Good devotional written by one of our favorites, Bill Johnson

Using this Devotional now. Very thought provoking & good material to meditate on.

I had hoped this would be a devotional to help me seek and be in God's presence this year. Johnson says in his introduction that he wrote this devotional to stir up our desire to be close to God. (vii)He starts out well. He reminds readers of the cost of seeking God's face – everything. The supernatural reality of God's presence may mean we lose our dignity or respectability. I was encouraged when I read, “Ministry to God is the most important responsibility of all, and it is available to every believer.” (10)Johnson did not stay long on the subject of seeking God's presence or ministering to Him, however. He moved quickly from being in God's presence to doing something as a result of it. By day 65, “God's favor rests upon us when we are being and doing that which He created us in His wisdom to be and do.” (65) Being in God's presence is not an end in itself but a means to use God's power in ministry, in areas of influence and for completing God's assignments. He does return from time to time to choosing the main thing, knowing and loving God. (71) But he seems to quickly return to “what we've been given to do in life...” (73) Even God's grace, favor, “always goes with an assignment.” (90) I was disappointed that Johnson described the face of God as “the ultimate place of favor and responsibility.” (176) What happened to intimate relationship and deep communion?I was disappointed that there was not much instruction on how to actually enter into God's presence and develop the habit of meeting Him face to face. Johnson writes on Day 136, “What will it take for you to truly count the cost, step out of your comfort zone, and boldly enter God's presence?” (136) But the succeeding days return to more about our assignment rather than how to enter into God's presence. (141) Even the baptism in the Spirit is not something to deepen our relationship with God but to be filled with His power to demonstrate the life of Jesus to the world and affect the course of world history. (147,148)If you are looking for a devotional to help you experience God's presence, perhaps by prayer or meditating on His word, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that is more about walking out that relationship, such as the choices we make and the assignments we are given, this is a good one. (78)I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This is one of the best devotionals I have read since Jesus Calling by Sarah Young.Bill challenges the reader in a small paragraph to go deeper with God. You start with a passage of scripture the sets your heart ready to hear Bill’s thoughts. It stirred my heart and drew me closer to Jesus.It ends with a point to reflect on and a place to write your thoughts.I highly recommend this devotional. If you don’t have a lot of time but want to encounter God’s presence and set the tone for your day, pick up this book.A copy of this book was given to me. All opinions are my own.

This was a good read. Lots of good info about the positives of keeping a horse barefoot. No negativity toward shoes, but clearly showing barefoot is generally healthier for the whole horse. Went into nutrition, which was nice, but none/most of the products they recommend are only available in the UK. Wish it outlined the nutritive values of their recommendations and the ingredients so a similar product could be found in the US. There are no instructions on how to barefoot trim, which was disappointing to me. I have Pete Ramey's book, Maureen Tierney's Hoof Guided Method book and have gleaned ideas from many different websites of barefoot trimmers,all useful with different animals as I feel there is no perfect trim or perfect hoof. Was hoping this book would provide some new or different info on barefoot trimming. Pete Ramey's book is by far the best step by step book I've seen if anyone is looking to do their own hoof trims.

I bought this book to help me improve my skills & knowledge in trimming. I was taught by my Vet & my farrier to trim my own horse, but am not professional. I wanted to get more info on the barefoot trim. (especially since there is so much controversy of opinion out there about barefoot trimming vs. shoeing) This book has a lot of great points on barefoot trimming & management. And it does not go overboard on the "evils" of shoeing. Shoeing is mentioned with pros & cons. They focus a lot on the proper management of staying barefoot -even with very athletic horses. They go deeper than just the trim itself- they mention diet, terrain, usage, and more.I think this book is a great addition to anyone's library about keeping your horse barefoot. I wouldn't say it's The One & Only book on barefoot horses, but it's definitely educational.

I bought this for my daughter who has not had shoes on her horse for years. She has found it amazingly helpful and in fact changed her hoof practitioner as a result because her horses hooves were not looking like they should. I have perused the book and to my mind, and in light of my daughters enthusiastic response to it, it appears to be a must have for those who do, or are considering, barefoot riding.

Great book with a lot of information. The book is about maintaining hooves, not how to trim them. I love Rockley Farms blog as well.. truly inspirational in terms of helping horses move towards barefoot and then how to successfully help them stay there.

There are many important books on all the subjects this one book put together in one "story" - the authors own. This is the book I would like to get translated into many big and small languages, to reach most people. The only book so far, that connect English sportsriding with amarican knowledge of natural horsekeeping. I wish you could reach into the Danish riding society.I bought it becourse I had red it first from the public library.

Excellent book! I devoured this one, from cover to cover within a couple of days. My boyfriend is going to read it next.

This is a very comprehensive book on barefoot hoofcare. Well written and easy to understand- read it in less than two days! Like it so much I have kept it to go back and review on occasion.

