Knitted Finger Puppets: 34 Easy-to-Make Toys, by Meg Leach

Review

With Christmas just a matter of days away, everyone's scrambling to find those last-minute gifts--and crafters are scrambling to finish the last of their handcrafted projects. But for knitters with a few minutes--and some scrap yarn--to spare, there's still plenty of time to knit up a cute handmade gift or two, thanks to Meg Leach's book, Knitted Finger Puppets: 34 Easy-to-Make Toys. The patterns in the book are divided into three collections. There's "Christmas at the North Pole," featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus and some other holiday favorites like an elf, a snowman, a reindeer, and even some gifts for Santa's bag. There's "Under the Big Top," with patterns for a ringleader, clowns, and all kinds of circus animals. And there's "The Enchanted Forest," with everybody's fairy tale favorites--from Hansel and Gretel to the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. In the book's final section, Leach gives instructions for a few extras. She teaches you how to design and personalize your own puppets, too--so you'll be able to make a brown-haired fisherman puppet for your favorite brown-haired fisherman or a blonde ballerina puppet for your favorite blonde ballerina. And the adorable little projects in this book won't break the bank, either. For many of the projects, all you need is a set of size 1 double-pointed needles and a few yards of worsted weight yarn. And if you're anything like me, you've already got a whole bunch of seemingly worthless little balls of worsted weight yarn lying around your crafting area, just waiting for that perfect project. For the most part, the patterns are pretty basic, too. You'll need to knit in the round and occasionally increase or decrease--and, for arms and legs, you'll either need to make a crochet chain or knit an I-cord. Then you need to sew some things together, do some super-simple embroidery (for things like eyes and hair), and maybe tie on a bow or stitch on some felt--and then your project is finished and ready for wrapping. Though it might take some practice to get used to working with worsted weight yarn on such tiny needles, the projects in Knitted Finger Puppets are refreshingly simple and easy to improvise. And, when you're done, they'll make perfect gifts for kids of all ages. Small children will love to play with them (and moms will love that they're small enough to fit in their purse), but they make great whimsical gifts for grown-ups, too. So if you've got some holiday travel time ahead of you, be sure to pick up a copy of Meg Leach's Knitted Finger Puppets before you go. Then pack some DPNs and a bag of scraps from your stash, and you'll have a great gift or two finished by the time you reach your destination. --From Kristin Dreyer Kramer, nightsandweekends blog

My husband bought this for his Business Organizations class when he was in law school and said it made the difference between him passing with flying colors and completely failing the course! If you're struggling through a legal business class (or have a class coming up with a reputation for being tough, I highly recommend you get this book. It takes complex ideas and breaks them down into easy-to-understand concepts, without actually dumbing down the information (i.e., it helps you understand what you need to know without giving you the kindergarten version).

This book was really, really helpful, The only thing is that our professor went into traditional/modern versions of fiduciary duties for corporations, and this book was kind of more post stone v. ritter. Still extremely helpful though. I found it to be better than Barbri and maybe not quite a good as Crunchtime (my favorite supplement, but the corporations one didn't include agency).

Helpful when preparing for my Business Associations exam - not very in depth, but provided key things to include in my outline

All acing series are top-notch. This was not an exception. Happy with the purchase.

Honestly learned nothing in class, but this book is a lifesaver and indeed true to its name. I love how the Acing series breaks down concepts into simplified language and summarizes with a checklist. I only wish there was an Acing book for every class I take.

After taking a semester in Business Organizations this book summarized and brought all the concepts together and really helped me on the final.

Clear and concise. Would definitely recommend.

This book saved me.

