Have been waiting for this book for a long time. I took a look through and was impressed. The exercises here are common enough, but what the author brings to the table is a different view. If your expecting a scientific paper this also isn't your book. The author has something like 130 citations from various scientific studies, but does a great job at making the scientific jargon understandable in a common persons type of speech. He tackles things like TUT-Time Under Tension and other methods that are usually discussed in a lot of books, but in a way that isn't overly complicated. He does this throughout the book taking ideas and concepts you certainly find in other books on the subject of bodyweight training, but without over complicating it and making it simple to both understand and apply. The overall layout of the workouts is like the rest of the book filled with explanation that has its roots in science, but is explained so that the common person can understand and apply it. The author does make some controversial claims involving high rep calisthenics, but does so in a way that his viewpoint is understandable and backs it up as well. Why is this a good thing? Most bodyweight books and courses stress utilizing lower reps and controlling the body for a strength based focus and if they do focus on muscle building its done with many variations going from harder to easier/pyramid style etc. The author makes good use of Ladders as an exercise system as well. Essentially this is one of the few books I've run across that looks at the higher rep area of calisthenics which a lot of books made for civilians don't usually do so for me personally it was refreshing. The author is also careful to point out the weakness's of higher rep training, but how to work around it etc. He is very thorough with presenting plenty of options and giving his rationale for it, but again in a way that isn't overly complicated in short what you have is a pretty darn solid book. If I were a beginner and had to recommend three books I'd say this book would be on that list. Every person has to make their own choices of course, but I personally found the text to be different, refreshing, and filled with many good insights and for relatively cheap as well. Its quite literally a gold mind of information that otherwise you might have to look around for. If I had had this book when I first started training it would have helped me a great deal.
There are a lot of calisthenics books out there and almost all of them fall into one of two categories, books that are too basic and dont get you anywhere and books with exercises so advanced you'll spend months or years trying to learn them. This book is neither. It was nice reading a book about an approach to building muscle and losing fat with realistic workouts and exercises.
The author breaks down several different ways to progress in Calisthenics. From gaining muscle to losing fat and increasing your rep count, all bases are covered for all practitioners no matter your skill level.