I did not like how this shifter story was set up. If this had been the very first shifter romance story that I read I would not have fell in love with the genre. I would have hated it.... Male was a man-ho. He had sex a few months before. She had sex 5 years before. The equality is not there. Ridiculous! Then we read about his past sex with Mira who is the one telling the female lead. She even asks if she wants to know what will drive him crazy in bed. NO! I would not want anything to do with the male lead what-so-ever. The author claims true mates but the shifter males and females can be man-whores and sluts until they find the true mates and can still reject them for another. The males can take and use breeders. Humans cannot have their babies. What?! No! I did not like this story. A lot of depravity going on: babies and young children being taken and sold, females being taken and kidnapped, females being used as prizes to perverted creepy males, and on and on. No warm fuzzy feelings of romance with this book nor your normal true mate scenario either. Book 6 and especially book 7 are worse. Book 7 was terrible. I would not have anything to do with any of them.

The prose was juvenile at best, which matched the immature tone of the characters. Every single character was undeveloped and one-dimensional, often sounding like teenagers during introspection and making fickle and idiotic decisions throughout the story. The male protagonist, Rafe, is so clearly written by a female romance author who has no idea how men think or act. The female protagonist, Jazz, is supposed to be a grown woman with two children, but acts like a wishy-washy nitwit who never mentally entered adulthood. There is no showing, only telling, with one character or another regurgitating explanations of shifters and their history ad verbatim to move the plot (if there even was one) along. The sex scenes were excessive and sadly the only adequately written parts of the book.I forced myself to reach the halfway point of the story before deciding I had wasted enough of my time.

Rafe is searching for a missing shifter child when he stumbles upon Jasmine at the local bar. Intrigued by her scent and attracted to her in a way he can't explain, especially since she's human, Rafe decides to pursue her. However, things go sideways when an old enemy decides Jasmine is his next target. Will Rafe choose forever with Jasmine or revenge for his family?This story had a different spin on shifters. Instead of being able to change into one animal, the Royals-Rafe being one of them-carried the souls and ability to shift into three different animals. A unique concept that I hope is further developed in the series. Even with the plot holes, Corrigan kept a decent pace with good suspense and small pockets of humor, but the sex..it seemed like Jasmine and Rafe were getting it on in just about every chapter, and frankly, it got old. I really wish more time had been spent on developing the characters instead of their libidos- I have questions that need answers! The overall plot was intriguing enough for me to continue on and (maybe) garner answers to my questions. TREASURED FIND is a decent start for the first book in a series. Hopefully, the next book continues on successfully.

This story has lots of sex scenes, good vs bad plot & hot sexy shifters. Rafe & Jasmine's (Jazz) story has lots of shifters in it & some of the shifters are in one body. Rafe & his family are known as Royal Shifters because the have more than one shifter in their body; they have 3. Rafe & his brothers are in town because they are looking for a shifter child that's been adopted & that's when he meets Jasmine. Unbeknownst to Rafe when they initially meet he doesn't realize that the 2 shifter scents that he smells on her are from her adopted shifter son's; & Rafe & his brothers are looking for a girl shifter. They do eventually find her & her newly appointed guardian as the person who adopted her was killed in a suspicious fire. Megan (she's the female child shifter) & Josh (her guardian) know Jasmine however Josh didn't know that Megan was a shifter until Jasmine told him & she also told him how she knows. Rafe immediately felt something for Jasmine when they met & acted on it. The bad man/shifter is one that is known as a single shifter but he's a greedy one who feels that he should have everything that a Royal does & Rafe & his brothers have a past with the bad shifter man; as he was the one to kill their father & kidnap their sister, Nina. As this is a HEA story you can guess what happens & this book was so good that I read it in 1 day & will be reading the next book in this series.

This book is amazing. This book has great recipes for the slow cooker. They are delicious and well though out. I really enjoyed this book and must be recommended to all.

There are dozens of interesting recipes in the book that I plan to try, but the one I keep going back to is Rustic Potpie Topped with Chive Biscuits and even my non-vegan friends love this meal and the book has very useful tips for slow cooking and slow-cooking vegan ingredients and i ordered this book because I wanted to feed my family healthy meals, but I wanted to throw everything in a pot in the morning and be done with the daily-dinner-dilemma and i opened the book and intended to highlight all the recipes that were gluten-free or could easily be made so only to find that most of them are gluten-free and soy-free and there are a few that are not gluten-free, but very, very few and there are also several recipes that have gluten-free or soy-free options and i have not tried all the actual recipes, but I will update my review when I do. With so many positive reviews and the ingredients are not "too exotic" and the preparation for most recipes doesn't take hours and this book has been very helpful and has a lot of really good, easy to execute recipes and some of the recipes are little obvious and some turn out terrible (polenta in a slow cooker) but we are tagging the ones we like and find ourselves continuing to try additional recipes and repeating ones we liked, which is a good sign.