I Am Not a Number

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—A spotlight on the injustice of Canada's residential school program based on Dupuis's grandmother's childhood experience. The story begins in medias res: the front door is open, and a gruff white man is demanding that Irene Couchie's parents hand over their children—now "wards of the government." Couchie and her two brothers are taken from their home on Nipissing First Nation to attend a residential boarding school many miles away. Couchie learns that names are not allowed at this school; she becomes number 759. Subdued illustrations assist in setting the overall serious tone. The facial expressions of Couchie throughout the year bring the raw hopelessness of the situation to light. Many scenes are alarming; for example, Sister Mary is shown cutting a crying Couchie's hair off. After the kids return home for the summer, Couchie's parents vow to hide their children from the government and the "Indian Agent" sent to recollect them. Back matter contains material on Canada's residential school system, which "educated" indigenous peoples, and the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission condemning the practice in 2015. Dupuis also provides more information about her grandmother. VERDICT Pair this recommended selection with Nicola I. Campbell's Shi-shi-etko for students learning about the boarding school system.—Amy Zembroski, Indian Community School, Franklin, WI

Review

Publishers Weekly July 11, 2016 Kacer (The Magician of Auschwitz, also illustrated by Newland) and educator Dupuis unflinchingly recount a story from the childhood of Dupuis’s grandmother, one of some 150,000 Canadian First Nations children relocated to residential schools as part of an assimilation policy. Irene Couchie and two brothers were taken from their family in 1928 to attend a Catholic boarding school. She was assigned a number in lieu of her name, her long hair was unceremoniously cut, and a nun physically abused her for speaking her native language (“even though the red sores had now turned pink, the memory of the punishment had not faded one bit”). The story never shies from the harsh treatment Irene endured, peaking dramatically when the children hide from the agent coming to collect them for a second school year. They were among the lucky ones whose parents took a stand and refused to return them. Most spreads feature a full page of first-person narrative opposite Newland’s somber watercolors. An afterword discusses Canada’s history with the residential school program (and recent government apologies for it) and provides additional details about her grandmother’s life. Ages 7–11. (Publishers Weekly 2016-07-11)Residential and boarding school stories are hard to read, but they're vitally important... books like I Am Not a Number should be taught in schools in Canada, and the U.S., too. (Debbie Reese American Indians in Children's Literature)A moving glimpse into a not-very-long-past injustice. (Kirkus Reviews)It’s important to teach children about true Canadian history, but it’s not easy to talk about it in a way that children will understand. I Am Not a Number is perfect to get the conversation about residential schools started with your children. It opens the door for them to ask questions about the subject and the story is relatable in a way they can follow. (Residential School Magazine)This well done, empathetic historical book is highly recommended for all collections. (Starred Review) (Booklist)To any one looking for a book to teach children about the history of residential schools 'I Am Not A Number' is without hesitation a very powerful and historical teaching tool. (Anishinabek News)The personal relevance of the subject matter to Jenny Kay Dupuis comes through in the strong text she co-wrote with Kathy Kacer.... primary school teachers and librarians will find much here that they can work with. (CM: Canadian Review of Materials)Gillian Newland's sombre illustrations, done with a muted palette of greys, greens and browns, beautifully capture the written words.... This book is a moving look into an injustice that continues to have ramifications for First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. (Canadian Children's Book News)Of special note is the author’s ability to portray the devastating environment that Irene lived in, in a heartfelt and authentic way that is very much appropriate for the intended age... Few stories exist about the residential school system that are aimed at a younger age group, and this one is an absolute must for classrooms and libraries. (Resource Links)[A] powerful teaching tool that brings a terrible part of Canada’s history to light in a way that children can learn from and relate to. It is written in simple language and told in a way that will stimulate conversations about residential schools and the traumatic effects they have had on generations of First Nation families and communities. ... beautifully illustrated by Gillian Newland. She captures the somber mood of the school, the anguish of the children, the severity of the nuns and the desperation of the family. Students can easily empathize with Irene and her brothers as well as their parents as they try to imagine how they would feel or act in a similar situation. (Alberta Native News 2016-12-06)

Very nice child picture book, (although I'm giving it to my daughter who is 30) Nice artwork, story similar to the film "Where the Spirit Lives" (real hard to find movie) I recommend this to anyone interested in Native American history and social issues and want to pass on this awareness on to their children.

This is a great book.

Amazing book. It helps my children understand some of their cultural history.

