos have been previously published, and the interpretive drawings contain some fairly large inaccuracies. Overall, I'm happy to have this in my collection of books about the Hunley and I'm glad to recommend it.

Not being a history buff I must admit (to my shame) I had never heard of the Hunley before my husband and I paid a visit to the museum where it is now located. I didn't want to pay the prices for the books at the gift shop so when I got home I looked for an inexpensive book that would give me some of the history and had most of the pictures of what I had seen. This is exactly what I was looking for. I found the reading interesting without being overwhelming. The pictures were also exactly what I was looking for to remind me of what turned out to be an extremely interesting chapter in American history.

Despite most people's fascination with land battles there was a war at sea. This book does a great job of opening a window that most people never thought of looking through.

After seeing the Hunley at Charleston SC, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. How those sailors crammed themselves in this unproven submersiblemachine of the Civil War is almost unbelievable. It killed more Confederates than it did the Union enemies!

A fantastic pictorial review of the rediscovery of the Hunley's resting place outside Charleston, it's fascinating recovery and subsequent archeological investigation. It also introduces the reader to the men who manned her on her fateful first and last mission against a Federal vessel blockading Confederate supplies entering the harbor. A great introduction to this interesting if little known aspect of the war between the states.

Love this submarine book! Beautiful pictures and great information. Found this book to be very helpful in writing a paper on submarines in the Civil War.

The story of the Hunley is a well told account of eight men with extradardonary courage who gave their lives for their cause.

Primo Levi, similar to Elie Wiesel, is so closely associated in my mind with The Holocaust, and Holocaust literature, that I was surprised to find that in THE PERIODIC TABLE, Levi rarely touches on it directly. And yet, as a memoir of his life as a chemist both before and after Auschwitz, the entire book is freighted with the knowledge of his time in the camps; similar, perhaps, to a biography of a man born with a serious birth defect, and how this background knowledge forces the reader to reevaluate the simple tasks of living that he'd previously taken for granted. Simultaneously, as a part of Levi's entire oeuvre, I also had the feeling that THE PERIODIC TABLE was a statement, an affirmation by Levi, who HAD become associated so closely with The Holocaust, saying, in effect, `I am not Auschwitz. I am a chemist.'Regardless, as others have noted, THE PERIODIC TABLE is a collection of stories--some true and some fiction, and each tied to one of the elements of the Periodic Table by some detail in the story. For instance, the first chapter, titled `Argon', contains a brief explanation of the group of gases that Argon belongs to--The Noble Gases:"There are the so-called inert gases...They bear curious Greek names of erudite derivation which mean `the New,' `the Hidden,' `the Inactive,' and `the Alien.' They are indeed so inert, so satisfied with their condition, that they do not interfere in any chemical reaction, do not combine with any other element, and for precisely this reason have gone undetected for centuries."Levi then goes on to interweave anecdotes about the Jewish community he knew growing up as a child in Italy, and one quickly picks up on the association between the Noble gases and this community. Most of the rest of the stories are not quite so allegorically tied to the elemental heading, though there always remains a hint of it. The early chapters I thought were dense and philosophical, which surprised me for some reason, though I either grew accustomed to Levi's style, or the stories became more straightforward as the book went on. I also found that after the initial pages, I thought the book captivating--which, again, given the episodic nature of the stories, was surprising. The long and the short of it is that, although I expected to enjoy the book, I enjoyed it for none of the reasons I suspected I would.It is not an easy book to categorize. Part fiction, part memoir; little direct mention of The Holocaust, and yet the book is entirely infused with it--I hesitate to call it unique, but I do think it stands apart. A very intriguing book.

What can a little Midwest housewife write about Primo Levi? These autobiographical chapters, each bearing the name of a chemical element as a title, and interspersed with short stories, a written with a deft yet delicate touch, referring to but not dwelling on the horror Levi's experience as an inmate of Auschwitz. Touching in a completely unsentimental way, beautiful, really.

Periodic table' is a chemist's blueprint of the fascinating elements that make up our world. It was insightful to read this biographical account by Primo Levi, a Jewish chemist in Auschwitz, both during and thankfully after Nazi atrocity. True to its name, the focus is on his adventures with chemistry - chemistry as a man's passion, as well as a means to sustain in a big bad world. Reading about chapters on different elements definitely piqued this organic chemist's interest. It was a down memory lane on archaic inorganic analysis from B.Sc. days. Admittedly decades back during the author's time, exposure awareness and safety concerns were near non-existant and some of Levi's trysts were jaw-dropping to me as a modern practitioner (much akin to walking a tightrope without safety net!). Life of a chemist in a very difficult historical period, synthesized out of various "element"al chapters - awesome!

No, this book will not teach you what you missed in Chem 101. It is instead a stirring memoir of an Italian Jew ,a chemist, who survived the years of Italian Fascism and the subsequent Nazi occupation, by the the force of his creativity and sensitivity to the harrowing events that befell him. The memoir feels like a set of short stories. Each chapter is named for a chemical element.The use of this device was incredibly creative. In one case, Chapter 2 Hydrogen, the author recounts his teenage adventure with a friend, that generated hydrogen from water. In another chapter, Iron, the author describes his best friend and their mountain adventures. The friend seemed to have the qualities of Iron. Just as the elements have personalities- that is, they share, steal or give up electrons to form bonds with other elements, people also have personalities- resilient, affiliative, inert- and Dr. Levi draws parallels between these chemical and human personalities.And what stories he has to tell. A romance that might have been. Surviving a death camp by making flints for cigarette lighters. Uncovering a Nazi in a postwar business relationship. 3 amazing chapters which are wholly works of fantasy- not biography at all. The last chapter is a chemical story, the story of one element without a human subtext, the most important element to life on earth.The book is a tour de force, and a tribute to the fascination of scientific inquiry and experiment.

Primo Levi was a clever young man and he wanted you to know that. His use of members of the Periodic Table as a device to illuminate his characters is sometimes an overreach, sometimes silly and sometimes well honed. That he had intense experiences and met many people worthy of a good story, is not in dispute. As a writer and as a character in his own stories, he made me wish I'd known him as a friend.