I’m grateful that my intro to the slow cooker cooking was using this cookbook. Maybe it’s not the possible best out there on the market – sometimes the prep-time is a bit off, and some of the ingredients are a little too complicated to find. But the recipes speak for themselves – they offer a whole bunch of ideas to try and will help you to save you time, your health and your money when cooked on a daily basis. I’ve never looked back since the decision to switch to the home cooking, and I’m glad I used this opportunity to its fullness.

I loved this book too. Usually companion books to the original story, in this case The Wednesday Wars, are not as good or even horrible. Also a National Book Finalist like the original, this book stood on its own as a great novel. There is less emphasis on literature but Jane Eyre is brought into the story as well as art/drawing, science and geography. It is set in the 1968-1969 in the era of the Vietnam War and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. The main character Doug, moves with his very poor family from NYC to a small town so his drunk abusive father can find work. Starting out as an outcast due to his family's financial situation and his brother and father's criminal reputation, Doug is taken under the wing of a few citizens of Maryville like the town librarian, his science teacher, and the grocer's daughter who see him as his own person, a good person with talents and intelligence that no one has tried to nurture and grow until now. They help him get through the abuse and neglect he has to endure as well the town suspicion of his family for the store robberies occurring around town and his older brother coming home from the war with life-changing physical and mental injuries. This was also written as a children's book but as an adult I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am 40+ and enjoy a broad spectrum of genres in literature. I find however, that when I want a good fiction book to escape with, many adult books seem to lack a certain essence of insight and enrichment that I do find in many stories written for teens.I am amazed at Gary Schmidt's talent to create very different stories to present a variety of life's hardships candidly, without any sugar coating, and yet finds a way to show the reader some sweetness and hope through life's challenges. I loved Wednesday Wars and consider it one of my favorite books in a list of my top ten or so. This has definitely been added to that list! I found it to be cathartic, as someone who grew up with an unstable and abusive parent.I cannot recommend Schmidt's Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy enough either, totally different type of story again, but your life will be better for reading it.Also if you find these stories enriching a couple from other authors I recommend are: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - a must!!! Tangerine and a Plague Year by Edward Bloor, and The fault in Our Stars by John Green, I could name a bunch of others.

If you likes The Wednesday Wars you will love Okay for Now. Anybody can read this and enjoy it. It is a book about a kid named Doug who is trying to adjust to a new life in a new town, without any of his friends. You also learn about Doug’s tough home life, he has troubles with his father and his brother. All while he is missing his oldest brother who is out at war. Thankfully there are new people that Doug meets in the new town that expect the best of him. They empower him, and he empowers them. One of my favorite parts of the book is how he relates his life to the art he draws.

“Okay for Now” captured my attention on the first page and I found it hard to put down. It’s a story of a teenage boy struggling to survive in a very dysfunctional family, in a new area where he knows no one, and in a new school. Despite numerous setbacks, he perseveres and makes positive life changes. The story is filled with quirky characters and invaluable lessons about love, life and survival.

I bought this book to read with a book club even though it wasn't a book I would have picked up on my own. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book is! I loved it and couldn't put it down. I felt like the book presented a difficult time in history and a flawed family with so much hope and honesty. I appreciated that the characters in the book had difficult decisions to make on a daily basis and that the reader got to see the consequences of their poor choices and the good that came when they purposely made good choices. I was worried it would be a bummer to read, but it was so uplifting. I loved it so much I had my husband read it and my 5th grade daughter. They both loved it too. I will definitely be reading other books by this author.

As a former teacher, I found so many similarities between Doug Swieteck and students who -- for various reasons -- fall deep into the cracks of formal education. The trite adage of "it takes a village to raise a child" is raised to its best level when Doug's talents are perceived by an assistant in a sleepy library. Life lessons are taught using John James Audubon's beautiful art as the launch pad for Doug's awakening mind.

I was introduced to the Junior or Young Adult gendre of books only a couple of years ago. When I was a kid we relied on things like "Lassie," "Black Beauty," "The Secret Garden," and the Nancy Drew series. But nothing spoke to the life I was experiencing as a troubled teen. And then I had to read the "Wednesday Wars" for a Sabbath Reading for Pastors program and made the delightful discovery that there is something substantive between "Little House on the Prairie" and Harry Potter. Several months ago I heard an interview with Gary Schmidt on the car radio. He was so interesting and the things he was saying about his newest book were so intriguing that I ordered "Okay for Now" for my Kindle as soon as I got home. This story seems to be about real kids with real problems. When I was young, no one talked about their parents getting divorced or any other kind of family trouble. We kept everything inside and maybe didn't even let our pastor or our favorite teacher know what was eating at us. But books like this one invite a young person to think about what she's going through, maybe talk about it with a friend, maybe even discuss these things in the classroom. How refreshing! And how healthy! My oldest grandchildren are too old for this group of books now, and my youngest are not quite ready, but Grandma will be waiting to grace their Christmas tree with books that were really written for them.The Rev.