Based on the true story of the author’s grandmother, this picture book captures the experience of First Nations people in Canada being sent to boarding schools. Under threat of fines and jail time, First Nation parents were forced to give their children up to the government. When Irene is taken to her new home, she tries to never forget her real home, her parents and their way of life. Irene is called only by a number at the school and told to scrub the brown off of her skin. Her hair is cut off. She is punished when she speaks her native language by a nun burning her hands. Irene is eventually allowed to return home for the summer, where she continues to have nightmares of her time at school. Finally, her parents decide to hide the children rather than sending them back. This is not a picture book for preschoolers, rather it is ideal for elementary-aged children closer in age to 8-year-old Irene in the story. The horrific treatment of First Nation children is shown with real clarity. The use of Irene’s own voice to tell the story makes it personal and much more painful. While there is a lot of text on the pages, the book reads well and the text is straightforward and necessary to explain the loss of culture and the darkness of the boarding schools. The illustrations by Newland are almost like painted photographs. They show the family losing their children, the stern nuns, and the punishment scene is carefully captured afterwards in terms of pain and emotion rather than depicting the punishment itself. There is a feeling of constraint and loss in the images of the boarding school and then freedom when the children return home.A powerful look at Canadian history and First Nation children, this book would work well paired with When I Was Eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton. Appropriate for ages 7-10.

The way Native Americans have been treated in the past is something that needs to be taught to children now. It’s not easy to read about. It is, however the facts. I am not a Number offers a valuable lesson in history in a simple and profound way.In I Am Not A Number, Irene’s parents, like many Native parents, were coerced into giving up their children. In Canada, in 1928, Dupuis's grandmother, Irene Couchie Dupuis, was taken to a residential school in Canada. These were schools designed to "civilize" and convert Native children. When Irene arrives at the school and tells the nun (it is a mission school run by the Catholic Church) her name, she's told "We don't use names here. All students are known by numbers. You are 759.”Her hair, along with the other girls, is cut short. They’re also punished for using their own language. When Irene and her friend speak in, Ojibwe, one of the nuns hits her with a wooden spoon, saying it’s ”the devil's language." The nun then punishes Irene by filling up a bedpan with hot coals to burn Irene's hands and arms. This is indeed how the children at the schools were punished.Irene's story ends on a hopeful note. She and her brothers go home for the summer. When the agent shows up in the fall, the children hide in their dad's workshop. Irene's dad challenges the agent and says, "Call the police. Have me arrested,” vowing that his children will never be taken away again. In the Afterword, Dupuis writes that her grandmother was only at the school for that one year because her fathers resistance worked. She was able to stay home, with her family. The lesson is, resistance works against injustice. In the back of the book Dupuis and Kacer provide historical facts and information about the residential school system, specifically the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (the TRC) released in 2015.The history of the US and Canada is complex and often painful. However, I am Not a Number provides a valuable history lesson with straight forward text and enhanced by beautiful illustrations. I highly recommend this read aloud book for children 6 years and older.

Wow. Just another example of a time when people completely dehumanized other people. It's astounding! How could those nuns and teachers do this? I literally cannot fathom it.

This book is about the residential school system in Canada and the horrible treatment the indigenous children experienced there and how one child didn't forget who she was in spite of it all. It is beautifully written and illustrated. I highly recommend reading this book with 8 years old and up as it doesn't' shy away from the horrific true details of life in the residential schools. The story is based on the author's grandmother's actual experience. It has a very detailed author's note with lot of information on residential schools. A must have for classrooms and library. Recommend reading it with a child and discussing residential schools before reading.

#136,004 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I am an intermediate-level knitter at best, but love to explore new-to-me techniques. Since I've done a lot of exploring of lace knitting, I want to move into color- particularly Fair Isle and double-knit.The directions here are very thorough and well-illustrated. (I learn better from books than from videos, personally.) My first attempts seem to be working reasonably well, and I am generally not puzzled when I screw up!I wish there were more VERY SMALL projects in here, with which to start. I do love the card suits coasters in the doubleknit segment, and plan to do a few before I graduate to washcloths!I am very happy with this book- it has just the content I had hoped for when I bought it.

Mastering Color Knitting is a book of techniques, and, even though I consider myself an accomplished knitter, Leapman has included many techniques I have not learned and am ready to try. Here's my take on Mastering Color Knitting:PROS:1. I've known about steeks for some time, but the idea of actually cutting into my knitting made me quake. Leapman's explanation is sufficient and calming enough that I may give it a try.2. What about double knitting? The previous instructions I've tried were insufficient to make this a useful technique for me. Now I've changed my mind, and I've already completed a cap for a cancer patient who complains of a cold head.3. The book is packed with tips on keeping an even tension when doing stranded knitting. In addition, there are many charts that you can use to create your own color knits.CONS:1. While I do not believe this is a negative, knitters looking for complete sweater patterns will not find many in this book. Leapman's focus is on technique and chartings, so if you're looking for garment patterns, this will not be the book you want.2. The book itself does not lie flat when it's open. To work from a chart it will be necessary to copy the chart to a separate page, or to weight the pages to keep the book open.OVERALL:There's plenty here to delight most knitters - stranded knitting, double knits, intarsia and a wealth of charts to get you started. A worthy addition to your knitting library!

This has been so helpful in my color-work knitting. The charts in the front of the book allow you design your own patterns for hats and other simple pieces. The knitting hints are great and the patterns are inspiring. I use this book frequently as a reference.

The book is well written, illustrated beautifully and has tons of patterns to inspire everyone. That is the good news. I have been knitting over 40 years, but still found some information a bit challenging. I believe the author should have made 2 books in order to expand instructions and illustrations. The insturctions are simple, perhaps, too simple; experienced knitters will get it, but not the novice. A spiral rib to enable the book to lie flat when opened would have been good---almost essential..It is an excellent reference book that covers about everything to do with "color knitting", which it was intended to do. I would not recommend it for beginners, however.

In Mastering Color Knitting, Melissa Leapman offers up a fun and creative look at colorwork in knitting and focuses on three techniques for incorporating color: Fair Isle, Intarsia, and Reversible Two-Color Double Knitting. The first part of the book looks at some basic color theory and Leapman offers some ideas on how to use a 12 color wheel to find combinations that satisfy the requirements of the project at hand. For those of us that tend to shy away from making big color statements, I thought the discussion on choosing colors was both encouraging and helpful. The Fair Isle section offers clear instruction on the basics of Fair Isle knitting for techniques for tangle-free multi-strand knitting and steeks. The role of color dominance is also discussed. The colorways that are shown and suggested are very pretty and the pattern charts are plentiful. I found this section lacking, however, in two ways: there isn’t enough information provided about designing a Fair Isle item for a reader to be able to do it successfully without having read something else like Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting in addition to this one. My second issue was in regards to the discussion on shaping Fair Isle knitting. I haven’t read a lot on shaping stranded colorwork, and Leapman provides a side panel chart that was used in one of the sample projects; but there is no photograph of the side seam showing how the side panel works into the sweater, and no discussion on how the side panel was designed to blend in between the fleur de lis pattern shown in the project. I would have liked to have known that. The Intarsia knit section was very good. There are very good instructions and tips for changing colors and “painting with stitches”. I learned a couple of new techniques that I didn’t know about, like three techniques for knitting intarsia in the round. I don’t know who came up with those, but I thought they were very clever and sound easy to work. There are also a number of references provided for computer-generated graph paper and graphics-charting software in addition to the reproducible graph paper grid at the back of the book. The Reversible Two-Color Double Knitting section was lots of fun. I have done double knitting in the past so I was aware of the basic double knitting idea (like green dots with blue background on one side and blue dots on green background on the other) but I was not aware that the patterns could be different on both sides! After having read the explanation it makes sense now, but who’d a thunk it?Leapman’s book makes you think of color in some new and different ways and was an inspiration for a knitter with monochromatic tendencies like me.

This is a bit advanced or intermediate but there are good explanations on how to add color to a project. Stripes that don't jump where you start and end. Some practical advice and some really nice looking projects with charts and instructions both.

I really like this book. Love the many pages of simple graphed patterns. I promptly chose a few and made a hat. I will use this book often for nice graphed fair isle.

Clear instructions. Good detail and helpful advice. This book and time to practice technique has seen a leap in quality and ease of knitting.
